The Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks engaged in advanced discussions on a trade of Deandre Ayton during the draft before talks stalled, sources tell Marc Stein of Substack.

The trade would have sent Ayton to Dallas for Tim Hardaway Jr., Richaun Holmes and JaVale McGee, but the Suns objected to the inclusion of McGee. Even though the Suns wouldn't have acquired any future first round picks, they liked turning Ayton into two rotation players in Hardaway and Holmes.

Sources tell Stein that the talks could be resumed.

Aytons value was never high. Low motor, low rebounding, low defense, low passing, low intimidation. Me first player that demands touches. Decent scorer, limited court vision, decently durable, but he doesn’t do much with his body so he avoids injury.

He has size and can score. Plays like a late lotto pick, not like a #1 pick. He’s worth a mediocre starter and a serviceable C. I think that IQ and Mitch for him is an overpay.

A gross overpay. All I think it'd take is the cheaper contracts of Mitchell Robinson and Jericho Sims. They'd get two rotation-caliber players for the price of one, while shaving +$10 million or so from the remainder of the Ayton contract. Makes sense for both teams.

New York Knicks

Offseason transactions: None

Who to watch: Josh Hart

The Knicks' acquisition of Hart before the trade deadline was for both basketball and business reasons.

The basketball part is the do-everything mentality of Hart and the impact he has on both ends of the court. Among all guards in the regular season, Hart ranked third in rebounds (behind Luka Doncic and Josh Giddey) and second in offensive rebounds (behind only Giddey). Opponents shot 41% when Hart was the contesting defender in his 25 games with the Knicks. That ranked in the top-10 among more than 100 players to contest 250 shots after Feb. 10 according to Second Spectrum tracking.

The business part is that because Hart was acquired in a trade, New York inherited his Bird rights and can exceed the cap to sign him. Hart has until June 29 to pick up or decline his $12.9 million player option. If Hart opts in and then extends, New York could use up to $10 million of the midlevel exception and still remain below the tax threshold and first apron.

What else to watch:

The rookie extensions: Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin

Available exceptions: $12.4 million midlevel, $4.5 million biannual and veteran minimum

Below the luxury tax: $8.5 million

Below the $172M first apron: $11 million

Below the $182.5M second apron: $21.4 million

Key dates:

June 29: The last date for Josh Hart to opt in to his $12.9 million contract

June 29: The last date to exercise the $1.8 million Miles McBride team option

July 16: The Jericho Sims $600K in protection increases to $1.2 million

Aug.16: The Sims $1.9 million contract becomes guaranteed

Oct. 23: The last day to extend the contracts of Immanuel Quickley and Julius Randle

Oct. 31: The deadline to exercise the fourth-year team option for Quentin Grimes

A three-year, $60M extension.

Do Bulls get a DPE for Lonzo? That with the MLE give them some flexibility.

Bringing home Rose seems like the gimme at this point with who's available and their glaring need. If they can shore up PF, they're not really a bad team on paper, despite the disappointing year. Absolutely a treadmill team, but no skin off my neck!

Rose/Beverly
Lavine/White
DeRozan/Caruso
Williams/?
Vuc/Drummond

#8 Miami giving a lot of teams hope!

Reddish not getting a qualified offer and will be unrestricted FA.
I suppose more politics and favoritism over basketball?
Recently he boasted in Portland they let him "relax and just shoot the ball".
Then they sat him.
Now they made him gone.
3 teams in 4 years. Maybe they told him to relax because they gave up?
I expect a team to pick him up and he is not in the "Kevin Knox zone". 2 mil per, one year deal. Still might pan out but its not Thibs that hurt him.
He might have the body, the athletic agility, and can shoot. But its not clicking.
Needs that "Heat Culture".

I read Christian Wood might to to Miami. Kid is talented, but his coaches hate him?

Cam to heat, Suns, Lakers likely.

Spurs would Ben Simmons the guy

If this is true then those DiVincenzo rumors are making a lot more sense. I love Quick but he is always really bad to start the season and is unplayable in the playoffs. I can't go 100mil on that until he proves he is worth it. He might need to go in a deal for a bigger fish.

One year of playoffs and he indicted for his career?
Slow starts? In part to adapt from surge in implementing new skills?
Your not entirely wrong though. Over paying is always a risk. I like IQ, and would hate to lose him for nothing, but what is his market value? Trade market?
The FVV thing, two years at an inflated number works for a team really in need for his leadership. IQ could get a front ended deal if we let him get restricted.
He wants 100mil for 4 years? Not awful, but he is not better than Brunson so where do we play him starter minutes and pay him starter salary?

You can't be overpaying guys any more. This new CBA is going to rain in on those overpayed players when things settle in. Brunson will be coming up for a new contract sooner than people think. Once you hit that second apron if you are not a contender you are in major trouble. Paying 25mil per for a guy who is unplayable when the games actually count is not smart. Until Quick proves otherwise he is in Randle territory once the playoffs starts.

For me there is no reality where IQ gets $100M over 4 years.

You don't pay IQ the same numbers as Brunson/RJ/Randle got. Everyone knows this and so does the Knicks FO. Brunson got a 4year $104M contract. Randle got 4years at $117M. RJ 4 years $107M.

FO typically offers value contract when they are in that position. I wouldn't sweat it.

Randle was injured and Heat messed up IQ.
He had a bad series. not the end of his career.
Great tweet.

But, its pretty obvious we are not true contenders. We hit our head on our ceiling last season vs a very good Heat team.
Don't need Tweets to tell me that.
The key is can Randle be better in a playoff and if not who can be and is that player available at what price. So easy right?

Hopefully you are right. I will keep faith in the FO because they have done a good job so far.
