The performance of the FO during last year's offseason was so underwhelming. With their cap space spent and holes needed to be patched, can the knicks fans finally see a good amount of wheeling and dealing to retool the roster?
The yearly PG problem is still there. This year there are a number of direction this team can go. Hand the keys to IQ, bring in Rokas, sign Brunson, trade for Sexton or Brognan.
Can this be the year the FO brings in a superstar? Mitchell might request a trade, Lavin is open to exploring free agency.
Mitch might walk in free agency, who will anchor the defense? Claxton, Bamba? Is Ayton even possible?
Can the FO find a way to bring in 2-3 key players(depends if Mitch walks) during the offseason. So many questions, i hope everyone wont be disappointed with how things will unfold.
I don't think we need a "facelift" -- just obviously need a starting pg. We already have a good young core of homegrown players.
Pay Mitch, try to trade Randle somewhere, draft Kennedy Chandler at 11 and trade for a starting pg possibly Dinwiddie or Brogdon.
Indeed -- after the growing pains of recovering from trading away picks and young players and/or giving cap killing contracts for big name vets who at best disappoint (Melo) or at worst just plain steal the money (Curry, Bargs, Noah, etc.) -- after actually having some decent drafts and having some solid young players as perhaps a core -- after showing something like intelligence in cap management, scouting, organization....
Let's tear it down! Let's see - IQ, Obi, maybe even Rj, plus picks for whom? Westbrook! Beal! Dame! Mitchell! Or how about Kyrie?
Or we can go back to Randle plus the Dallas pick for Brunson or the all star of your choice. Ai yi yi....
First time I can remember we have a roster this deep. Not a great roster mind you, but deep.
Prime for a trade to consolidate. Need not be one that makes us contenders on paper in one fell swoop.
I am very much wanting to see what our kids can do but at the same time understand the roster as it is now and with picks also we have many options.
off the table is RJ in any trade. 3 years in I want to see how this 21 year old kid does in a knick uniform not playing for Salt Lake city. Is that logical? No. Its a fan rooting for his guys. All of them. I rooting for Randle to be come back strong.
Im also Rooting for Obi to be a star. Can both happen? Puch if I know. Im not the guy making decisions.
When i said facelift, i meant undoing the moves last offseason that took out the focus on defense. I dont mind keeping evan as long as he comes off the bench. I hope the knicks can move on from Noel, burks and Walker which they already did. I sure want to keep Mitch. If somehow we can trade Randle for Mitchell or Lavin. Find a way to finally have a starting PG then let this young team grow. Can this plan be executed?
If we going to make moves this offseason, Unload Noel, Rose and maybe Burks. Give those minutes to the young nucleus on this roster.
Time to give the key to Quickley as the starting pg. More than likely its looking like Randle will be our starting PF but Fournier should not be starting so if you can unload him too that will give Reddish and Grimes some time at the wing position. Try to re-sign MitchRob but to a 3 yr deal. If his agent dont like it than GOOD BYE! Its time for Knicks to put a regular formidable lineup on the floor so they can gel and built some team chemistry. Thats one way you can create a identity. If you can have a starting lineup of Quickley, RJ, MitchRoB,Randle and Reddish or Grimes, this team will compete. If you can obtain picks and 2 players added to the rotation with expiring contracts for Randle then you can insert Toppin as your starting Pf. With more future picks in line, you have leverage to make any type of moves that will improve this roster a whole lot better.. You can never relinguish your flexibilty. You dont want to be handcuffed of future moves or trades..
what can we get with Obi, our first rounder and the Dallas future first* and fillers?
I think about what is the most attractive package we can make?
Can we move up, perhaps into a 4 or 5 position with that? And is there a player there that can be a difference maker?
Is there a trade out there that gets us a solid PG?
Outside of maybe IQ, I don't know that we have any untouchables.
We need to find the small moves that help unlock a lot of potential from other players.
I’m hoping to just add the best PG possible and running it back. Or moving on from Randle while adding a PG and allowing Toppin the opportunity to excel. We will see what happens.

IMO you are already setting yourself up for being underwhelmed.
PG is a problem today for the Knicks. Not every problem needs to be solved ASAP. They can trade, draft or sign one with the MLE. You aren't drafting or signing a starting level PG to the MLE, so that leaves you with a trade.
Best adjust your hopes on the PG front.
The trae Jones rumors have starter, maybe just sign him away from Memphis and let IQ and Jones slug it out for the starting PG spot.
Is there a trade involving Randle to move up to the top 4 of the draft? If they can secure the top 4, Ivey might be there, no need to sign Jones.
Im very intrigued by Sharpe, what trade can they make to move up from 11th to a spot where sharpe is available? The FO should already have a plan for the starting Center if Mitch walks, Thibs heavily relies on his center for rim protection and defensive anchor.
The knicks might still have the same problems even if the get the long term starting PG next year if there is now a big hole in the middle.

This is what is misleading by every article on Jones. He makes $7.5M and showed incredibly well in Ja's absence, i.e. he will demand more than the MLE which is around $10M and the only tool the Knicks have to sign him outright (and they realistically have less than the full MLE if they want to sign Jericho to a non 2-way contract.
Jones is at the end of a 3 year deal, meaning Memphis has his Full Bird Rights.
In what fantasy land is Jones going anywhere other than Memphis unless it's a massive sign and trade?

Agree. Tyus Jones is Knick homer fan fiction like the Randle for Brunson sign and trade

Martin - You are usually right when you write these things. Maybe you know something I don't. Jericho shouldn't have anything to do with the MLE. His Two Way RFA gets him another two way contract if the Knicks wish. Its a little unfair to him. The Knicks could go ahead and use any of their other exceptions on him also. I could see them offering a 2 year contract using the Biannual or the Veteran minimum. The only question is whether valuation would require them to go above this amount to get a longer term contract. Why are you saying anything for Jericho comes out of the MLE? Is there another exception?

Oh, you might be right on this, I think I have just read about using MLE on converting his contract. Could be that you could use the other exceptions.
Larger point still holds: no way the Knicks "solve" the PG problem with the MLE.
I know the last time a superstar demanded a trade to the knicks, the whole team was left bare. If by some miracle Mitchell plays hardball and asks to be traded to the knicks, can anyone see a trade where the knicks will still have RJ, iQ, obi, grimes and cam on the roster with Mitchell?
Can Randle, evan, burks and 4 1st round, 2-4 2nd rounders mostly from next years draft. Can that work? This knicks team will be young, maybe they wont be needing 4 1st rounders for a while.
Im really hoping come opening night this team will hace a feel of last year's team rather that of this year's disappointment.

Knowing Ainge's past dealings, I'd say he'd stand pat and demand IQ in any package at the bare minimum.
I think there is a decent chance IQ is the starter next year. I just don’t think this FO regime is the type to say it until after FA. Brunson and Tyus are both older than IQ and neither was as good a player as IQ is at their age. The real question is should he be the starter this year or do they want to frame a flyer on another stop gap. It also might be worth the money to bring in a vet for IQ to learn from during practice. He actually got a few moves from Kemba and that makes the time he was here worth it in the grand scheme of things.

Lets not forget Drose has been a vet presence for him and starmaker Johnny Byrant his coach. I can’t tell you what they think of his potential as a starter or micowave off the bench for a 2nd unit. Can Brunson play with IQ?

Not really, both would be small for their position, and the they have been forcing IQ to become a pg is they have concerns he is too short to be a sg. Him being a microwave scorer off the bench is you can be a short bench sg in the league and kept in/out depending on the matchup.
