Knicks · Free Agency Target: Victor Oladipo (page 1)

I'm not sure if signing him would be a Sprewell or Jerome James situation. He looked great for the Heat during the Celtics series and ended up playing the entire 4th quarter of game 7. Scott Perry in 2020 wanted to trade for him. He will be entering his 9th season. He's always been a good defender. In terms of the Knicks options, he won't require trade assets like Brogdon, will be cheaper than Brunson, and has more experience than IQ.

Miami shyed away from going deep into the luxury tax with the Heatles. With Butler and Lowry and more affordable options like Max Strus, I'm not sure the Heat would want to pay him the full non taxpayer MLE of 10.5 million. He's a guy I think would be worth a swing for.

Knicks always pay more for the always hurt player. What position does he play? Over grimes for 38 games for 10-12mm? Why not fill in like the warriors cheaply. Porter payton etc for cheap and not injured. Or simply let our guys develop. Go dump Fournier for beans if u want olapido.

franco12 @ 6/10/2022 1:20 PM
is he getting an MLE or vet min?

Doesn't really help us.

gradyandrew @ 6/10/2022 7:09 PM
I think he could be in the starting lineup:
Oladipo/ Rose/ 1st round pick
Fournier/ IQ/ Grimes
Barrett/ Burks/ Reddish
Randle/ Toppin/ Gibson
Robinson/ Noel/ Sims

I’m just trying to be open minded. Sounds good in general but in reality olapido and rose is sure fire disaster over 82 games

My suggestion
Iq starting pg. yes just go with it
D rose to back him up
Draft jalen Williams At 11– ready to play now

I like Oladipo and thought he looked good with Miami during these playoffs. He definitely isn't the same player he was before the injury but I would welcome him if the Knicks move away from either Burks or Fournier this offseason.

With that said, If I'm Oladipo, I wouldn't leave Miami if I can help it. If his goal is to win a championship, I think he is in good spot with a coach who utilize him properly and, possibly, extend his career.

I’m not sure anyone would be hated
But you’d be betting two years in a row on older Pgs w issues

franco12 @ 6/10/2022 10:53 PM
if we're going for an older veteran, let's at least get a real PG- can we sign someone like Goran Dragic- so that they can mentor players like IQ & McBride?

The Knicks would have nobody to blame but themselves or the front office. He’s a nice role player at best. He would take away minutes from players that need to play while not actually adding wins. And I like Victor. As I said before though. You build from the top-down. Meaning before a PG decision we have to make a decision on Randle. I don’t care about his rebounding and point totals. He had a terrible year yet if he’s on the team next season he’s going to be the top guy whether we or RJ or anyone likes it or not.

If only he had even a 25% higher IQ, we would be in a good position.

I don't mean to sound so blunt but...

Why would the Knicks do this? Especially after that go-around with Kemba?

How does this help the team?

Why would Oladipo think this is a good situation for him?

If we are interested in an injury-rehabbing older veteran we should go for Rubio because he could at least promote ball movement, teach the younger players selfless basketball and not be trying to re-establish himself for one more payday. Oladipo at his prime didn't really move the needle so this is an easy pass for me.

Appreciate the honesty!
I think the Knicks will be looking for an upgrade at the point. Brunson appears out of range without working out a sign and trade, costing the Knicks players. The idea here is using the MLE to take a swing at a talented player without giving up assets. I think Oladipo's injury was different, not chronic like Kemba. Adding him to the Knicks could be key to getting a top defense again. He was one of the better point of attack defenders when healthy.
Oladipo does it because of ties to Scott Perry and the opportunity to rebuild his brand in New York.

Oladipo is not a PG, he is a SG.

The last 4 years, these are the total games he has played for the regular season: 36, 19, 33, 8 (plus the playoffs).

His market is the vet min.

He is not a starter.

We have IQ/Rose at PG. With McBride in the wings.

Yeah, agree.

In 2017, Oladipo looked like he had the makings of a superstar. But that was half a decade ago! He has missed a lot of games and has been hobbled when healthy enough to play. Too often he’s a no-way player.

All true. He missed all but 8 regular season games for number 1 seed Miami but still played the entire 4th quarter of game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals. It takes players a long time to recover from ACLs but it looks like he still has a lot of value.

SergioNYK @ 6/12/2022 10:02 AM
I really don't want another vet stealing minutes from Grimes, Reddish and the 11th pick.
Philc1 @ 6/12/2022 10:19 PM
Hasn’t been the same since the serious leg injury. Will be overpriced. We are already way too overcrowded at the wing positions. Pass.

What is the expected price for him? What Can Miami pay him. Do they want him back? Does he have a loyalty and a hand shake deal with them? They took a chnace with him and he has had along road back from a hard injury.

My view is simply if we start wheeling and dealing a guy like this who might not get scooped up right away might find some minutes with us. How that happens is a long string of dominoes that falls.

gradyandrew @ 6/13/2022 10:08 AM
"It feels good to be able to play the game I love," Oladipo said after a practice last week. "You go through stuff in life, and you have to battle. I've gone through this twice, so I know how to prep mentally. But each time is new, and those challenges arise, and you have to adapt. It is a whirlwind of emotions. As a competitor, you want to play a certain way but it's about winning the small battles and I won that today. I am just thankful to keep building."

Oladipo initially ruptured his quad tendon in January of 2019 while playing for the Pacers, and since then has played just 52 games in two-plus seasons. He was also forced to undergo a second surgery on the quad last year because the initial procedure didn't fully fix the problem.

"I repaired the quad tendon and did it a little differently than [he had] it done before," Oladipo's surgeon Dr. Jonathan Glashow said last May. "The quad wasn't really hooked up. It was torn, and I reattached it. I was amazed he was playing with what he had."

Both Oladipo and the Heat are hopeful that he'll now be fully healthy and able to return to something resembling his pre-injury form. He's been taking part in workouts with teammates in recent weeks, and Heat veteran Udonis Haslem told the media that Oladipo is "definitely better" than he was last year. It remains to be seen, however, how that will translate to games after such a long layoff. But if Oladipo is able to be a consistent contributor for the Heat, it'll give them another offensive weapon just in time for the playoffs.

He scored 40 last game of the season and then 23 twice in the playoffs. He averaged 24 minutes a game and played in every one except the first two. I don't feel like his injuries were like Kemba's is a chronic problem. I just feel like a defensive minded point guard is something the Knicks are missing.

Knicks need to take some swings.

Miami may very well want to keep him. They are about 15 million below the luxury tax so they can afford to keep him.

+1
That's what struck me immediately. Why move IQ to SG behind Fournier? He looked as good if not better at the PG position at the end of the season than anyone we had.
If Oladipo is that good defensively, I'm all for sliding him in immediately behind Fournier at the 2. Fournier builds up leads with that three, and then Oladipo can come in and hold the opponent in check.

And Burks is suddenly a backup SF? In the past decade, he's played about one full season as a SF.
