Knicks · Gotta sign Mike Conley (page 1)

fishmike @ 4/21/2021 4:56 PM
I like Derozan but the best bang for our buck will be Mike Conley. He will come. He'll get paid and potentially be a huge cog and hero in our turn around. I am 100% for a youth movement and its exactly why Conley is the guy you give max money to.

This is the direction I would take with the team right now. We can sign a max guy and still have money to give Noel a deal. Have money to sign our draft picks, draft 3 guys and start competing for a title.

I am assuming we lose Burks/Bullock because of cap restraints. *MAYBE* we can get Reggie back for a reasonable deal. I think someone might throw the MLE at him and if so good luck bud, you earned it and we loved having you here.

As it stands if we split all our cap space between Conley/Noel here's how I would expect us to look next year:

Starters:
Conley
RJ
Randle
Mitch

Key rotation:
IQ
Rose (returns on whatever works... remember his Adidas contract pays him crazy money)
Noel

8-10 in the rotation:
Obi
Knox
Taj (back on veteran exception which is good at his age)

Rest of roster:
Draft picks 15,21,33 (projected as of 4/21)
etc

Its simple. We slightly overpay one older guy but its the perfect balance. The only age on the whole roster are your floor generals Conley/Rose and assuming Taj comes back in his current role of 3rd center (what a job he's done!).

If you look at the +/- and impact Rose has had the clear need for a veteran floor general is clear. Everyone sees it. We dont just need to upgrade Payton. We need another star next to RJ/Randle and Conley can be that guy. Meanwhile (and perhaps most important) is we add a fresh crop of alluring young players when some big piece shakes free and we land that.

That team will be good. We will have a lot of young guys. Veteran floor generals, elite rim protection, and a pair of two-way bruisers in RJ/Randle who pound you like Giants running backs Jacobs/Bradshaw back in the day. You keep your picks and current young guys vs. using them in trades for Wiggins or Lonzo Ball.

The B side to this do basically do the exact same thing with Schroder. He's not really a max guy but he's def an impact guy, played good D, lives in the paint and is the kind of attacking guard that Thibs relishes. A Schroder/RJ/Randle/Mitch is a pretty good start also.

Conley

Side b:
Schroder

DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT. Focus remains on drafting and developing. All these guys have upside and are coachable. Lets build some continuity and start will solidifying the floor general.

fishmike @ 4/21/2021 5:12 PM
check that... currently we would be picking 19/20/33

Is what it is. Gonna have to dig and develop

Welpee @ 4/21/2021 5:33 PM
I have always advocated for getting Conley. I think we missed our opportunity in his first season in Utah when he struggled. Should've made a move for him then. Now, I think it all depends on how much money he wants. I doubt he'll come cheap after an all-star season.
SupremeCommander @ 4/21/2021 6:37 PM
I’ll be honest, I don’t love the idea of Conley... but I do love the idea of 48 minutes split between Conley and Rose
newyorknewyork @ 4/21/2021 7:07 PM
Conley would be good, but dont see the reason he leaves Utah or why Utah lets him walk.
nyvector16 @ 4/21/2021 7:07 PM
I would rather this than any other options at Point Guard this offseason outside of the draft.

I still hold a small glimmer of hope we can pry Kawhi Leonard from the Clippers once they have another disappointing run in the playoffs this year.

I'll be cheering for the Knicks.... and any team that plays the Clips

You had me at Lonzo.

IQ at starting SG? Or a rookie?

Kawhi isn’t against winning a chip and leaving... just have to look appealing...

TPercy @ 4/21/2021 11:06 PM
Love Conley. Right now its between him, Lowry, and Lonzo with the former guys being the safer bets.
Swishfm3 @ 4/21/2021 11:19 PM
Not opposed to Conley. Always been a fan...but you are willing to give him MAX MONEY?! at 33 y/o?!...wow. Not down for that.

Conley will be a great addition but may cost us Rose. I don't see how they would be able to keep both, regardless of contract.

I do agree that Knicks #1 priority is a PG this off-season but I would still want to see them bring back one of Burks/Bullocks (both would be amazing..and a miracle) and Noel. I think Knicks will be able to retain Taj on a reasonable contract but it would be foolish of us to expect the same production he has been giving us next year at his age.

I’ll say them plus Schroder being a dark horse. His scoring and pesky defense make him a nice 2way option at PG.

He's nice, but his lack of efficiency and shooting gives me pause.

I like Conley, not sure how much he has left in the tank.

I would rather him than Ball, who I’m not a fan of.

Now he earns even more (34.5), but it was a long time ago when he signed that contract. At the time, he was considered one of the best PGs in the league, and even then some thought the contract was way too big after all.

Meanwhile, he has gone from (almost) star through a player who is "finished" to the solid starter he is today. But there’s no way anyone will give him anything near 30 per season.

Yep missed the window. Utah is not going to let him go.
