Knicks · Let’s Rate the Knicks’ Draft (page 1)

TheGame @ 6/24/2022 7:04 AM
So we entered the draft with the number 11 and 42 pick, and we ended up with:

2025 first round pick from Milwaukee (protected 1-4)
2023 first round pick via Detroit (protected 1-18 until 2024, protected 1-13 in 2025, protected 1-11 in 2026, protected 1-9 in 2027)
2023 first round pick via Washington (protected 1-14 in 2023, protected 1-12 in 2024, protected 1-10 in 2025, protected 1-8 in 2026)
2023 first round pick via Denver (protected 1-14 until 2025)
((Based on reporting from Jack Maloney of CBS Sports))

We also got rid of Kemba Walker’s contract

And we got Trevor Keels, SF, Duke at 42

Also, the Knicks appear to have given up:

2023 second round pick via New York
2023 second round pick via Utah
2023 second round pick (most favorable pick between Dallas and Miami)
2024 second round pick via New York

Since I think we are still owed a 23 1st round pick from Dallas, we will definitely be players in the draft next year. I think the Denver pick will probably convey, so we should have three picks in next year’s 1st round but those picks will all probably be in the 14-25 pick range.

Keels looks like a guy bound for a permanent spot in the G league unless he develops like a Marcus Smart. He is a solid defender though, so who knows.

All in all, I think we should have simply drafted someone at 11. AJ Griffin seemed like a decent prospect to gamble on.

I grade us a B for Buttcheeks.

With all of those protections…. F.
Nalod @ 6/24/2022 8:09 AM
Incomplete. Lets see what the roster looks like after July.
None our yoot was moved. That says something.

I would like to point out that we signed Kemba at 9 mil per. he was bought out. e could have paid the minimum and Kemba gets the same

This is worse than last year. These guys think they're hot shit

Chandler @ 6/24/2022 8:25 AM
I'm in the incomplete camp and it may take longer than July to decide

i wanted a player like everyone else. Slot 11 and in that area has yielded some real stars in the past; that said, there are years where 11 and after yields a long line of mediocrity and JAGs and "who was that"-types

Given the FO drafting, which i tend to like, i'm hoping that they punted on this draft because they saw it as the latter

Allanfan20 @ 6/24/2022 8:32 AM
It’s really simple for me now. If we get Brunson then Rose did what he intended. Now we need a winning season and playoff advancement. If not Rose should be fired the day after the season ends. If we don’t even get Brunson then Rose should be fired the day he re-signs with Dallas.
ESOMKnicks @ 6/24/2022 8:41 AM
If we get a non-flukey and reasonably young all-star in the next two weeks, without giving up Randle, RJ or Mitch - I will give it a B+.
Anything else, including a signing of Brunson, gets an F from me. I certainly do not relish the prospects of watching the team wallow on the edge of lottery and first round playoff exits for the next 3 years. Which is where capping ourselves out on Brunson will land us.

Yeah, the whole idea of signing Kemba was that it was low risk, not that they'd have to attach picks to jettison him.

Honest answer is “Incomplete”. Emotionally, it’s an F. As a fan, watching mediocrity, I was hopeful that we would have an addition to our stable. A meaningful change in the SL. Next opportunity to really improve isn’t until August 2 this year. So, we are looking at a little over a month of having nothing to chew on. Not enough cap space to really make a splash. Too many conditions on the assets acquired to feel like we improved draft position over what we actually gave up. (e.g. is an unconditional Knicks 2023 and 2024 2nd higher value than conditional Detroit and Washington 1sts?). I think this office overvalued those conditions. Not sure we have improved until they finish this offseason. If they can use the trade exception to remain over the cap when bringing in their presumptive starting PG, we might have a special offseason.

a lotto pick now is not worth protected picks in the future. if we are hoarding draft picks, why didn't we just keep Kemba, assume someone else's bad deal at the deadline, and acquire a pick for cleaning up their cap ($9 million expiring has some value)? I think it is an F because I see an absence of strategy

I thought he was also traded away.

Four second rounders to get off Kemba! Do they need to attach a first to get off Noel? I've cooled off a bit, but what's the plan. They were all over the place yesterday. The vision was murky.
TPercy @ 6/24/2022 10:30 AM
My issue is that we trade a pick and 4 2nds to dump salary. Stupid organization.
TPercy @ 6/24/2022 10:36 AM
Like my big issue is trading that Denver pick.
NYKBocker @ 6/24/2022 10:36 AM

Same. Let's see what we do with the money once Brunson turns us down.

NardDogNation @ 6/24/2022 10:41 AM
I don't mind the draft. I assume that they felt they already had better options than what was available at 11 and beyond. They essentially turned one pick into four, which will help down the road to facilitate trades— either in the draft or in the never-ending quest for a star. When you consider what the Thunder got for trading the 16th pick last draft, in a stronger draft, this feels like an above-market return by comparison.

As for giving Kemba $8 million/yr, I'd guess that the Knicks had a wink-wink deal with OKC in place: buy-out Walker and we'd help in offsetting some of the cost. It made no sense for the Thunder to do so otherwise, especially when you consider that they still wouldn't have had enough money to meet the salary-cap floor.

Draft Grade: B-

God-willing. Signing Brunson to big money would be an incredibly bone-headed decision...sort of like the bone-headed decision to give big money to a dude like Evan Fournier.

KnickDanger @ 6/24/2022 10:48 AM
Waaaaaah.
Knixkik @ 6/24/2022 10:53 AM
Incomplete. I will rate after the free agency rush.
