Yes the season was less than we had hoped.
But honestly for the first time in a long time which feels like forever, the team is well positioned and the roster is basically a good one. All the youth can play, in MY opinion they all stick on an NBA roster for meaningful minutes.
Aside from Kemba, there are no dead contracts or overpaid players, and Kemba's is small and expiring. No albatrosses. No Joakim, Amare, Penny Hardaway, Steve Francis, Jerome James, Glen Rice, Antonio McDyess, Eddy Curry, etc (the list is endless) multi year disasters. I believe Rose and Noel will be back and contribute and are plus players on short contracts away.
Even Randle has value in spite of this year's regression. It's basically the *opposite* of the Isiah years of multiple shitty contracts (all of them?)
And the team has all it's own picks going forward, plus others as a bonus. So many, they'll have to trade some to consolidate. I think the future is bright, or at least has potential to be. It's not a championship squad, but it's not hopeless like so many years in the past either.

I don't think you are being overly optimistic, everything you said sounds right. So the question becomes how do we move forward? I am not even talking about getting a PG or retaining Mitch. I mean the general team direction. So far it has been amass assets while trying to win with vets at any cost. So kind of rebuild but staying competitive. It's the most difficult approach but it seems to have worked last year. This year not so much. So we either stay the course or change our approach altogether (get rid of vets and play the youth 100%) I would rather do the youth movement.

A little while back, pretty much at the lowest point of the season, I started a similar thread, stating in spite of...we had some young players making steady progress, a few veterans with ability and value, and our draft picks plus going forward. And a front office which at the least seems competent. Very unlike the scenario 3 years ago.

That thread got little traffic and ended up with the trade Randle/fire Thibs stuff. Good luck with this one!

Everything Panos said is true. We are in a solid position. The big questions are what are the next moves. Is Quickley a legit starting PG? Do we need to trade Randle or Toppin? Can we resign Mitch to a fair salary with a hometown discount? Who do we draft? What is the plan for Reddish? Do we simply try to run it back after trading away Kemba or do we try to sign a free agent like Brunson? The long term future of this team will greatly depend on the decisions Rose makes in the next 12 months.

I actually agree with this. Overall the FO has us still in a good position. A lot of our contracts are now in their final year unless we pick up the team option. The 2 big contracts we have past this season are not nearly as bad as others would make it seem. I am not a Randle fan but his contract is not an albatross if we have to keep him. EF contract is about market value for a 3pt shooter of his abilities. We have a lot of good no drama young players with great work ethics. We just need a dependable superstar/all star and for our youth to continue to develop and we are good to go for the future.

This is my take as well.

I think the Knicks are in the last year of the Brooklyn era just before Durant and Kyrie hit town.

IMHO they will hit .500 next year (give or take a debilitating injury to key player).

Feels like they are poised to have enough for a massive trade after a fast start. Hopefully Utah sucks this playoffs.

Knicks are a healthy organization it seems with good young players and a lot of assets. The front office and coaching staff are good. Just need some luck and to get over the hump. We are positioned as good as we can be.

We're just one Lillard trade from contention! Randle as second and RJ as third banana (or vice versa) and the Knicks are a legit contender.

Oh , yeas! One Lillard trade that sends away Obi and IQ plus a few picks. Lillard's becomes the third installation of Walker/Rose and Randle demands a trade ( like he should). Are you worried about his abdominal surgery? I don't see that as a career threatening injury. He would have played this year if the Blazers were in contention.

I am more worried about him not being able to get his team over the hump when he was in his prime. Oh and not being in his prime at this point of time. Oh yes, I remember that. A 26 year old uninjured prime Melo for a pile of league flotsam and draft picks, some of which actually flowed back up the Denver toilet to us is exactly the same reference point as a 32 year old Damian Lillard needing abdominal surgery.
