Knicks · Who is odd man out now? (page 2)

I think RJ body of work and contract gives him a bit of security. Cam has a long way to go before he supplants RJ. I'd say last night gave him a thread than rope to hang on.
One game over reactions don't include how these guys are practicing and who has been nursing injury. That Obi was a game time decision indicates he is not 100%.
Drose did not look great and IQ again might have been asked to focus on some things and he is not "quick" to adapt.

In no way shape or form is Barrett getting downgraded in any way due to one bad shooting game. He’s a long term starter as long as he’s here. The bench is the question here.

Agreed Do think Thibs will continue to go with who is playing well at the end of games though. Hopefully RJ is not excused from that if he is not playing well. Last night was a good time to have RJ on the bench at the end. Feel if Grimes was there, that would have happened.
The problem for Cam is that it will be difficult to get minutes with IQ, Rose, Grimes and Obi ahead of him on the second unit. Not sure how he will earn the right for more. If Rose plays as badly as he played last night, he may be the piece that gets traded. Hate to say it because he is clearly respected and liked but if they want to see which young piece belongs, that may be the only way.

Cam/Grimes/IQ are all about the same age... the only thing that makes Grimes more attractive is he's under rookie contract for another 3 years but so what. Knicks need impact players and talent. Whoever is playing the best and working the hardest should get the minutes. No reason to let IQ shoot 30% for 20 games while Grimes or Cam are sitting
Knixkik @ 10/21/2022 9:36 AM
Cam makes his mark here by knocking down threes at a 40% clip and playing tough D. Wing defenders are just so valuable. All the extra creativity he has on offense is a bonus.

I think a consolation trade makes sense but it’s easier said than done. It’s basically either trading 2 for 1 and hope for a slight upgrade at a position or moving someone for a protected first round pick at best.

Just can't see Cam hitting at 40% clip. His form and shot selection not there for that.
Can see him being a solid bench player just by having more energy off the bench and creating more off the dribble with aggressive downhill finishes. He is athletic to make something happen if he does. Now if he adds some basketball IQ, 40% threes and learns how to get others involved, then you may have a starter in the NBA.

I think we have seen that whoever is playing well, plays. Cam played and it wasn't difficult for him.

Just one game - but Rose provided no spark or impact in the Memphis game - wonder if age is catching up
MaTT4281 @ 10/21/2022 10:57 AM
Thibs does not change his rotation based off of 1 game (ask Elf Payton, Kemba Walker).

Cam still going to be on the outside looking in once Grimes returns. He better make the most of this stretch to keep his foot in the door. Very glad to see some competition from him. Ev, IQ, Grimes, and even Obi all need to know he's gunning for their minutes.

Point was that if Grimes is back which five go out there on second unit to get a chance to "play well"?
I think it will be Rose, IQ, Grimes, Obi and Hart. Unless you think Thibs will run with 11?
Maybe a chance early in the season?

Barely played in preseason. I think he is still ramping up.

I think Thibs knows he has 11 guys who are part of his normal, deep rotation - McBride and Jericho and the rest on outside looking in.

Match ups. Injury. Who is playing well. Those will be determining factors.

It's not ideal but it's nothing to worry about either. DRose can take his time. So can Grimes. If IQ was in end-of-last-season PG form, DRose probably wouldn't play until he is 100%.

IMHO I think Thibs and FO give the longest leash (up to a limit) to Cam just cause of his contract situation.

Don't overthink it.

I wonder if its about keeping Rose healthy? A relatively healthy Rose for a playoff run could be a game changer. Wont get there by giving Rose too much PT, over the course of the regular season. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Obi can’t put the ball in the ocean from more than 3ft out. Hart looked very good yesterday I’d consider giving him some run at PF behind Randle and having he and Mitch together on the floor. Hart can shoot so it doesn’t affect spacing

Don't think it was Obi's fault yesterday. The second unit was off. Rose does not have same chemistry with him like IQ does. Grizzlies also got back extremely well. Liked that Obi showed some more moves going to the basket in pre season. Think he will bounce back tonight.
