Papabear Says
I know that some of you stats guys on this site have all types of data on this so please help me compare.
I think if he keep his head of straight this sky is the limit for RJ. What do you think.
He has improved Drastically from his first year. That shows he still has a chance to be mentioned in the same sentence. I am not a stats guru but the eye test says that sky is the limit. He needs to become a psychopath to be truly compared
Kobe came off the bench his first two seasons - no comparison
RJ will never have anywhere close to Kobe's athletic ability - no comparison
RJ Barrett's athletic skills and B.ball IQ are way to low to be matchup to Kobe's rookie season.
RJ has played over a 100 games receiving 30+ minute per game .. And RJ only showed up as a 2-way winning player in the 2nd half of a game twice out of the 122 NBA games he played.
RJ Barrett was a no-show in the 2nd half of a game throughout his rookie season, and the start of this season however, he's a 19 yr old 3rd pick in the draft.
Last season, us Knicks fans were so disgusted and upset over Payton poor performance, and Hero-Randle's consistent turnovers late in a game, we didn't pay attention, or overlook the flaws of our 19 yr old rookie.

What are you smoking? Who calls him a hero and who is ignoring his flaws?
And his defense has been pretty excellent this year.

Yep RJ is nowhere near as athletic as Kobe. I think RJ could be as good as Jimmy Butler though
I say instead of trying to find a comp for RJ, lets just let RJ be RJ.

I categorically disagree with nearly everything written here — including punctuation. You can know RJ’s comparative athletic skills, but his BB IQ has always been a relatively high. I would agree he is more of a skill player than an athletic player.
111 games. Not sure how you assert only a two way player twice. He’s ranked pretty highly as a defensive SG - 11th among SGs in defensive Plus/Minus. He actually struggles on offense, but is showed his offensive prowess on numerous occasions.
I think the issue you have with RJ is that he isn’t an All Star yet. I like using TMac as my comparison. TMac took 3 years to develop and then when he left Toronto for Orlando, he took 10 more shots a game and became an all star for 7 consecutive years. Barrett’s current stats are light years ahead of TMac’s and honestly, Barrett has been forced to do more - maybe before he was ready. TMac had Wince to draw the attention.
I can’t promise RJ will be a 7 time all star, but he hasn’t lacked for effort. He’s still quite young and can’t buy a beer in America... must be tough on a Canadian.
It doesn’t make sense to compare Kobe’s first two seasons with RJ’s primarily for the reason that the NBA is significantly different today than it was in the 90s. Today it's normal for kids to come to the league at the age of 19, and then it was an exception and Kobe also came to a pretty good team (Shaq, Jones, Van Excel, Horry...) which played western semifinals and finals in those two seasons.
I love RJ and I think he will be a special player for us, but why put him in such “unfair” comparisons where on the other side is one of the greatest players in league history? As someone wrote, RJ is RJ and I believe he will be great. If we're looking for comparisons, I'd go with Pierce or maybe Butler...which is more than great.
Athletically he cannot compare to Kobe.....but personally I think they a similar mentality...that will help and has helped RJ....he will be a better player for it...and given he had essentially $hit as a coaching staff for his rookie year he is playing catch up

this dude has a wild anti-RJ bias and trashes him every time he can.
RJ is more like a Caron Butler. A guy who can score with decent athleticism but who is not an Uber athlete. As others have said, RJ does not have Kobe’s athleticism, but I think he does have the same mental toughness and determination to be great.

LOL.
They said Brian Scalabrine, the White Mamba, had the same brain type as Michael Jordan. God-given physical/athletic talent is also a factor.
