Knicks · shorten the playoff rotation, bench Elf and start Burks (page 1)

fishmike @ 5/16/2021 1:21 PM
SL should be Burks/RJ/Bullock/Randle/Noel
with Rose/Taj/IQ being the bench and maybe a splash of Obi when Randle sits for 3 minutes a half and Frank for offense/defense and situational.
ToddTT @ 5/16/2021 1:37 PM
I have no problem with Payton starting if it means the rotation benefits the other guys. Keeps them fresh, etc.

I’d rather finish strong.

My worry is, in the playoffs, our opponent is going to know how awful Payton is and absolutely blitz us at the start of the game (or whenever he’s on the court). But messing with the continuity could screw us too- glad I’m not the coach!

They’re already doing that

I agree. Payton just ain’t right mentally anymore. I think he's done as a Knick.

PassTheBall @ 5/16/2021 4:49 PM
Payton’s situation is one of the only blemishes of the season. Those minutes should have gone to Frank but it’s too late now to mess with the chemistry. Thibs will start Payton in the playoffs for the 1st 5 mins and have Rose play the rest of the game. That’s been his solution.
JesseDark @ 5/16/2021 5:36 PM
I can see the rotation expanding a little with Frank getting meaningful minutes with his defense.

Rotations shrink in the playoffs, not expand. Thibs has been coaching like its the playoffs so we have our rotations already for the most part.

I trust elf at pg more than Burks.

Burks is not a good ball handler and he gets tunnel vision.
He nearly loss us the game today in the 4th.

Did you watch Elfrid today?

Relax. The idea of Frank seeing more time is not some wild eyed idea. His one skill set is his defense. We’ll see how it plays out.

unstopaball12 @ 5/17/2021 12:06 AM
I think Payton is okay where he is now, if he dosent produce he gets around 12 mins if he produces, he gets around 10 mins max.

I would have wanted Frank in his position though as we need defense to start the game as trae is gonna cook rose and IQ.

Hopefully this week off gives him the drive to atleast be average

Not only is Elf playing really badly he doesn’t even look comfortable out there. He’s been mediocre to bad all season at both ends and the fan and social media criticism has definitely gotten to him

The thought of Trae Young putting up 20 in the first quarter on 9-9 shooting because Elf is starting just cuz makes me nauseous

And Elf has zero skill sets

Thibs doesn’t agree. I think we will see the same rotations with maybe even less Toppin in the playoffs.

xavier @ 5/17/2021 5:24 AM
I think we all know what the playoff rotation will look like.

Payton, RJ, Bullock, Randle, Noel

Rose is the only one who will have safe serious minutes off the bench in every game. Burks (more) and IQ (less) will fill the rest of the minutes in backcourt positions. Taj replaces Noel (and Randle if necessary), and RJ and Randle play for 40 minutes each. And that is the basis.

Others only if needed.

Not true at all. He’s very crafty around the basket. His decision making around the basket sucks but he’s still crafty. With that said, I would consider going with Frank for the first few minutes. He gives the defense you need and he can hit the open shots. Nothing wrong with having Julius run the offense the first few minutes.

41-31 and elf was your starting PG. But not your finisher.
Can we talk about the 3rd period?
franco12 @ 5/17/2021 8:18 AM
I'm going to go with whatever Thibs decides.

I suspect the week off will do wonders for everyone, and with Thibs able to build a game plan to stop the hawks, I think we'll do well. I mean, we should win - we are the 4 seed and have home court.

Perhaps we get this version of Elf:

If we dont he's gonna have a really short leash. Thibs will play Rose/Burks 30-34 minutes each. We will see.

Thibs vs. Nate is a fantastic coaching matchup of two very different teams but both playing great. We finished with the same record. I think we should win but I dont think Hawks go quiet. Too much fire power and good players.

I mentioned this in the gamehtread, but this is beyond W's and L's. Thibs preaches playing a full 48 minute game. Of late, Payton has lacked of effort, looks totally disinterested and has been going through the motions on the court while everyone else plays hard for second of every minute that they are given or rather, they have earned. Payton's play (if you can call it that) goes against all of Thibs principles. Not sure how Thibs can watch game film and look at the +/- and justify given this dude anymore mins
