Knicks · My personal hope (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 7/27/2021 11:56 AM
I like the idea of trading for Sexton. In my eyes hes a premium player at 22 years old and hes has playmaking upside. I dont want to spend 90mm on 35 years old players who fall apart

Im willing to pay up for sexton and take on princes contract. We can fill in players as needed but getting Sexton is a darn coup short and long term. Id like to offer Toppin Knox pick 19 for sexton and Princes contract and Im willing to go to picks 32 and 19 OR IQ.

So my max WITH draft assets is obi knox picks 19 and 32 OR 19 and IQ w Princes contract. I can replace IQ with pick 32--I feel confident about that.
Whatever draft pick we keep 1-2 take a PF to replace Toppin(who is also replaceable)

BUT if I can do what it takes WITHIN reasonable parameters to get Colin Sexton Im doing it

Moonangie @ 7/27/2021 12:34 PM
Or we could sign Lonzo and draft Mitchell/Murphy/Cooper. Sexton is not well-liked, his "hurray for me and F everyone else" attitude won't work well in a team-defense model. Sexton is a legit talent, but attitude counts against him. Thibs will sour on him eventually.
NYKBocker @ 7/27/2021 12:42 PM
Yeah. Sexton just doesn't do it for me.
knicks1248 @ 7/27/2021 12:50 PM
Same thing they said about Rose, same thing they said about Randle

I have enough Faith in this FO and coaching staff to Turn Sexton into a All star.. You think they will pursue some selfish me fist player

This isn't Fizdale or JH

So the thought is Sexton can mature with good coaching and a secure contract! I agree, players evolve. If not, we can blame mills.

fishmike @ 7/27/2021 1:14 PM
I am a buyer on Sexton. For me its pretty simple right now... based on last year and the variety of moves this FO has made from small to large they have earned my trust.

We cant afford to make the kind of trade that got AD to the Lakers, or Holiday to the Bucks, or Harden to the Rockets, etc...

But we arent bad either, and the kind of player(s) the Knicks should be targeting are guys like Randle. Intense players who have showed something and we believe have another level to unlock. I can bring up the thread where many around here wanted Randle traded so badly they would include a FRP send him packing. Instead he dragged us for 80+ games to the 4th seed and immediately gelled with the coaching staff. The guy is a corner stone player now (Randle)

Sexton represents a player with warts but undeniable impact talent. We didnt get smoked by the Hawks because we couldnt defend Young, we got smoked because we didnt have a guy who attack him on the other side. I would much rather force him to chase Sexton who is an utterly gifted scorer and getting better than ELF that's for sure. Thats just one example. Point is Sexton has scoring talent that wins games. Booker's teams were trash for 3-4 years also until he got better players around him. Now he's suddenly phucking mamba lite.

Thibs LOVES guards who attack and Sexton works hard. Giving them a year to work it out sounds like a worthy gamble to me.

Say we use FRPs + Knox to trade for Sexton. You still have an ass ton of cap space. You could bring back the guys who were great last year and upgrade the 3. I think Norm Powell would be fantastic here.

This could be us next year:
PG Sexton
SG RJ
SF Norm
PF Jules
C Mitch
Bench: Rose/Bullock/Obi/IQ/Luka/Pele/Taj

That makes Jules the 2nd option which is much better. RJ and Norm are very Spree/Houston like. Interchangable yet very different. Both are big 2's really but + perimeter defenders. Norm wont cost more than $20mm so you still have what? Like $35mm+ to bring back Rose/Bullock and other guyts. Taj is a a vet min. Pele is signed and a great practice squad guy and could def end up being a McGee/JYD type player for us.

Its just one model but its a model that keeps your picks/assets/flexibility moving forward, upgrades your 1/3 with Sexton/Norm from Elf/Bullock. You lose Burks/Noel who were big contributors, but I love a Rose/IQ/Reggie/Obi/Pele bench. Lots of pop and hustle and enough firepower to turn games around.

Whatever happens I feel pretty confident out FO flipped every stone and settled on what their braintrust thinks is best and so far so good!

VDesai @ 7/27/2021 1:37 PM
Im not all in on Sexton because I really don't see him developing into a PG.
gradyandrew @ 7/27/2021 1:58 PM
Can he pass off to Mitchell?
Chandler @ 7/27/2021 2:05 PM
i'm over Sexton.

he might be tempting for some extra offense, but those small guys get exposed against the better teams in playoffs and he wants to make as much money as Trae, Luka etc. He's not that good. pass. let's draft someone like him

jrodmc @ 7/27/2021 2:06 PM
So I'm wondering who would Sexton say "F--- off" to first, Thibs or DRose?
fishmike @ 7/27/2021 2:14 PM
VDesai wrote:Im not all in on Sexton because I really don't see him developing into a PG.
Would you consider Isaiah Thomas a PG? And if you say yes than why cant Sexton get there?

Sexton is on the rise. Telling are his bumps in assists (+1.4) and FT attemps (+2.3)

That is how you incrementally get better. The guy is such a good bucket getter. He creates so much gravity. The kind that guys like RJ/Mitch/Bullock really feasted off

He's got his warts but thats the only reason he's in the conversation

ramtour420 @ 7/27/2021 2:23 PM
gradyandrew wrote:Can he pass off to Mitchell?

He fakes the floater and throws a no look alley oop. He kind of like a Trae Young in that sense. Except he doesn't need our offensive coordinator to change our whole offense to incorporate PnR as our main point of attack. However, if we do make it a priority to run the O through the PnR he could be our version of Trae.

If we're talking about Celtics Isiah I always saw him as a small two. I like his scoring, but he is a focal point of an O, not a creator- and I think that's a hard type of O to win with. The best ball dominant small 2Gs can still reel off 7 assists from drawing so much attention. If you're gonna have the ball that much 4 assists is kind of week- and that's a big improvement over where he was.

Im not saying don't get him, but I'm not jumping around ready to throw more assets into the trade or take back cap space because I'm not 100% sure he is a building block. Sexton is in a similar situation, but probably a better player than Jamal Crawford was when we acquired him - but remember back then we threw them 3-4 expiring contracts (Frank, Othella and Deke I think). Im down to take a chance but want to be measured here.

VDesai @ 7/27/2021 2:38 PM
gradyandrew wrote:Can he pass off to Mitchell?

Jarrett Allen a similar player. Ive been looking through Sexton highlight packages and its not jam packed with a bunch of Sexton/Allen 2 man game...I wish there was more of that. Most of his highlight packages are of him scoring in a million different ways!

me too... and it depends on the trade but for what we are talking about Sexton feels very measured. Agree IT was more a 2 and so is Sexton but they also won 50+ before he got hurt and he was like 27. Sexton will be hitting 23 when the season starts. Even if we take Prince back etc most Sexton trades still leave us with tons of cap space and our future assets. I like that alot.

I think the Sexton allure is there isnt a more talented "buy low" player out there. Simmons is anything but when you consider the price tags being mentioned. Guys like Graham or Lonzo could be OK but havent shown that move the needle talent. Sexton has that. Or who cares cause we are drafting Cam Thomas

VDesai @ 7/27/2021 2:53 PM
Im fine with Prince- don't want anything to do with Love. Maybe Prince actually gives you what you may lose in Bullock.

I like signing Graham because I can see more obviously how he fits into the flow of what we want to do. But you're right that Sexton's elite skill (scoring) supercedes what Graham can bring (although he is not a bad scorer).

Kind of funny how Simmons does everything Sexton doesn't and vice versa...polar opposite guys.

22 years old? You still have major testosterone flow. Ive listened to him breaking down his own film--he knows basketball and better hes really good. Im sure Derrick Rose at 22 was a perfect gentleman!

This is what I think too, it's the safe choice. The risk /reward Lonzo and Sexton is so much greater.

And since you have tiny little hands, you can't punch your way out, nor use the trigger on a firearm, so you will have to round house kick everyone to death.

Then the main villain is actually a robot. And you realize it's Collin Sexton. Who snuck into the events as a social justice warrior. Got the scent of a furry tree hugger just right. So you are going to shove your tiny little hand up his nostril and reach into his brain pan and hit his emergency deactivation switch. Why didn't he stop you? Because the motherfucker doesn't have any defense at all.

But he left a giant bomb in the middle of the room. The SWAT teams and bomb disposal people finally breach and they can't get into the bomb's arming system, it's too small. It's minuscule. Then the director of the contest says if you can save the world and save all these super models, and stop the bomb, all those women will ravage you later.

So you reach into the bomb device with that toothpick sized fist and pull the red wire and stop the timer. Why wasn't there a secondary trigger in place? Because Sexton don't motherfucking pass to no motherfucking secondary option.

Then an army of supermodels swarm you. And say you can do whatever you want to them. But first they are really hungry. They haven't eaten in 2 weeks. So you take them to Chipotle. They rack up a 7000 dollar bill and gorge and binge and then they throw it all up in the parking lot. Then sit on the curb and cry uncontrollably. You limp inside the Chipotle to one of the employees, your foot is hurting, because you've been round house kicking people for hours, and have him dial my number, because your microscopic hands can't hit the numbers correctly.

"Triple, my old friend" you say, "It's a good thing Collin Sexton was not a team player, because then I would have been royally fucked. Had he offered some defense and had the ability to weaponize his secondary options on offense, well I would have been overwhelmed. But I did my duty and there was no way I was going to let him fuck me."

"Briggs, my old friend," I say, "Sounds like you are out 7 grand and no one is going to fuck you"

"I gotta shovel a couple hundred pounds of vomit out of this motherfucking parking lot, how can 90 pound women eat so much food in one sitting! What are you two complaining about?" shouts the Chipotle employee.

(Two Weeks Later)

Briggs and Triple Threat are eating at a Chipotle. Two employees walk by and are talking.

"Did you hear about the guy working a closing shift who got a blowjob from 4 Miss Universe level supermodels? He was shoveling vomit in the parking lot and he made a trade, his burrito for keep making them burritos since they were on a wild bingeing bender."

Briggs could not hear the rest as bullets aimed at his ankles tore up the ground around him. Seeking over, one could see the glowing red eyes of the Collin Sexton robot. It's wearing a woke T shirt that says 'Everyone Lives Matter. Unless You Are In A Chinese Concentration Camp Making My Signature Shoes'

"It's a good thing Sexton's got bad motherfucking shot selection, or we'd both be dead!" I exclaim. But it's hard to move as the cold chill covers us, because if Sexton is good at anything, it's freezing other people out.

"I WANT THE MAX! I WANT THE MAX!" the Sexton robot yells as he fires wildly everywhere.

"My name is not Max! It's Briggs!"

"WHY CAN'T I GET THE MAX? I DESERVE THE MAX!" the Sexton robot cries out as he stops firing.

"The team is showing up soon! Switch! Switch! Pick up your man!" I chortle out.

Then the Sexton robot runs away as fast as possible. He wants nothing to do with a team concept, it scares him.

Briggs wipes his sweaty brow with his tiny hand, which has zero effect, it's mostly for show and not real effect.

"Triple, have you ever spent 7 grand and the end result was not getting your dick sucked?"

"No Briggs, in my entire life, I've never bought an engagement ring"

This is Brigg's greatest hope. Not to be the hero we want, but to be the hero who can't wear a wrist watch without lots of Gorilla tape.

THE END

BRIGGS @ 7/27/2021 4:46 PM

The way I look at players. I ask who else can do this — because this is your upside. He’s a player who can help control games with the pass dribble shot. We were destroyed by trae young who used that on us. Devonte graham isn't Colin sexton. Get Colin sexton here and let the coach go over what he wants. D Rose was a huge reason for success — Colin sexton is better than Derrick rose. With BOTH guys we have 48 minutes of pressure. I don’t want my pg soft out at the 3 point line. We pay less for graham — we get less. Pay up. Get the premium player— we’ll be happy in the end
