He needs to get his 3pt percentage back up to 40% which it was last year. That opens it up for him driving to the basket
No he doesn't.

Michael Jordan had a career 3PT% of .327%.

Kobe Bryant had a career 3PT% of .329%.

R.J. Barrett has a career 3PT% of .360% (.329% this year).

All 3 players were/are 6'6.

R.J. Barrett doesn't need to improve his 3PT percentage. He needs to attack the basket more often and become more of a playmaking playmaker with assists.

I'm embarrassed for you, this makes zero sense

Don't feel embarrassed for me, feel embarrassed for those who feel and believe that EVERY PLAYER must become a "great 3PT .400+% 3PT shooter".

Never said RJ has to become a “great three point shooter”. He just simply needs to get back to what he did last season

Who knows? He may never shoot. 400+ % from 3 again but who cares? We never drafted him to become a 3PT specialist.

He's currently shooting a career high 2PT% of .463%. Which is more important to me.

I actually want R.J. Barrett to stop shooting so many 3s. He's not a 3 point sniper and @ Duke he never was good at it. I want to see him attack the paint more with aggressive drives and also become more of a playmaking playmaker with assists to teammates.

R.J shooting more 3s is the last thing I want from him ad a potential two way beast.

RJ Will improve everything. That’s who he is and that’s what he will tell you. I understand what NYK is saying. The focus shouldn’t be on increasing his 3pt shooting percentage. But RJ will improve in this area regardless if we discuss it or not because that’s who he is.
NYKMentality @ 1/5/2022 11:53 AM
During R.J. Barrett's 1st 9 games?
He was averaging...

35.4 minutes.
19.2 points.
5.8 rebounds.
2.7 assists.
FG% of .474%.
3PT% of .400%
6-3 record.

Those were borderline All-Star numbers right out the gate.

And he's back to last years form (currently).

During previous 9 games?

He's been averaging...

31.8 minutes.
19.9 points.
5.0 rebounds.
2.6 assists.
FG% of .439%.
3PT% of .370%.
5-4 record.

It's only a matter of time before this kid begins to average 25+ points per game because at only 21 years old he's already very good.

Once RJ realize he can score 25 in his sleep, the Knicks and Randle will look better. All he has to do is stay aggressive as he said when they asked him about his 1st quarter explosion. I think RJ will sometimes shoot too many 3s early in the game and that dictates his drive and aggression. But during the last game, he was aggressive 1st and then his 3s started falling. U need ur legs on jumpers. So it makes since for RJ to attack the rim first then shoot some 3s.

I agree with you, I didn’t like he was used last year. He was basically a spot up shooter. He is a lot more versatile this season. His creation off the dribble is a night and day difference.

Exactly man.

I know everyone wants him to become some type of unreal .500% 3 point shooter (all because he shot .400% from 3 last year).

But R.J. Barrett was never and I repeat never drafted #3 overall to become a 3PT specialist. Because he only shot .308% as a Freshman @ Duke.

R.J averaged 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game off of a 2PT FG% of .529% along with downright tremendous Defense on the wings/perimeter.

And that's why R.J. Barrett was drafted #3 overall. To become an attacking scorer who attacks the paint as a playmaker with rebounding ability on the wings and A+ perimeter Defense; not to become some deadly 3PT corner specialist.

Which is why it bothers me when we continue to read about posters focusing on and harping all over his "3PT percentage" (regardless if @ .400% or .329%).

Heck.

In High School R.J. Barrett's senior season was the stuff of legends. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 28.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, leading Montverde Academy to a 35-0 record and national championship. He was not a 3PT shooter in HS either but yet ranked as the world's #1 HS recruit heading into Duke. And nope. Not because of "3PT SHOOTING" either.

That's why R.J. Barrett was drafted #3 overall and his NCAA 3PT% of only .308% had nothing to do with it.

R.J. as a Rookie = 3.5 3PT attempts per game.
R.J. last year = 4.3 3PT attempts per game.
R.J. this year = 5.4 3PT attempts per game.

R.J. should shoot no more than 2-3 3's per game (unless he starts off on fire from deep) and he's easily an NBA 25+ PPG scorer.

@ Duke he averaged 22.6 points. You know what stopped him from averaging 30+ PPG as only a Freshman @ Duke? He averaged 6.2 3PT attempts per game (and only made 1.9 of them).

This R.J. must improve his "3PT SHOT" talk must stop.

☆ He was never ranked as the World's #1 High School player because of 3s.
☆ He was never drafted #3 overall out of Duke because of 3s.

Yes, but he was drafted on his potential and part of that hinged on his ability to hit the three. Even RJ realized this. That why he focused in this the off season leading into last year. It's unlikely RJ will hit your projected "All Star" ceiling without the threat of a three.
https://www.thestepien.com/2019/06/18/rj...

Offensive Swing Factor: Improve feel, finishing ability, decision-making, and shooting (stepbacks and C&S).

Jumper: Not a good jump shooter right now and does not have consistent form – misses long and wide. Low release point. Turns his entire body when he shoots and, aside from lining up his left arm with the basket, and he does not square up. Inconsistent release point – sometimes it’s fluid, other times (usually off movement) there is a hitch. Long term, I think he can hit some simple C&S attempts and will be able to play off ball a little. *Side note, on his stepback jumpers, he often lands with a straight back leg – that’s going to kill his cartilage.* Looks comfortable taking C&S jumpers if they’re off very minimal movement (just flashing to the open spot) as well as with stepback jumpers…he’s just not consistent with either, and I don’t know if he ever will be, given his form.
