"The Mavericks are willing to give him a five-year deal in the ballpark of the four-year, $85 million deal Raptors guard Fred VanVleet signed in 2020, ESPN reported. Brunson declined a four-year, $55.5 million contract from Dallas after the trade deadline."

Just to put it into perspective, a 4/110 contract for Jalen Brunson would make him the 39th highest paid player in the NBA next season
http://www.espn.com/nba/salaries

At 27.5m, he would be 39th, right ahead of Al Horford and right behind Jayson Tatum

If you think Brunson is a top 40 player in the NBA it's a fair contract. I don't have a list of my top 40 players but I can't imagine Brunson isn't on it or at least close to it. Don't really get the "what an overpay" comments

this is from reddit and I think its spot on perspective.

Its good value. He's 26. Its a great use of cap space. Hard working hard playing floor general who's high EFF% shooter.

Now we just need Detroit to have a good year so we get their pick in 2023

VanVleet was a situation where the Raptors were bidding against themselves and their perception of fair market value. And he wanted to stay.

Brunson is a scenario where we’re trying to convince him to leave and ward off other teams from competing with us. We also need to pay him more than Dallas with that whole Texas (low/no) tax thing.

So yeah we have to bid more. I’m not saying it’s ideal, but we have to sweeten the deal.

No idea of the veracity of this sentence, Jake Fischer reporting:

Toronto and Fred VanVleet appear headed towards a contract extension that could approach four years and over $110 million, sources told B/R.
