They will defend at a high level.
They have depth on both sides of the ball.
They can weather injuries to the key guys you expect to see some downtime (Rose/Kemba/Mitch)
They have savvy vets and fresh legs.
They have a LOT more scoring firepower than last year. Gone ELF/Frank/Reggie replaced by Kemba/Grimes/Fournier
The big question to me is how good are RJ/Obi/IQ and what kind of step forward do those 3 guys take. You could count Mitch in that group as well but something tells me he's trade chip

"Somehow" is very simplistic. It implies laziness that one either read that contract implications, read the logic of how Randle came to be franchise player, and that lack of other big money contracts available.

RJ is a core piece. Kemba, Fournier, Rose, IQ, Obi, Grimes, McBride, possibly Mitch would be trade chips. All depending on the target(s). As well as the multiple first & 2nd rounders in the war chest.
Knicks are in a quality position where they don't have to break the bank and can deal from a position of strength and not desperation. Wait it out for the team that lost a lot of leverage. Example Beal has a PO next offseason. By the trade deadline, Wizards may be out of time and leverage if Beal decides he wants out. Trade package of Fournier, IQ, & draft capital may make sense to Wiz at that time.
It may not play out like that. But the point is Knicks don't need to chase, they can wait it out and pounce on teams with low leverage. If not they can fall back on a winning record and high odds of winning in the first round.
