Knicks · Under the radar free agent PG: Tyus Jones (page 1)
Knixkik wrote:Currently backing up Ja and is easily one of the best backup PGs in the league. Solid playmaker and really good defender. Improved shooter. He is only 25 years old. Duke alum that shares the same agent as Barrett (due for a contract extension.) He isn’t some world beater but would be a nice pairing with Rose as an alternative to Jalen Brunson. Memphis was winning with Ja out and Jones running point.
Agree - he would sure cost a lot less as well.
Same with Brunson... lets target guys with significant upside or focus on developing our own guys as players or assets.
Tyus Jones is exactly where he should be. Playing meaningful backup minutes as a late first rounder. Occasional spot starter... ask more from him and you see the limitations 6 footers with average athleticism and average shooting face in the NBA.
Sorry mate.. its a no for me. This FA class is gross btw... I get this post. There isnt much out there.

I hear that and hope that the FO makes their decisions based on helping our team vs working with players Thibs likes... he's playing Cam not a bit and that seems to be going well. I'm not a KAT fan but if the FO felt he would help us - they should make whatever deal regardless of his history with Thibs. I mean what is Thibs going to do in a few years when Rose and Taj are in the Big 3 league? He'll have to retire or go back to the Bulls?

Agree. I’d be shocked if we signed him plus we don’t even have cap room

I see constant comments about us not having cap room. Knicks can very easily create cap room. It’s a non-issue.

How? The Knicks have $120 million on the books for next season. The salary cap is currently $112 million. Rumor is it will increase to $120 million but we have no team options on any of our players unless you count Sims who we are resigning after extending him a qualifying offer

Burks, Noel and Walker can all easily be moved into other teams cap space / exceptions. We would have to give up a 2nd round pick maybe. You move 2 of those guys and you have plenty of cap space. If you want.

And teams will do us these great big favors all for just a future 2nd round pick? That’s some Mother Theresa stuff right there

It’s not a “favor “. Burks and Noel are rotation players. Kemba is done but still won’t require much to move. These are players on expiring contracts. Knicks could have moved Burks (plus reddish) during the deadline and had cap space this summer. There’s a million ways to get there. Every year teams do it. It’s not some pie in the sky thing. We aren’t talking about Fourniers contract or another long term deal like over the years. We are talking about rotation players on expiring contracts.

yeah but that is not happening this summer... and teams that do it attach assets. So you are looking at a scenario where you are giving up picks/assets to move players you just signed a year ago, and that is to sign who?

You can easily move 2 of those players by attaching 2nd round picks. Burks you may not need to. And it would be to sign Brunson, or in this case Jones at slightly above MLE.

You are making stuff up... see the cap situations above. Tell me one trade that gets us cap space to sign someone... oh and that also means we let Mitch walk. Cap space is not happening without fairy dust and some of spongebob's imagination

We have to be realistic. Yes, it's good to shoot for the stars. But the team also needs to have a contingency plan and Tyus Jones is as good as one as anything else out there.

We’re picking 8th so forget about a pg in the draft.

Brunson, SGA, Fox, D Murray from the Spurs. Hopefully someone of this level (Brunson being the minimum) and age range. Rose as backup. McBride and Jokubaitis are the 2 developmental backups. I don’t really see the need to draft a PG this year. We have everything but a high level starter, which isn’t a given this draft.

Brunson and Jones dont move the needle and you have to spend to get them so what is the point. Those are guys you get when you have nobody. We have somebodys. We have Rose/IQ/McBride and thats good enough to pass on guys like Brunson or Tyus Jones. If the Knicks were to win the lottery and move up to the top 3 packaging that pick. Maybe something like Cam/Obi/Pick#2 for DMurray. Then you resign Mitch and you have a great defensive core and still a bunch of young guys to develop in McBride/IQ/Grimes/Sims.
Of course that is not happening with pick #12 so its a pipe dream.
Best bet is to build chemistry and develop guys and hope someone pops.
