Knicks · What’s Wrong with RJ and how to fix it (page 2)

Fixed!
KnickDanger @ 1/4/2022 10:13 PM
Was looking at Jimmy Butler’s stats - it took him about four seasons when he turned 25/26 to become an impactful player. The rush in these parts to condemn young guys who are 19, 20, 21….it’s just f@#king miserable.
TheGame @ 1/4/2022 10:26 PM
RJ focused on driving and posting up and limited his 3s against the Pacers. This is exactly how he needs to play from now on. Before he was spending too much time trying to just hit jumpers off of Randle kickouts. He needs to stop waiting and start initiating offense and focus on driving and posting up. Hopefully, he will play with this mindset going forward.

Fans seem to forget (because this is his 3rd year) that he's still the 2nd youngest player on our entire team (@ only 21 years old).

He left after his Freshman year @ Duke and hypothetically speaking he should still be in NCAA college right now (as a Senior).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with RJ. He's just an NBA pup. And I'm 100% confident that bu the age of 23-24 he's going to develop into a two way perennial All-Star (and towards the end of last year was only a sign of things to come).

Tonight he goes out there and plays 41 minutes while also dropping 32 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal (off of 12/20 from the field).

There is absolutely nothingness wrong with R.J. BARRETT.

It's just fans seem to often forget that...

A.) He's only 21 years old.

B.) The 2nd youngest player on the Knicks.

C.) Should still technically be in college @ Duke.

D.) Still developing and learning from mistakes.

E.) A much better draft pick than (lazy) Zion Williamson (R.J. was rated higher than Zion coming out of HS too).

By the time he's 23-24 years of age; he'll be a perennial All-Star (as a two way player).

RJ Barrett became one of just 7 players All-Time in NBA history to tally at least 800+ points, 250+ rebounds, 100+ assists, and 50+ made 3PT's before turning 20 years old.

The other 6 are:
Kobe Bryant.
LeBron James.
Carmelo Anthony.
Jayson Tatum.
Luka Doncic.
Kevin Durant.

The other six are: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Jayson Tatum, Luka Doncic and Kevin Durant.

RJ Barrett also became one of only eight players in NBA history to tally more than 2,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists before turning 21 years old.

The other 7 are:
Kobe Bryant,
Kevin Garnett,
Tracy McGrady,
Carmelo Anthony,
LeBron James,
Luka Doncic,
Kevin Durant.

R.J. Barrett?

In regards to NBA success @ only 21 years old?

Is already in a league of his own.

Wake up New York fans.

You keep saying that he should be a senior in college AND he'll be a perennial all-star. These days those concepts are mutually exclusive. All-Star players are all drafted after 1 or *maybe* 2 years of college. All-Star level players don't make it through 4 years of college. So that's really a strawman thing to keep harping on.

Let's hold off on future All-Star talk?

No thank you.

R.J. Barrett.
2,522 points.
858 rebounds.
426 assists.
122 steals.
240 3s made.

(Those were his career numbers heading into tonight and he's not even 22 years old).

Zion Williamson.
2,187 points.
591 rebounds.
276 assists.
73 steals.
10 3s made.

New York dodged a draft night bullet.

R.J. @ only 21 years old is more special than some realize.

Great win for the team and hopefully RJ plays like this from now on. Limit the threes and drive more. The MSG crew said the same thing.

Well, this is nothing new for RJ. He’s been getting to the rack in college and only using his left. What’s interesting is he wasn’t a 3 pt shooter in college and still got to the rim, especially in transition.

The difference now is he can shoot 3s and layup with his right hand. Dude is a self motivator and hard worker. Hopefully his game yesterday will give the FO and fans some patience. We might have something special that we keep looking for in trades. Just need to add a consistent player who specializes in something. That’s how u build around RJ who’s a jack of all trade but specialty in getting to the rack or the heart of the defense. Defense collapse and it’s an easy drop off to Mitch or open 3. RJ appears to be a strong playmaker who eventually will become an all star.

Allanfan20 @ 1/5/2022 7:47 AM
He’s going to still have to find some semblance of a shot again though or else if we make the playoffs, the good teams will just take his left from him entirely. He is pretty incredible at his strengths though.

He needs to get his 3pt percentage back up to 40% which it was last year. That opens it up for him driving to the basket

SergioNYK @ 1/5/2022 8:47 AM
Good teams will take away RJ's drives and I know it's not cool anymore but let RJ post up! You can still play inside-out basketball.

Sounds like you are talking to the coaching staff. Thibs runs the offense and they should run a triangle style where RJ is on the block and there’s movement around him. If that’s not open, he’s pretty good around the rim. But my fear is his lack of explosiveness. He’s still a slashing guard who scores in transition. Half court offense is where he needs to improve. Post ups and open jumpers

No he doesn't.

Michael Jordan had a career 3PT% of .327%.

Kobe Bryant had a career 3PT% of .329%.

R.J. Barrett has a career 3PT% of .360% (.329% this year).

All 3 players were/are 6'6.

R.J. Barrett doesn't need to improve his 3PT percentage. He needs to attack the basket more often and become more of a playmaking playmaker with assists.

Don't feel embarrassed for me, feel embarrassed for those who feel and believe that EVERY PLAYER must become a "great 3PT .400+% 3PT shooter".
