Knicks · Obi Toppin - A 3rd Lottery Bust in a Row (page 7)

Next year will be a big one for Obi - if he develops into a player Thibs can trust, he can be paired anyone in pick and roll sets, including Randle. The Knicks need to figure out if Obi can guard 3-5’s.Thibs doesn’t seem to have the stomach the risk more than a few mins of OBi when he already knows has strong defenders in Noah/Taj/Bullock at those spots.

With a shot blockers at center....why can't Randle and Obi play 3/4.....And depending on the matchups, they can switch on defense.

Obi and Randle aren't the quickest players moving laterally. They're an awkward match.

Agreed obi is playing DEFENSE... if he can come in and score 9-12pts a game that’s awesome for backing up our star in randle

The problem with Obi is he has no positional versatility. So if there is a deal out there that makes sense we should trade him. Better off with a combo forward who can give mimutes at the 3 and 4. He is blocked on this roster. Don't give him away but if we can package him to get back a starting SF or PG we should do it
And wouldn't it nice to not have to play Randle 40 minutes because the drop-off is too steep when we go to the bench.

Yes but do you have to throw away a season to get a back-up 4.

You're assuming all 3s are the same. You're telling me Randle or Obi couldn't guard Gordon Hayward or Mo Harkless or Harrison Barnes for short periods of time? It's all about match ups.

“But he only scored 4 points” the kid plays two 4 minute rotations, is in an offense that doesn’t highlight his athletic ability, is not an option period in this offense, without DRose Obi would never touch the basketball, works really hard doesn’t think he is entitled to anything.....despite all of that, he has a great attitude and puts the team first. He even gets the broom and dislodges the ball that is stuck on the backboard last night.

He is going to be a solid NBA player at some point, just not in NY.

GustavBahler @ 4/29/2021 9:18 AM
Obi is looking more decisive with each game. Earlier in the season he played like he didnt want to step on any toes. Isnt an offensive dynamo at this point, but he isnt forcing the issue either. Taking what the defense gives him. He might be an older rook than we usually see. But he's playing like a more experienced one. Learning fast, given the limited prep time for the season. Not having plays run for him.

Think I heard on espn over the last 10 games if he was averaging more Minutes he would be 15ppg

Clearly he is figuring things out and getting comfortable.

Wait until next year and 3 years from now.

Why is everyone so quick to replace a 23 year old who is only making about 5m whom we have contract control over for the next 3 yeArs? Plus he is getting better.

Fans don’t want a competent backup pf who can give us 10+ points a game next year?

Imagine having Randle at 29 and Toppin at 26 on the same team 3 years from now.

Knicks could have a loaded roster 2-3 years from now the waver are building things!

Obi is gonna be a beast. Let Thibs and crew have their way. He and IQ are gonna be game winning Thib-grinding-minions

The RJ scout has spoken. Here endeth the lesson.

I know he's only getting something like 10mpg, but would like to see him swatting more shots though; especially on the perimeter.

He isn't the best fit for the roster. Not with Randle here

EwingsGlass @ 4/29/2021 8:58 PM
I really think the coaching staff is just working with these guys to get them at a level that they want. I don’t think it speaks against their potential that they aren’t yet getting big minutes. Rotation is 10 deep but the team is 15. Yeah, being behind Randle means there aren’t a ton of extra minutes to be had, but it doesn’t mean that he isn’t good. It just means the team is built around Randle. I love Obi’s athleticism. I think the work they put in is real and will pay off.

I think the coaches just have these guys improving and in time the hard work will pay off. When Obi is a defensive force, he will get minutes somehow. There is a difference between talented and ready.

Philc1 @ 5/3/2021 2:22 AM
Obi can play D too? But the people who know everything said he’s Eddy Curry on defense?

so you have stepped back from "include a first rounder if we have to move Julius"

Obi is super talented. On a shit team he would be scoring 15-20 a game. On this squad he's learning to be a complete player and backing up an all star in his rookie season. Obi is progressing. Not being exposed. Nice to also see one of the most demanding coaching staffs loves his work ethic and coachability and attitude

This. If Obi was on a bad team he’d be averaging a double-double and in ROY conversation

But but but.... Pout...what has he done for us recently...pout some more. Let's trade away every rookie...Who wants cap friendly contacts? Who wants to see if players are able to improve every year in the NBA? Check out how injury prone a player is?
Nah, ain't got no time for that!!!
If he doesn't improve his game by year 3 then we can get back to this conversation.

But looking back, I think it is very unlikely we would have picked Quickley later if we had chosen Hali or another PG at 8. So a question for me would be would you prefer Obi and IQ or Halliburton and...?

This is a very good point. Especially given that IQ is not all that far behind Hali. Almost the same point average at 2/3 of Hali's playing time. Hali a better 3pt shooter right now and assists-man, but then Sancto probably trusts him more with the ball and runs plays for him.

And we can't know what Halliburton's development would be here. He might be getting Obi's minutes -- or less.

We don’t draft Quickley if we take Halliburton at 8. Both are combo guards and Quickley > Halliburton

How? Seems like Hali is more than holding his own and doing it better than IQ

Quickley is averaging almost as much ppg (12.3 for Quick versus 13.1 for Halliburton) despite coming off the bench while Halliburton starts and plays 35-40 minutes per game

Do you want to try again or is just throwing stuff against a wall and hoping it turns out right is good enough?

35-40 minutes per game... I mean at this rate I'm just banging Rebecca every night and we'll just call that a thing

congrats bro
