Knicks · Who is odd man out now? (page 1)

Knixkik @ 10/20/2022 9:18 AM
Grimes will be back soon, if not Friday. Reddish will have to play. That’s still 11 guys. I think Quickley and Toppin are most at risk. I always viewed Reddish as a combo forward, and a precursor to Toppin eventually being moved since he’s positionally blocked. Plus Knicks will eventually have to make extension decisions on Toppin and Quickley. Ian Begley said they probably can’t pay both. If Randle is dumped, sure, but I don’t see it. I assume the Knicks are still banking on some good players coming onto the trade market and they can consolidate that way, but with Reddish looking good that decision may come faster. I’m really hoping Cam keeps playing this way, but the rotation issues aren’t going away. I can see Quickley and Cam both eventually getting extensions due to their ability to play multiple positions, and Toppin being moved to a rebuilding team. But in the meantime it’s going to be very interesting how the bench rotation shakes out.

no reason to watch IQ jack shots and play mediocre defense while Cam/Grimes are fighting for minutes
BMart @ 10/20/2022 9:33 AM
I think Obi is most at risk. The Julius player shows the difference between them and Obi can’t create his own shot. If Cam can play fast and not be out of control, he may be able to play Obi’s role better
BMart @ 10/20/2022 9:37 AM
Meant to say the way Julius played. Obi is fast but can only run in a straight line and is dependent on someone getting him the ball. Cam has a much better Handle and can go coast to coast and finish. It will be in interesting to see how Thibs handles this group, there a lot of weapons but limited minutes to go around
Alpha1971 @ 10/20/2022 9:43 AM
The man with the ironic name of IQ. He plays with low bball IQ and if Grimes is healthy I can see Grimes and Cam getting time with Evan and RJ. Evan is an elite three or shooter, unselfish with the ball and can create his own shot. But glad to see Cam making it a conversation.
KnickDanger @ 10/20/2022 10:14 AM
This foot injury that Grimes has according to him was there before preseason. These mysterious lingering foot injuries are a biotch.

What is interesting to me is that in this young group all have shown potential and had “breakout“ games. You could even include RJ and Mitch to some extent. But among Cam, IQ, Grimes, Obi, Deuce, perhaps Sims - who’s going to take it and run with it? The cool part is how long has it been since we had a young core, even an inconsistent sometimes frustrating one?

Philc1 @ 10/20/2022 10:43 AM
Obi
Nalod @ 10/20/2022 10:55 AM
Its a long season and as thibs says injuries happen.
I think IQ is the odd man out for now:

Fornier/Grimes/IQ
Brunson/Drose/IQ
RJ/Reddish
Randle/Obi
Mitch/Hart

He might not go back to back games with Drose, and foul trouble will matter.
Grimes has to play into shape or get his in game timing down. So its fluid.
Obi is nursing something.

BRIGGS @ 10/20/2022 11:04 AM
not a bad problem to have. Injuries and slumps are part of the game.

I agree with this... he's basically the same player we drafted... he's an undersized SG that seems to be regressing at worst, or isn't evolving at best

Agreed. It really isn’t. But there’s still an issue if all are healthy. You just can’t play 11 guys.

The issue is he needs an expanded role to make a big difference. He’s a volume scorer and can’t have the impact playing 15 mins per game. We will see his impact when Rose is out, but he will have a lot of games like this when the full rotation is present. Remember his breakout came when the roster broke down a bit in the second half of the year. I still value him above Toppin simply because of his ability to play multiple positions. I wouldn’t mind paying both he and Reddish (if reddish breakout holds up) simply because IQ can come off the bench at the 1 and 2 and reddish can at the 3 and 4. Toppin is pretty clearly only a PF. Roster flexibility is just so important.

SergioNYK @ 10/20/2022 11:47 AM
I'd sit Rose and have IQ run the PG. Give Reddish the backup 3 and 2 minutes until Grimes comes back.

PF Obi
SF Reddish
C Hartenstein
SG Grimes
PG IQ

If that’s the case I’d be extra careful and give Grimes even more time off. Foot injuries are very tricky and don’t heal like other injuries

Obi can’t put the ball in the ocean from more than 3ft out. Hart looked very good yesterday I’d consider giving him some run at PF behind Randle and having he and Mitch together on the floor. Hart can shoot so it doesn’t affect spacing

Chandler @ 10/20/2022 1:43 PM
i'm not sure a given player will be out

i suspect it will be who is playing well that game and who isn't. Thibs will let the level of play dictate the minutes for a given player.

players will need to lock in and take nothing for granted if they want minutes! the way it should be frankly

Santi Aldama was the 30th pick and looks awesome. So much talent in the draft. Obi is a good player it's one game. Not worried about him. IQ is the problematic guy right now

fishmike @ 10/20/2022 2:21 PM
Obi will get in the game when Randle sits, but as we know with Thibs, that may not be much, ESPECIALLY if we are getting the Randle we got last night. Even when he was missing shots he looked great on D and moving the ball. When he and Brunson get some chemistry I expect them to be a dynamic scoring duo. When Randle hit Brunson cutting to the basket with that bounce pass I was like whoa that is there anytime you can get it

If Obi isn’t dunking he isn’t scoring

Brunson/Rose
Fournier/Grimes
Barrett/Reddish
Randle/Toppin
Robinson/Hart

I can see Toppin losing minutes also the way Reddish looked last night. The work Reddish put in is showing. Hell, Barrett might have to look over his shoulder...

Nalod @ 10/20/2022 5:15 PM
I think RJ body of work and contract gives him a bit of security. Cam has a long way to go before he supplants RJ. I'd say last night gave him a thread than rope to hang on.
One game over reactions don't include how these guys are practicing and who has been nursing injury. That Obi was a game time decision indicates he is not 100%.
Drose did not look great and IQ again might have been asked to focus on some things and he is not "quick" to adapt.
