Knicks · Here’s why I won’t give up on Randle (page 1)
Knicks badly need to fix the center and PG positions to get the best out of both of them. Knicks need an outside shooting threat at center that can still anchor a defense. Randle should be making plays more in the post, but he can’t because mitch and Noels defender is always hedging, and willing to give up the occasional offensive rebound or putback to prevent Randle from attacking the basket. Same goes for Barrett, who gets his shot blocked more often than not due to a big man always hanging out in the lane. If we land Myles Turner or Mo Bamba, suddenly a defending center has a tough decision to make. Hang out in the lane and give up an open three, or allow Randle the space to go one on one.
As for the PG position, sure Kemba gives more spacing than most. But what good is that when teams no longer respect his ability to drive to the basket, and he’s not particularly comfortable as a catch and shoot player. Knicks need a PG who can get into the teeth of the defense but also provide just enough of an outside shooting threat. Brunson, Schroder and Dinwiddie are probably the closest to fits there that are realistic. Drose definitely is when healthy. But we simply can’t rely on that, or the Knicks other options to fill that gap when he’s out. At shooting guard we are fine with Fournier or Grimes sharing the floor in a Randle/ Barrett, as they are high efficiency catch and shoot players
So really what this comes down to is putting our best players in the best possible position to succeed. Randle in particular is really forced into playing a role he simply isn’t at his best other than some sort stretches or the ideal environmental circumstances last last year. Get a real stretch 5 and a real PG who can take on some playmaking duties and see what Randle can really do.
Knixkik wrote:I get the body language and effort issues. We had the same qualms about Melo. But in the midst of last season’s success, we all sort of forgot about what Randle does best. He was never supposed to be viewed as a perimeter oriented big man like he thrived in last year. He is ultimately a bully ball big who’s added outside shooting and playmaking provides more versatility for him on offense. Bottom line is, this starting lineup is poorly assembled for Randle (and Barrett) to be at their best.Knicks badly need to fix the center and PG positions to get the best out of both of them. If Randle was a higher level player I would agree with all of this - but he's not and has a lot of warts that are unlikely to improve. Yes he can improve his decision-making and iso-ball somewhat - but he's still slow and hasn't improved his ability to handle pressure.
Mitch would be a fine fit in most teams - see Atlanta and how they use Capella. That's easily attainable and realistic if he doesn't have to fit around Randle. Same with Barrett and other players on the roster. Why change all of them to fit around a very good player? That's where I keep getting stuck w/Randle - even with the ideal players around him (and who are they whether attainable or not) we would still be below that higher level. Much easier to move him if you believe the ceiling height is lower due to your best player's limitations.
Agree 1000% about the impact of a quality PG and it would help Randle no question. It would help quite a lot!
Just think it's easier to move Randle (most value) vs trading Mitch for a stretch 5, Fournier for a Bullock, acquiring a PG that fits around Randle, etc..
Should be some drama the next week for sure!
last year was fabulous no doubt. But when he doesn't shoot 3s at 40% he looks like he does this year, or the year before last, or the year before that (when AD was drawing a lot of attention) and not clogging the middle like Mitch or Nerlens
the reality if he can't shoot at that level he's not worth his contract and even if he's good he's not the level of player you build around. If he does shoot at 40% it's a different situation
and his attitude this year is beyond ass.
This is why the Myles Turner trade talk made a ton of sense (for the Knicks at least). His injury quieted that down.
As far as the PG position. The Knicks were fine until Rose went down. So they don't nec. need to make any drastic moves. At worst they get by with Kemba, Quick and Burks until Rose gets back. But I don't think they NEED to give up a bunch of draft capital and/or core players for a PG.
In the end, the Knicks just need to play better defense and start hitting their shots. RJ has been doing it pretty much all season, the rest of the guys, including Fournier, have been wildly inconsistent. Randles shot seems to have completely disappeared.

If Randle had the paint to himself, you really think he would get shut down by guards ? He doesn’t take advantage of those matchups because mitchs man is always hedging towards him. My exact purpose of this thread.
Almost 2 out of the 3 years he has been here, he has been inefficient, low energy, and bad body language. His actions brought circus like tendencies back to MSG. The franchise is extending more energy coddling him, covering for him (the second apology), than the energy he is extending on the court. I hear people saying he should be a 2nd or 3rd option but he hasn't shown a consistent willingness to want to do it. In fact, he struggles off the ball. I don't think he is worth the trouble....I'm not saying move him for scraps, I want a fair deal, but I'm on board for moving him off of this roster...

for two years he hasn't so... Everyone does it now. it started with marcus smart. then Atlanta used it in the playoffs. now everyone does. it frustrates his dribble and he gets confused. He should pass out and then reestablish down low but i haven't seen it.
on the flip side i have seen RJ punish smaller defenders.
people think he's bully ball because of the way he looks but that's not really his game.

I'm starting to feel the same way. I don't even know how to begin building around him. He needs ball handling betas that will allow him to run the offense? The playoffs showed that's not good enough. What happens if the Knicks somehow get Brunson? Is he going to have the same issues with usage that he has with Kemba? I don't want to hear about last year. Right now Julius is playing like a sixth man and that's not good enough.
I don't want to build a team around a mopey dickhead

To this day, I never understood why NBA coaches began allowing him to bring the ball up the court. He seems so entitled because of it. It actually bothers me a little.

I don’t want to say building around him is easy, but you start with getting a stretch big who can anchor the defense, and a PG who can create off the dribble but also be a 3pt threat. Randle has only played with Rose as far as fitting the mold at PG. And hasn’t played with anyone at center who defenses respect outside of dunking. Think about how drastic this sounds before saying it’s not worth trying to get it right with Randle. And remember it’s not just Randle. These same factors are holding back RJ to a degree.
And as far as your Kemba comment, has Randle had the same issues with Rose? Of course not. So what makes you think Randle is to blame and not Kemba for them not fitting together? Kemba just isn’t any good anymore.

From what I can remember, it wasn't like Randle was lighting it up when Rose was starting. I'm tired of this stretch center excuse also. How many stretch bigs do the Warriors start? Or the Suns? Great, or even good players still impact the game, regardless of how many stretch centers are on their roster. If Randle needs more floor spacing so bad, how bad he starts hitting the wide open shots he's given?

Plus there's more ways than one to be a stretch big. If a player leaves Mitch for example that should be an easy, i mean easy, alley opp. the center isn't randle's problems. it's his poor shooting.
his defensive rebounding and passing are still assets. His decision making, shooting, and attitude have regressed

You need to build a team around your best players for better or worse. Your best players are Randle and Barrett. They are at their best in open space and an empty lane. You can watch legit 1 quarter of a Knicks game and see whenever Randle is on the floor there’s a center who is playing off of Mitch or Noel and hedging to Randle. If he is knocking down 3s it’s no problem. But he’s at his best as a finisher. I want to see Randle and Barrett being put in position to succeed. If you’re expecting your best players to be at their best regardless of who is around them than you will never build a winning team.

It's not about Elf. It's about most PF needing a strong PG and unfortunately Kemba Walker is atrocious and Rose is hurt.
