Dude is polished in so many areas and so well rounded as a player. He may not be the dynamic, high usage player as RJ but what he brings on both ends of the court is special IMHO
Feel RJ toughness, drive to succeed and aggressiveness to the basket is something Grimes still needs to prove he has. Grimes right now is a high volume shooter and shown he can be really good on the defensive side. But I do not think he has showed to be a a high level starter just yet. Nor better all around player than RJ. Grimes rarely looks to set up others, still needs to improve his mid range and needs to become more aggressive to the basket. Someone that can shoot FT's as well as he does should try to get to the line much more. Think he will get better at all those with more time. When he does, he will be a really good starting player. To be fair, RJ sometimes gets enamored with outside shooting as well and gets into spans where he lacks aggressiveness to the basket. Can say that Grimes should be in late in games if RJ is not playing well. Think there has been inconsistency in Thibs this year with that. Last year it seemed he was going with the hot hands late in games much more.
Can say it is a good problem to have as it is never bad that a kid you picked up in the draft is even in the conversation of replacing one of your better players. However, right now, still feel RJ has a higher ceiling and belongs higher in place.
Why does it have to be "Grimes vs. R.J"?
Why not Grimes @ SG and RJ at SF ala H20 and Spree 2.0?
If we're talking SG? Then why not Grimes vs. Evan Fournier?

Because I was interested in what everyone else's thought process and basic scouting and look-ahead for RJ and Grimes.
It's a hypothetical exercise.
Meanwhile I see Fournier still lives rent free and will be there for a long time.

I think it is a throwback to Martin's earlier post that he isn't quite sold on RJ yet. It's a theoretical, you're picking for a pick up game, and your choice for SG is Grimes or Barret.
And I kinda agree. Grimes opens up the floor in a way that Barrett has yet to show.
I love Barrett's drive to the hoop. But when he is open at the 3pt line, as a defender, I am not scared. Go ahead, and shoot.
Grimes was lethal last night from 3.
For Thibs, he won't even be debating this, he'll be debating between Fournier and Burkes, and will settle on Fournier.

I just feel Quentin Grimes and R.J. Barrett can become NYs next 2.0 version of H20 and Spree Vol. 2.0 once getting a chance to start alongside of one another (especially 2-3 years from today once in their primes).

I am definitely not sold on RJ as a complete player or high level ceiling because of his flaws, haven't changed there. He will be good, he may get an all-star designation. I don't see him making big jumps after an offseason and it seems like his ceiling is getting more defined and not in a good way.
When I look at a player I am constantly asking myself what a player can't do or doesn't seem to have it in him to adjust to. For instance, Randle can't seem to adjust to double teams. Even when he hasn't taken a dribble, he doesn't see the double team coming, doesn't know what to do when he gets double teamed, can't think his way out of it. For the past 3 years teams have double teamed him and he still is the same player.
By the age of 21, with the coaching and training RJ has had, the basic fundamentals of using your offhand should be better. Like waaaaayyyy better for a guy as talented as RJ. Same with the FT shooting. Same with knowing when there are 2 defenders in front of you, your instincts to drive the ball right into both of them, well that's just not good. He should know by now.
I think it's a good analogy, picking for a pick-up game, but picking for games over the next 3 years and needing to stick with one guy.

It's a nice thought but also useless for this thought process.
Someone else is helping me out

This is as much a PG problem as anything.

PG would help tremendously. But let's not forget that both RJ and Julius were shooting pretty good before DRose was traded for last year.
Both guys have big drops in their 3point shooting. And maybe a PG would help some but what would REALLY help is just making those shots
BigDaddyG wrote:I'd hold off a bit on that one. I remember thinking the same thing about Quick last season.
Grimes is definitely a keeper tho.
Yep, I'm better off projecting them as out of the league within 3 years have a better chance at being right. People thought Trier was a 6th man

Barrett had a tremendous 3pt shooting slump early last season and his 3pt shooting took off after the Drose trade. No idea if there was a connection there, but it definitely didn’t hurt. Barrett was never going to be a consistent 40% 3pt shooter because teams would game plan for him more. Now that he’s been a featured player, he needs to make adjustments.
Both are good players. RJ was way more hyped and so far has had a solid first 3 years. I’d still say RJ has way higher upside. Tbh I think Randle hurts RJ a little because RJ is really an undersized point forward forced to play as an off ball 2 Guard with Randle on the floor

Both are way more talented anyone the jets have drafted last 10 years
Further reason why I hesitate on RJ, his finishing is awful.

He's at 18 ppg this season with awful finishing. Imagine where he could be with even just mediocre finishing. The question is if you feel he still has time to develop / shed bad habits or if he already peaked at 20 years old and is now regressing slightly at 21. Ya....I know, he's had top class training all these years........yada yada yada.
I'm still taking the optimistic view.

RJ will get better, there is no doubt. I just don't think he will have those giant leaps as I had hoped.

One more note on this. We never want a Knicks player to be just mediocre, that's playoff doom or not even getting to playoffs no less doing well in playoffs.
High usage and mediocre is still bad.
Not controversial at all.
Although I would like to see them on the Knicks together, I would move RJ TOMORROW for an upgrade at the PG position.
I'm dangling Barrett and/or Robinson in front of the Thunder and see if they will bite on them for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
