Knicks · IQ's trade value ? (page 1)

Alpha1971 @ 10/15/2022 9:42 AM
I can see the team looking at trading him if a good deal is available. I can see the team bringing Rikas over next year to be Brunson's back up and the team drafting a wing or two next draft leaving IQ possibly squeezed out.
gradyandrew @ 10/15/2022 10:29 AM
I think he and Obi have got some real Lou Williams/ Tree up sit. No reason to split that up yet.
Nalod @ 10/15/2022 11:08 AM
Big year for our young'ins! Time to get paid and extend career.
Rokas gonna want money.
Rokas could be a good chip also.
technomaster @ 10/15/2022 11:17 AM
IQ's an interesting trade candidate.
When he's having a good game and brings the swagger, we swear he can Steph Curry-lite or Lou Williams. But the consistency isn't there. The Knicks seem to be trying to figure out whether they can count on him big this preseason (he's leading the Knicks in USG) and results have been mixed - his shooting has not been good so far and ideally (like RJ) needs to add in a sneaky basket around the rim.

He could be good for a veteran team needing a perimeter shooter (think about Malik Monk's role) OR for a young team that wants to take a (cheap-ish) gamble on a possible PG of the future. In either case, any team (including the Knicks) is banking that Quickley gains consistency sooner than later - AND that he gains the mentality to play a legit PG, not just a combo guard.

I can see neither of these things happening.

OR... how about we just have him as a SG, like he's meant to be? Why does everything need to be complicated?

Knixkik @ 10/15/2022 9:28 PM
I don’t see him getting moved unless it’s a necessary addition in a trade for a star. I love he and Obi together leading the bench unit for years to come. Rokas can slide into Drose role eventually.
Kemet @ 10/16/2022 1:30 AM
I see the duo Quickley & Obi Toppin having a dynamic winning midseason for a decent extension next offseason !!!
franco12 @ 10/16/2022 6:51 AM
I would be very hesitant to trade Quickley. When he is right, he is the kind of player other teams can’t stop. He can get his shot off whenever he wants, he can get into the lane with ease. And that is the kind of player you need in the play offs.
KnickDanger @ 10/16/2022 10:22 AM
Hey, since Randle is playing better we have to have threads be “trade somebody.”
Nalod @ 10/16/2022 11:23 AM
Not loving what Im seeing with IQ preseason. Obi too. The dunks are fun but Im thinking we did this with soft tanking teams.
Im not putting any labels here nor will defend this position. I want them to both play better and expect them to.

his trade value won’t be shit unless he brings more becuawe whomever wants him will have a need and will have to pay him.
Lou Wiliams whom we hope he becomes rarely got the respect for 6 teams he moved about to. His best years were age 28-33 when he got to clippers and played his role. if thats his lot, so be it.
No 2 players are alike. I like the kid. Im rooting for him and OBI!

I understand the IQ part but I think Obi is a product of how the offense is flowing. Since most of his scores are off cuts if the ball is not moving he does not score as well. The first 2 games the ball were not moving well but that was covered up by his many leak outs and his 3pt shooting in the second game. Whenever the offense looks stuck in the mud I don't think Obi will look good.

OBI looks great when the flow is there. He has to hit that open shot. I love the fast break and iHart is a big piece of that. If the offense is not moving Obi can’t be dormant if he is to become all he can be.

Why?

Because he won't get playing time that will elevate his career.
Crunch time the pace gets slow.

So we should trade a good young player with a team friendly rookie contract who helps us win games for an overpriced scrub because…?

Your daft?

Who said anything about trading OBI? I want obi to kick ass and hit those open looks! I want OBI to push Randle for playing time because both are playing really well.

I ended last season incredibly high on IQ. In the last few games of the season, I saw him orchestrating the offense, feeding Obi and disrupting the passing lanes with his long arms.

Right now, his pre-season showing left a little lacking and I feel like he dragged down that second unit a bit with his lack of passing and poor shooting. His disruption of the passing lanes is pretty much all he had going for him in those 4 pre-season games.

I don't think there is a camp battle any more. Cam may have pre-seasoned himself out of the rotation. But IQ/Grimes probably have the first 10 games of the season still to define a winner. McBride is certainly looking like he will be snatching any extra minutes that Derrick Rose sits for.

So, how does this play for his trade value?

He has this year and a 1 year team option at 4mm on his contract followed by a 6mm QO.

I'd guess his contract value is between 7.5mm and 9mm max right now if he was available on the open market. There a lot more players that can come in and use those same minutes just as effectively. Put differently, how different does our team look if you replace IQ with Malik Monk? Monk makes 9.5mm per on a two year contract.

So, this year and next year, his rookie contract carries a small gap between actual value and estimated AAV. Its a good contract for teams over the cap, but most teams could replace his skill set with the MLE or less.

In terms of rookie upside, he is still in his younger stages of his career and hasn't been able to break into the starting rotation on a team that clearly lacked a PG. Mostly because he is a gunner.

I see his highest value coming from a team like Portland where Dame is rapping about Quick. He's a gunner also and likes what he sees in IQ, for good reason, but IQ needs to work on the other facets of his game. The IQ that was pushing 10 assists at the end of last season makes 20mm per.

So, IQ has to decide whether he is a Lou Williams-type gunner that caps out at 11mm per as 6th man of the year. Or if he is a point guard that can both spread the floor and run an offense.

I think he is closer to the second but he got caught this pre-season forcing shots while trying to find his offensive flow. I think he put up quite a few bad shots forcing the issue instead of using his passing. It collapsed the second unit many many times.

I think he and Obi have a special connection and a line of IQ/Rose/Grimes/Toppin/Hart will gel a bit in the first few games if they let Hart initiate the offense in the high post while the 3 guards move off the ball. I think they gel.

Total Value? Currently late first round pick in 2023 and a couple seconds from a contending team without cap room to navigate. More likely added to another trade as a value add trade chip. If he puts together a larger sample size of the games like at the end of last year, he could raise that value tremendously. I think his value comes from passing not shooting though.

Kemet @ 10/17/2022 7:25 PM
My only problem with Quickley in the preseason games were how he forgot how to pass the ball to his teammates, especially to Obi after the assist of Obi's between the legs dunk.
I'm hoping Quickley go back to having confidence in his great passing-skills, and confidence in his new teammates in the 2nd unit lineup (Hart & Cam & Grimes).
The Knicks success were having 6th Man D.Rose leadership coming off the bench, and a co-existing Quickley speeding up the tempo feeding a slashing Obi Toppin.

Sounds about right.

I like the point about being an $11m player vs a $20m player.

Malik Monk signed for 2yr/$19.4m.
Undersized SGs are dime a dozen. Monk is paid that much because of perceived upside. And hey, it's the Kings!

Alec Burks, debatably a rather complete player who can play some legit PG at 6'5", has a 3yr/$30m deal.
