Knicks · bench is likely what's going to get the wins and that's great (page 1)

fishmike @ 9/29/2022 12:38 PM
Brunson/Fournier/RJ/Randle/Mitch isnt bad. Lots of size and finally a floor general.

Their job is not get blown out in the first and third and dont cough up the lead the bench gives you.

Rose/IQ/Grimes/Obi/Hart

Their job is for 20 minutes or so a night out play the other team's bench and I love that. This is going to be a VERY HUNGRY 2nd unit. NBA has a lot of good bench players, especically scorers, but this is really a standout group and doesnt include Cam or McBride.

foosballnick @ 9/29/2022 2:09 PM
I agree....plus would like the bench to ALL get a solid 20 mins.
Allanfan20 @ 9/29/2022 3:26 PM
I agree the bench is important but I don’t agree that they are the thing that gets us our wins… if we win.

I think that falls on the shoulders of Julius Randle and RJ Barrett. If Julius humbles up and learns to see himself as a finisher and absolutely not a main ball handler and RJ becomes more consistent, especially around the basket and at the FT line, then our offense should be pretty unstoppable and the bench will not even be playing many minutes besides at the 2 and probably 5 spot.

If those 2 things don’t happen, the bench might net a couple of wins on what will most likely be a trash season.

I am risking my basketball sanity by being extra optimistic about the season. I am putting my Julius beef aside. I think all the good things I mentioned will happen and hey, on the nights those guys are in foul trouble then the bench definitely can be killer.

Allanfan20 @ 9/29/2022 3:28 PM
Ohh… and obviously Brunson has to be a really good PG and not just a scorer. We all assume that’s the case. Please let that be the case. Pretty please?🙏🙏🙏

Agree that this will be a big plus for us. Unless of course the youngins act like youngins and experience growth pains. Think the chemistry that has developed, with second unit, will prevent any major issues though. Curious to see how Rose now fits in. Love his leadership but, won't lie, was excited to see a IQ, Grimes, Cam, Obi and Hart lineup. Which was one of the reasons I fought a bit with the JB signing. Do think that because of Rose's age and injury history we may eventually get to see that lineup.

strategically could make a lot of sense.

a lot of teams have spent a lot of money on superstars and even their starting five might have holes and especially the bench

if we play 10 and they play a full 48 min a game we will win 49 games this year precisely as i predicted!

Ira @ 9/30/2022 6:14 AM
A very good thread. I do suspect that, at some point during the season, Grimes is going to play himself into the starting lineup. But the same idea will hold with Fournier coming off the bench.
Uptown @ 9/30/2022 7:50 AM
As good as the 2nd unit was last year, they will be even better this year. The addition of Hart is going to take us to another level. The 2nd unit plays fast and does a great job of playing a full court game with Rose's ability to push and Obi's ability to lead the secondary break. Adding Hart, will open up the offense in the half court. His passing ability, especially out of the high post, will make Obi even more dangerous when he backdoor cuts, and will he be able to take the ball out of Quicks hands a little and allow him and Grimes to spot up.

The 2nd unit was the best part of last years team and I don't think that changes this year...

Grimes finished games in place of EF in a number of games for his defense. This is were it all gets started. If that happens then there is a logic that he should start also. This also improved EF’s numbers.
The notion that fans can plug and play and run with hit going forward is their prerogative.
That was a coach actually coaching, not just trying shit out.
Grimes needed to improve in certain areas and that remains to be demonstrated.

Not if but when.

Grimes finished games last year while EF sat on the bench.

There was a few times when EF finished games towards the end, but thats when his offense was clicking which means he had more defensive energy / confidence. Again, EF is the classic vet where his offense dictates his overall play. Glad to hear Thibs say the same thing (he must be reading my threads ).

EF should be the starter and Grimes should be the finisher. My question is IQ and Rose. Both used to log heavy minutes in the 4th (due to injury or game play). Now we talking about 3 guards who could possibly finish games. My guess is only 1 of those 3 will finish in the 4th, now that we have JB. Rose and IQ playing time is difficult to predict, especially if Grimes has been elevated and the addition of JB. Plus EF will be his normal sharp shooting self and (I believe his defense will improve).

SupremeCommander @ 9/30/2022 9:48 AM
i read this and get irritated that we traded for Cam Reddish. like WTF, why? a needlessly wasted pick

Thibs could put Grimes at the "wing" in combination with IQ and Rose. It's all matchup dependent. I'm hopeful Cam puts it all together and makes this decision even more difficult, but that doesn't appear likely.

SergioNYK @ 9/30/2022 10:36 AM
The depth should be a strong suit for this roster so there is no reason to play Randle the entire 1st and 3rd quarters. I don't think anyone besides RJ should be playing more then 30 mpg. Use the depth, keep the players fresh.
Knixkik @ 9/30/2022 11:28 AM
The bench is going to be great. Might be the best in the league.

Having D.Rose leadership & Brunson creativeness closing games down the stretch give Knicks the edge at being a 6th seeded team at end of season !!!
I only hope Cam Reddish step-up on his defense having a 6.8 frame to be in D.Rose dynamic bench lineup instead of Grimes.

I like being a 6th seed which means someone stepped up. Does it matter if its Grimes or Cam?
In my world let them all step up and what we can’t use trade to enrich the roster or picks for a “better tomorrow”!

Not sure what happened there. Rose/Perry trading for a player Thibs clearly wanted nothing to do with. And it doesn’t reek of Isiah either. Cam isn’t a way past his prime name with a horrific contract

Allanfan20 @ 10/5/2022 8:07 AM
Cam isn’t that good, plain and simple. At least not in the NBA obviously.

Deuce needs more minutes. He might be a better defender than Frank.

Let’s not write off Cam yet. Also the starting unit actually looked cohesive with Brunson out there. It’s crazy but this team hasn’t had a good PG who wasn’t out their prime since Marbury or maybe that first Felton run.

Cam needs to define who he is. He knows he's not going to dominate the ball, so he needs to figure out other ways to contribute. Unfortunately, he has other young players on the team who aren't going to wait for him to figure it out. Cam potentially fills a major need on the team and would seem to have a path to minutes. But, honestly, do you feel he deserves to play over McBride?

Wasn’t it a Charlotte 1st that we sent to Atlanta, then Atlanta sent to San Antonio as part of the Murray trade? What are the protections on that pick because it’s going to go top ten with the Bridges mess.

That Mavs pick keeps on giving
