Knicks · there's a real chance for a title here (page 1)
FO is run by a tight group with unique relationships and incredible insight into every single NBA franchise. This appears to be a group looking to use every resource available to procure and develop talent through all pipes: draft/FA/develop/Gleague/EU
FO hires coach Thibs and builds out a deep coaching staff equipped both to teach youth and coach vets (Payne/Woodson for example)
Thibs starts early with those workouts last year and established tight bonds with our two most talented and important players in Randle and RJ.
Knicks start season playing Thibs-ball and it works. Guys develop chemistry early as Thibs leans heavily on RJ/Randle right away. Not only do the wins come but RJ/Randle take massive strides as players.
What do we have?
Knicks have established a culture based on winning and accountability.
Knicks have a pair of build around players at 20/26 in RJ/Randle who play both ends, share the ball, handle and score from anywhere
Knicks have huge caps space and every player in the league is going to notice what playing for Thibs did for Randle's career
Knicks have some additional draft picks (although the Dallas picks appear to be pedestrian and our own lottery days over)
Knicks will not lose talent because ownership doesnt want to pay (sustainability)
Knicks might have a Tom Coughlin situation with an old coach willing to learn new tricks and teach and connect
What needs to happen:
We need to sign another big gun. Old guys I like are Derozan and Conley. Younger guys are Schroder or Norm Powel both of whom I could see taking big next steps under Thibs.
We need to hit on another pick/prospect. Obi/IQ are candidates. Even add Luca to that now (total wildcard, might be nada). We have two FRPs this year.
What else????
-Acquire a legit PG that can create for others, space floor, and can be a late shot clock option
-Acquire a top 15-20 #1 option at the guard spot(though I think you mentioned this)
-IQ reaches Lou Williams level
-Obi becomes a reliable threat coming off bench for Julius
-Thibs continuing to improve his offensive sets

I think fans are sleeping on mitch impact. And I wouldn't put a cap on this team. They will go as far as Thibs, Randle, and RJ can go. We have a solid team of role players around Randle, with a budding All star in RJ....Quickley adapting fast to the nba game. The success of a good team, is measure by player synergy. Role players that not only know their role....but embrace it. That's the advantages of having an old school coach. Thibs is consistent and he creates different roles for different players. It's like a chemical experiment 🤔 that's clicking at the right time. Momentum and Timing is key to everything. Anything is possible...When you have nothing to lose, the sky's the limit. Remember, we not suppose to make the playoffs.

There certainly appears to be a diagram.
I could see the Knicks making some smart blue collar moves instead of going for a big guy. Chances are, the move they make is something we didn’t see coming. These guys are showing some seriously solid decision-making. Consistently adding asset value and franchise value with micro moves.
Simplest value add between this season and next is the draft and the current free agents on this roster. Retaining a strong core with growing bird rights unlocks flexibility later.
Two picks in the 20s still have value. Could easily see us adding Ayo Dosunmo and letting Thibs work with him. In a game that focuses on Tandle as the primary and Barrett as the secondary, a guy with Dosunmu’s skill set could fit in well. I’d think a guy like Greg Brown would be a draft replacement for my lust for Jerami Grant. Hard workers both of them that seem like they will bring their lunch pails to the team. If Isaiah Jackson is around with the third pick, he would be enough project behind Robinson and Noel (and Pelle) to have time to grow. Otherwise, the Knicks could always pick a EuroStash player.
Best thing I see is that this staff did the best with what they had and turned the team around in a season. They have the ability to grow incrementally and likely have enough credibility now to add the pieces they want around a strong hardworking core.
With that “hardworking” core, everything seems possible.

The critical thing is to not only add that next big gun but to do it in a way that doesnt cost future assets.
I think the best bet is procure a sub-max player. If Kawhi says "looks fun" ok he gets the max but assuming he's off the board. I like Conley/Derozan as impact vets and Schroder/Powell as another gun to put next to RJ/Randle as far as creating a group who can impose their will on the game on both ends.
The key is by getting a guy in $25mm range vs. max we are looking at a situation where we can bring back more guys Noel/Bullock/etc
I honestly have very high expectations. Leon has a feel for the league we havent seen in prior FOs for sure.
We might get TWO of those guys. We might get guys willing to sign for less because they think in 2-3 years under Thibs they will be max guys like Randle became. I think thats likely a stretch but Schroder/Powell are 27/28 next year. If we signed both on Randle type contracts both would be eligible for Gordan Haywood type paydays at that same age.
Another option is just give everything we have (capwise) to Powell and Schroder as we consider them finishing touches on Thib's crew. Two-way guys who get after it on both ends. Schroder lives in the paint and Powell with his sick wingspan, shooting and JYD style of play could really make us formidable for a few years, plus we keep all our draft assets and suppliment w / the Dallas picks moving forward.
If you gave Schroder/Powell both 4 year/$120mm starting at $28mm you lose Noel but could still bring Taj/Rose back on exceptions. Rose does because its Thibs and he wants to be here.
your 2021-22 Knicks would be:
PG Schroder
SG RJ
SF Norm Powell
PF Randle
C Mitch
Bench: IQ/Rose/Obi/Taj/Knox
Roster: Pelle, FRP, FRP, Det #2, Luca?
If Mitch has a reasonably healthy season and RJ keeps breaking out we got a real chance with that squad. I would love to see how that D performs under Thibs. Thats 08 Pistons grinding you down every night and every guy can score on you

Mitch gets me frustrated because he's not in the best shape I suspect has some maturity issues. Paying him makes me nervous. He's a revelation at $2mm... paying him $18 is gonna be a different feel.

Id like to draft Ayo Bougknight and a 2nd rd center. Im gonna let Knox go for a future 2. Im gonna let frank walk. I need to hold mitch to see what Noel wants but Id like to keep both.
My cap space Ill go 4 years 72 mm to Kendrick Nunn to play PG here. Want both Burcks and Bullock back Rose back

I agree with you on ayo
I would go ayo and Duarte and a center project or the guys below at number 3.
1. Ayo
2. Duarte
3. Vrenz Bleijenbergh Or Hyland
Hope the new euro league pg can ball
Sign returning guys for extra money that we were going to give Lonzo ball.
Possibly extend Mitch if we can get him for like 10m
Bouknight is a bricklayer from 3.

Do you watch the NBA? You dont win titles by procuring role players. You need impact guys. Schroder/Conley/Powell/Derozan are the impact FAs we can sign. If you dont use you cap space to sign impact players you just wasted it.

I’m just adding my 2 cents on your post
none of the free agents you listed will win you a ring. We are waiting for a player in 2023.
No superstars Are winning anything without role players who perform their role.
As far as returning players we will try to retain burks Noel bullock for extra money next year.
As far as our draft picks unless we are packaging all 4 picks and Toppin to move up we will be drafting the best role players available who we feel can replace bullock burks and a 35 year old rose
In 2 years
As far as Robinson goes. If we can extend him for 8-12m I think they will.
There are no 1A or 1b stars to sign this year. So yes we are running it back again next year with some improvements. Progression and cohesion. Culture building.
Expect 45-53 win team next year
I expect mentorship from taj rose bullock burks for our drafted players for they will be their future replacements.
Ayo dosunmo and rose are Chicago ballers
Burks or bullock can lead by example for Duarte
Third pick draft a project center or Hyland or Vrenz Bleijenbergh
Or
They really like a player and they will trade all 4 picks with Robinson and Toppin to move up
The 🔑 to it all will be if Luca vildoza can be better than Eldridge Payton
If he can provide consistent 3 point shooting, defense and facilitate and offense we can save 20m that we were going to give Lonzo ball.
We can use this money to extend Mitch and bring returning guys back for a season for extra pay if they want another shot and seeing how far they can go as a team
Finally we will be left with around 27-35m to sign another all star to play with Randle in 2023.
It could look like this
pF Randle
SF Barret
c Noel/Robinson
Sg all star number 2
Pg Luca
PF Toppin or a new guy
SF Duarte
C Robinson/taj
Sg iq/Duarte
Pg rose/dosunmo

With Thibs coaching you add Conley/Norman to this crew and back them up with Rose/IQ/Obi/Taj off the bench you looking at conference finals with a young team and additional draft comp still in the queue.
Role players are easy when you have a foundation of 4 close to all-star players. IQ/Mitch/Obi/Taj are good role players. You must get the impact guys first.
You have two core/star guys under value in Randle/RJ. You can spend to keep. Its the Knicks. Let stock the top shelf first and worry about the cheap stuff later.
Adding Schroder and Powell will help solidify us as a perennial a playoff team, and can lock us in as a top 5 team in the east for several years. I dont see a title contender as long as KD and Harden are still wearing New Jersey uniforms. We need an elite wing that can get buckets for himself and others. That stud is in the class of 2023 ( Levine, Beal) not 2022.
