Knicks · Team is still heavily dependent on health of Drose (page 1)

Knixkik @ 10/13/2022 9:28 AM
Brunson can keep the starters upright which is a difference from the 2 previous seasons, but that entire bench will need to be intact to win games against good teams. Drose, IQ, Grimes (or Fournier if Grimes eventually starts), Obi and Hart. Hartenstein improves the bench with his added playmaking and range no doubt, so a healthy bench is our best ever. But with Drose out, we will have to figure out how to navigate. Quickley will need to expand his game and take that next step, because McBride really looks just like a situational defensive player (similar to Frank) and Reddish just doesn’t offer any specialty where he can impact winning. Cam’s role is best on a rebuilding team where he can just play free and not worry about a role at all. So Knicks will need to hope Quickley can step up when Drose is out. Hoping Jokubaitis can continue to develop overseas and eventually become the Drose successor in the bench rotation. Knicks league best bench can get awfully thin if guys are always out. The goal is and will continue to be playing even with the starters and winning with the bench as long as the Knicks are lacking a single superstar on the roster.

Yeah I think we saw last night that neither IQ or Deuce have the PG skills to take back control of the game when it starts to slip. Indy sped us up and we lost all composure. You know Rose would have settled that down. Yes it’s just preseason but I’ve seen us lose games just like this before. Indy had more energy and wants to run and play with pace. They killed us in points in the paint.

I love the addition of Brunson. Rose needs to show he can stay healthy. I am just not a fan of IQ at PG. I hope we can bring Jokubaitus over towards the end of this season.

Speaking of second units, inevitably Mitch is going to get injured, so having Sims and Hart on the roster is going to be very valuable.

This is why I'd like to see Grimes get the chance to make a case to be the backup PG, post D. Rose. Whenever that is.

Grimes has been working on his playmaking skills in the offseason. He's also good enough to defend the other team's starting PG.

He’s switchable on defense, but playing him at PG on offense sort of takes away what he does best I think. That’s not to say he can’t be a playmaking wing.

See it more as adding to his repertoire. Ideally Grimes shows the ability to run the point. That combined with his defense, keeps the Knicks competitive if Brunson is hurt. It also makes it easier for Thibs not to give Brunson too many minutes.

Quick is a complicated player in my eyes. I keep calling him PG capable because I am not 100% what we saw at the end of the last season will be how Quick plays from now on. That guy I would not mind calling a PG. It is early but he is back to looking like the Quick that is best used as a secondary playmaker. So far even when he has had a good game this preseason he is not having a good game as a PG. A majority of the time when he was the primary ball handler it ended in a shot for him. I actually think Hart was a better "PG" for the bench than quick was the last game. If he can't get back to playing PG like the end of last season we will again be reliant on Rose to have a good season.
Philc1 @ 10/14/2022 7:55 AM
Not really. IQ developed into a semi-competent backup pg last season. Rose has some offensive game but he’s not a good outside shooter and he can’t guard a stop sign
wargames @ 10/14/2022 8:50 AM
They still could use him to collapse the defense. This summer all we heard was IQ got stronger to try to do the same. Indy stepped up their defense so I am not made at Quick flinching, but hopefully he adjusts and gets back to attacking the basket AND shooting difficult threes. It could be he is good in a off ball role. The Knicks wanted to pair Maxey with IQ for a reason. Those two as a backup back court would be a nightmare.

Yeah we want to avoid the same mistake with grimes. He should be a better version of what Bullock was for this team.

I would rather have Burks that Bullock. Grimes needs to be a much better offensive player than Bullock. I loved Reggie but he literally cost us that Hawks series because we had nobody who could score on Trae... they hid him on Reggie and to Young's defense he did a good job guarding the jump shooting Bullock.
GustavBahler @ 10/14/2022 4:40 PM
WTF does the veteran Burks have to do with Grimes? Absolutely nothing. Grimes has been working every summer with Penny Hardaway on his playmaking skills. He's a good coach.I want to see if it will pay dividends at the point.

Werent you guys pushing Quickley as the starting PG of the future? Knew that wasnt going to happen his rookie season. I want to see if Grimes can play backup PG. You should too. If it doesnt work, fine. At least they gave it a shot.
