Knicks · Obi toppin—- our Shaun Marion (page 1)
BRIGGS@ 10/6/2021 9:27 PM
Not saying he’s a direct match but he has physical similarities and I think Obi”s upside is the best on our team. I wouod like to see him improve a bit on the D but he’s an overall X factor for this team and more than that in years to come

Hahahaha...I love this time of year. Keep at it Briggs. Just the fight for mediocrity has been a long time coming. Just try not to be so hard on Jericho Sims. He's trying and giving the effort.

Not that it's a perfect stat but Marion had a 7 year run averaging more than 5 Defensive Win Shares.Even if I squint I can't see the comparison. Obi gets about a foot higher on a jump than Marion ever did.

I guess Briggs is still without MSG. Ha!
Physically, build wise, great comparison. Broad Shoulders, narrow through the hips. A gazelle- fast, strong, bouncy.
But, between the ears matters a lot, and Marion was just very unique. I think we can hope he develops into a poor mans version of Marion, but that might be.
TheGame@ 10/7/2021 6:32 AM
Toppin looks solid. His defense is still a question mark but offensively, I think he could be a solid starter if given 30 minutes a game. The Knicks are going to have an interesting problem next summer because it should be clear by the end of the season that Toppin deserves more minutes but with Randle and Mitch occupying the 4 and 5 spots, there is no way Thibbs can give him more than 15 minutes a game. Leon Rose is going to earn his paycheck based on how he handles the roster over the next year. We have to turn Toppin into a good asset or player for our team, like how Boston turned Al Jefferson into Kevin Garnett through a smart trade.
fishmike@ 10/7/2021 11:53 AM
I wouldnt trade Topin for anything but another young star player. He's 6'9 with a 7'2 wingspan and vertical game to go with moves and a good jumper. He's a blue chip piece as far as I am concerned and see him as one of the most talented guys on the roster
Panos@ 10/7/2021 12:55 PM
He's a rich man's Anthony Randolph.
Panos@ 10/7/2021 12:56 PM
non-Fugazy Tim Thomas.

physically their size is similar. I think Obi is longer and has a more skilled game. TT's moves around the basket where him just outjumping guys and flipping the ball to the rim, although TT had a smoother J for whatever that is worth.
We had some guys saying Obi was laterally slow and was always going to be a defensive liability bla bla blaaaaa
He doesnt have to be anything but Obi. The coaching staff loves him. All he does is work hard. Its clear from summer league and now preseason the work he put in is real and an RJ type jump is possible. Obi was 4ppg/2rebs in 11 mins last year. I expect something like 10/5 in 15 minutes where his per36 #s really jump and he much more involved at both ends. He's gonna call for the ball and his boy IQ is gonna set him up as they have literally been working on this shit all summer.

Don't remember TT being anything like Obi.
TT was a legit 6'10" SF before that was a thing. He could have been an all-timer if he has a head.
Dude shot well over .400 from 3 as a Knick, before 3's were what they are now.
Had all the talent in the world. There is nothing he didn't have the ability to do. He jus didn't have the drive and/or the IQ.

Again, some rooks had a tough time last year. college season ended abruptly, got locked down, gets drafted two weeks before camp, got hurt, etc. Some Rooks got off to a good start like IQ. He came on last year and had a full summer to improve. I hope he is so good teams in need of his services be calling us making offers we can't refuse IF WE CAN'T FIND THE MINUTES FOR HIM!
Once upon a time in his second year Keith Van Horn avged 21pts and 8 rebs. Marbs was "all alone". He was about 16pts and 7 rebs when here for one season. TT was talented but lacked the motivation. Obi has a good rep as a hard worker. sometimes its not enough, but Thibs at least respect him.
BRIGGS@ 10/7/2021 11:58 PM
Looks like a young Shaun Marion. Not as good on D and Im aware its SL

By the time RJ was 12 he and his family knew he had the potential to be a lottery pick. Obi grew up differently. He didn't stop growing until he was 18 and by then he was looked over by the top schools. He landed at a small school and through talent and hard work became player of the year. Playing less talented players surely helped his case. Now he's in the NBA with one of the best coaches around. His game is still improving so who can say what his ceiling is. He's still under contract for 3 years and the Knicks don't need to do anything other than keep him developing. Thibs will figure out the minutes going forward,I think there's a future where he shares time with Randle. If Taj can,so can Obi.

It’s our duty as fans to:
1. Apply a letter grade to the draft by which said player is taken. 2. If not happy, stay that way to prove the rating was accurate. “Being right” is important! 3. Compare player to another as his ceiling. 4. Not consider long term and that players can evolve for 3 years. 5. Argue with others about 1-4.

Not just a duty, but The Law. Applies to trades as well.
SergioNYK@ 10/8/2021 10:18 AM
Maybe there could be some similarities offensively but Matrix was a beats defensively! Not sure Obi could reach that level.
Nalod@ 10/8/2021 12:15 PM
The maxtrix was a 4 time all star, played 18 seasons. Started NBA career at age 21. IF that’s OBI’s ceiling that’s ok by me!!!!!
Philc1@ 10/9/2021 9:25 AM
He has some Marion in his game

This 1000x
Disappointing when I see the "old heads" forget how good some of the older players were.
