as for the thread -- i would not say it is safe to assume had the knicks gotten the guy, everything would have played out as it has now. it could have been worse, or perhaps better. throw in curry as a similar compare point. his 3rd season was cut short to injury. would the knicks have bailed before an extension if he had landed hear and that same injury took place?

Maybe you're younger than me but being a knicks fan in the 90's was not a hip or trendy thing. Literally everyone was a Chicago Bulls fan and the knicks were the enemy. That's the main reason NBA TV ratings have nose dived in the past 20 years - Jordan retired and the fair weather bulls fans have nothing to do now except bash the knicks on cable tv talk shows or buy into media hype anytime the team plays well

And then there is the fact I do live in NYC. But I do listen to and read national media and to my mind Knicks "hate" and "clowning" reached a peak prior to last season. In my opinion it in essence started as "Phil hate" -- the mess PJ inherited compounded by his own mistakes but mostly his aloofness and condescension to the media. And subsequently he was ripped for picking KP (I remember Stephen A screaming that it should have been Stanley Johnson). The same media killed the Knicks a few years later for "the worst trade ever" when they jettisoned Douchezingis for picks and cap space. The Frank pick too (fairly in retrospect I suppose but it was hated and clowned before he ever stepped on the court at the age of 18). I recall tons of ridicule when they "lost" the Zion sweepstakes via ping pong balls. I recall an ESPN gasbag calling RJ "a bust" after his second Summer League game! And don't forget the trashing after KD and Kyrie signed maxes to be with the Nets. These are just off the top of my head.
Anyway, no I don't think the Knicks are the focus of the national mindset -- they're too busy brown nosing the Nets, Lakers, Warriors etc. But that they are sloughed off as "same old Knicks" as a cheap punchline and then encouraged to "do whatever it takes' to get Westbrook/Beal/Wall/Lillard/Myles Turner....

Well Put! outside of NYC nobody really cares about the Knicks. They care about KD alot but not the Nets. Lebron has his followers and they don't care about where he plays. Jordan lovers dont' care a rats ass about the Bulls.
If he was in the modern game with Lebron he too would likely have moved about to get paid and win. Bulls could pay him over 30mm his last three years. Nobody could pay him over 18mm. This was 25 years ago!!!

its the clippers talk of the 80s/90s and perhaps the bullets when they were the clippers of the east. folks may have said something, it wasnt some fear based stuff or those teams are some sort of threat to anyone but themselves. this is where the knicks have been for nearly 20+ years with few bright spots. having been to other areas and lived away for so long, i have not seen any locals talk about the knicks unless its to say 'meh, they are not going anywhere'. that isnt trashing, its been reality. i would expect team moves will get looked at and maybe laughed at. its what happens to bad teams.
nfl for my youth it was the bucs. after they made a terrible choice they went into a loooong run of 10+ loss years. folks expected failure and made fun. that to me isnt the same as hate. whats to hate, they already stink and have for a while? the level of care doesnt exist for teams that are clown shows, 0 success on the field of play. making fun of bad teams is not the same thing as what i do see with the yankees. thats real hate i see. you could toss in the redsox there as well especially now that they broke through. maybe it was sox fans that were more grating than the team itself however.
