Knicks · Knicks post draft salary situation (page 1)

It's not too bad. Eyes of the beholder how good or bad a position the Knicks are in.

(note: you can release and re-sign Taj to same contract if you want, and the Knicks would)

Julius Randle 23,760,000
Founier 18,000,000
Derrick Rose 14,500,000
RJ Barrett 10,900,000
Alec Burks 10,000,000
Nerlens Noel 9,230,000
Cam Reddish 5,950,000
Obi Toppin 5,400,000
Taj Gibson 5,100,000 (not guaranteed)
IQ 2,300,000
Grimes 2,300,000
Mitchell 1,700,000 (hold)
McBride 1,600,000
Sims
------------------------------------------------
Total 110,740,000

Total current cap: ~$111M
2022 salary cap: $122M

Cap space: ~ $11M
No Taj space: $16M

TPEs: $9M Kemba, $1.7 Knox

Knicks are 1 Burks trade from having ~$25M in cap space.

Knicks are 1 Fournier trade from having ~$35M in cap space.

Let's recall how often Knicks have shopped Noel and Burks over last year; they KNOW what it'll take to move those guys if necessary.

Boston has an exactly Fournier sized $17M TPE. Mavs have a $10M TPE. https://www.sportsbusinessclassroom.com/...

Just wanted to point out that because the Knicks are expected to operate as a cap space team, the only exceptions available to them are the room exception (worth ~$5.1Mn) and the vet minimum exception. They would have to renounce the traded player exceptions.

Ah, forgot, thanks.

Correct, but as I stated, the threat of being able to sign outright is often enough to force a sign and trade using the TPE or other players. So, a Burks/Noel trade to Dallas for instance should be on the table if the Knicks desire. Not sure if it is better for us to make that move or just sign the guy outright knowing we have their draft pick.

Remember there is also the stretch provision if we struggle to find a salary dump trade. Not ideal, but an emergency option if needed.

That's what's getting me nervous about this off season - treating Brunson like an emergency.

Scarier than that... what's our backup plan? I'd feel better about keeping the course. If you can dump vets and you strike out, fine. Seeing word about trading Cam for space now?

Don't be nervous. The Knicks sit at $16M in cap space. IF Brunson tells you he wants to come to Knicks, his ask will mostly likely be in the $20-25M range. Knicks are either a Cam or Burks trade away from being in that range.

In addition to the teams that have cap space, there are additional teams that have TPE's that want to get better, ie Boston, Brooklyn, Dallas (LOL), Clippers, Portland.

In addition to those teams, there are a bunch of other teams who have players that don't have full guarantees for that player; for instance, POR has Eric Bledsoe on a $19M contract where only $4M is guaranteed.

It will cost them but the Knicks have options still.

We have the perfect amount of space for Dejuante Murray Trade the spurs Rokas, all those extra first and get it done.
TPercy @ 6/25/2022 2:56 PM
IQ
Burks
Barrett
Randle
Robinson

Rose
Grimes
Fournier
Toppin
Noel

Reddish

trade 1 of Burks or Fournier to Boston and boom we got space.

BRIGGS @ 6/25/2022 3:17 PM
I think they may need 25 for brunson min and prob 15-16 for mitch
TPercy @ 6/25/2022 3:22 PM
Brunson
Grimes
Barrett
Randle
Robinson

Improvements from Randle Barrett makes this a competitive 6-8 seed? Draft capital gives this team upside to landing that #1 guy.

Cam seems gone regardless, guess that was always the intent- all the podcasts talk as if they know he's gone, plus there's next to no mention of him on knocks official social media.

Back up plan seems to be trade for Brogdon

CTKnicksfan @ 6/25/2022 3:28 PM
Waiving Noel via the stretch provision frees up an additional 6.16 mil in space, added to the 16.3 and you have around 22.46 as a starting salary to offer Brunson. With the usual non-bird rights 5% raises:

Year 1: 22.46
Year 2: 23.58
Year 3: 24.76
Year 4: 25.99

Total: 96.79

That's within the ballpark of the rumored offer 4/100. It's a better option IMO then spending additional draft capital to dump Noel or Burks, or giving away Cam for nothing who we gave up a 1st for last year.

The dead money (3.1m/yr) is not particularly
onerous. With the expected Mitch extension, probable RJ extension + the normal salary raises, Knicks will be operating as an over the cap team anyway for the duration of the Randle/Brunson contracts.

Trading Burks into Boston's TPE makes some sense, he could be useful for them.

I'd prefer this option. Also I feel like Burks should be worth more. He's still a useful player who I'd like..

Can't trade away the guy you spent a 1st rd pick to get for just cap space. I'd want more value than that. I'm down to let him play, but if we trade I want more than just cap relief...

MS @ 6/25/2022 3:45 PM
Honestly taking into consideration that they did move a first for Reddish and didn’t play him caps off one of the worst offseason of all time.

You win one playoff game and overpay four role players and lock in Randle?

ESOMKnicks @ 6/25/2022 4:03 PM
Geez, 12 years ago we have been trying to figure out how to squeeze out enough cap space to get LeBron and become a contender. Today we just as desperately try to squeeze into getting Brunson and become a first-round playoff team.

A decade of unmitigated progress!!!

If Dejuante Murray is really available I want the Knicks all over that… forget Brunson

Murray
Grimes
RJ
Randle
Mitch

Sixth man
Rose

Bench
IQ
Fournier
Reddish
Obi
Sims

That’s a pretty interesting team

I'd do Murray for Barett and a 1st straight up.

How about Randle and 2 or 3 of those recently acquired/complicated 1st rounders for D.Murray and Zach Collins? We'd be set at PG with IQ as his backup. Murray still has growth/star potential and plays top notch defense. Brunson is a fine player but Murray could be a game changer for us.
