Knicks · Which PG path would you Want? (page 1)

jskinny35 @ 3/24/2022 12:22 PM
Who would you want to acquire at the hypothetical/approx cost listed below?

Brunson - would lose Mitch in the process

Donovan Mitchell - but would lose RJ, Toppin and have to send 2/3 additional #1 picks to acquire (Randle deal would be no brainer for me)

Tyus Jones - can be signed and traded for Burks or Kemba and a 2nd rounder

Damian Lillard (and filler) - for Randle, Fournier, Grimes, 2 #1 picks (very limited protection)

Davion Mitchell - for Obi and future protected #1 pick

Terry Rozier - for Noel and Burks

Use this years #9/10 pick, add 2 #1 picks (Dall and ours - limited protection) and send out other team's choice (eg Burks, Rose, Randle, Reddish, Toppin, Deuce, IQ for Top 3 pick in this years draft to find a PG. Would take back crappy contract in process.

I agree about swinging for the fences if it's possible to acquire a top 3 pick without giving up RJ, Grimes and either Reddish or Toppin, IQ or Deuce, etc

If that's unsuccessful (likely) - I would go for Tyus Jones as the cost is low and don't think we should gut the farm for the others. Brunson is a decent option but worry he plays better because he's currently playing next to a stellar playmaker already. It would be a different role and he would cost a lot IMO.

Which path do you think would help the Knicks best in the short-term and long-term?

Is there a different/better player or path to take?

Package Burks and Noel for Dinwiddie after Cuban locks up Brunson long term. Draft a pg at 10
TPercy @ 3/24/2022 12:38 PM
To be honest our best option is looking like IQ. He's made a lot of progress on his reads in pnr and I believe hell come back an even better ball handler next season. Not ideal, but I'd prefer that over splurging on the guys mentioned. A brogdon trade wouldn't be the worst thing, but Id prefer just going with IQ.

IQ
Burks
Barrett
Randle or Keegan Murray
Robinson

Rose
Fournier
Reddish
Toppin
Noel

I'm down to run it back with Randle, but maybe there is a trade with portland can package with our pick to move up and grab Murray. I doubt Murray will ever be a star, but if he can be a 3 and D forward with scoring chops then thats the way forward for us until we find a pg + #1 option.

I’d prefer Brunson or Tyus Jones in these scenarios. I’d also like to look into Gilgeous-Alexander for a deal involving multiple picks and expiring contracts. He’s close friends with Barrett, and Giddey is the PG of the future for Okc. SGA is on the slightly older side of their rebuild and is probably out of position there now. Building around he and Barrett, plus taking the ball out of Randles hands more and making him a finisher could turn things around here.

jskinny35 @ 3/24/2022 1:20 PM
I like the SGA and Dinwiddie options mentioned - how much do you think SGA would cost us and is he a decent enough outside shooter to pair with our other so so outside shooting players?
EwingsGlass @ 3/24/2022 1:46 PM
I have a hard time giving up the Knicks pick if Benedict Mathurin is on the board. Rozier for Noel and Burks is probably the best value move here if you rule out all the gambling moves. That's just an asset consolidation move where we end up with the best player in the trade. It also leaves most assets still intact. I think you make that trade if available no matter what else you are thinking of doing.

Rozier/Rose/McBride
Fournier/Quickley/Grimes
Barrett/Reddish[Mathurin?]
Randle/Toppin/Gibson
Robinson/Sims/_____

I agree with this. Adding to the cupboard only confuses Thibs. Randle, Obi, Quickly and a number one for Zion. Resign Mitch.

Zion
Cam
Mitch
RJ
McBride

Sims
Fournier
Rose
Burks
Thaj

I'm leaning towards S&T Mitch for Brunson after we draft a Center with our pick (Duren, Kessler, Mark Williams). Keep Sims as the backup 5 but we can also bring back Taj, hope Noel comes back healthy (Haha!) or sign a veteran Center with the MLE (Looney, Favors, Lopez) to add depth.

McBride has shown zero signs of being a starting level PG. He can eventually pair nicely with IQ off the bench. We need a starting caliber Pg.

Completely agree. Brunson is a difference maker.

He’s shown an ability to be a starting caliber defender from the PG slot. If the offense starts with Barrett, what else do you need than a 3&D player who can pass? Other than a little bit of jitters, I don’t see anything that makes me believe he cannot be a starting caliber defender that grows into the rest of the role.

I'm in a different boat. McBride and IQ are a couple more years away from really being productive at their current positions as starters but I'm not shutting down that door. I'm hopeful IQ starts next year.

Before he seemed to streaky and didn't do enough besides the shooting...

Where do you see IQ starting ? I ask because I was pushing to see him start at PG this season and I thought I remember you being adamant he wasn’t a PG. I was sort of convinced he wasn’t a PG either but still wanted to see it for a real sample size. I still think he’s ideal at 6th man but I wouldn’t rule it out in the future.

Starting at PG. I was never in the "IQ is not a PG" choir. I have been in the "IQ is not ready to start this year at PG" stance

Ok makes perfect sense. I loved his role with rose off the bench last year. Probably because we were winning. I guess we will see.

I dont take it as a strict either/or. It's obvious the Knicks' biggest hole in the starting lineup is at PG. If a solid upgrade is out there, you go for it. If it's not, IQ can be a good plugin, he has a ton of room to grow.

In the lottery, draft the highest talent.

The Knicks are 2 or so years from being a deep playoff team. You don't need to solve the PG problem in one offseason.

It took Phoenix 5 years to get their PG to put next to Booker. These things don't have to take place over night.
