lol.. we should have pulled the trigger and had DM instead of Fournier in the starting line up? I love the bench but based on the FO's ability to grab role players and make trades for guy who are good at filling roles you have to wonder how we look.
I believe the deal was essentially Obi/IQ/Grimes/Fournier with 3-4 FRPs and some additional pick swaps. So basically our whole bench and 4 years of draft choices
The Jazz shocked the NBA world by trading Donovan Mitchell to the Cavaliers in exchange for Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton (via sign-and-trade), No. 14 overall pick Ochai Agbaji, the Cavaliers’ unprotected first-round picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029, and the right to swap first-round picks with the Cavaliers in both 2026 and 2028.

The Jazz got a lot for Donovan… the value of the Knicks own picks would have made giving those picks up a lot worsr

Thanks. Yeah I was against this trade but I’ve been wrong on Mitchell 3 times. He’s just better than I personally think he is. I think Barrett might have had to go in that trade

maybe that was the hangup. Obi/IQ/Grimes/Fournier works money wise. If they wanted RJ along with a similar package it doesnt make sense

Man... That Sexton contract isn't looking good so far. Agbani hasn't gotten off the bench, so he knows where he ends up. But Lauri... He's been Dirk very 1.5 so far. If he keeps it up I'd say the Jazz did good from a player standpoint. The picks... You never know, but I'm not sure how great they'll turn out.

Can would have had to for salary purposes as well. Cam, Obi, Grimes, IQ and Fournier. The pick allocation would be similar. Since it's the Knicks, I'd think their picks would've held more value.
I thought one of the last offers included RJ. RJ, IQ, Obi, Fournier, all those picks.
Knicks on a nice little jag - so let’s obsess some more on the Mitchell (non) trade.

Lauri has looked great before the issue with him has always been health. His rookie year people were saying he was better than KP pre injury and then Lauri got injured.
Anyhow it still leads to the point that Ainge was trying to rob the Knicks. The fact he didn’t go to them with the Cavs offer to me was a sign that knew what he was trying to do to the Knicks was a robbery and he wasn’t trying to settle for less.
Donovan is a top talent but the Knicks would have been capped with him. Ainge wanted 4-6 picks, swaps, and young players. Ainge was being unreasonable.
Ainge job is to extract maximum value for a trade. I thought Clev with its core still intact able to land him was great for both sides.
Its possilbe Ainge was pissed Knicks were front and center in Utah/Dallas playoff game with execs and Randle but thats an old story. Dallas was not to thrilled by our presence either.
These are the rumors.
I thought Utah got a good haul back and Clev could afford to do so. Asking for RJ was asking for one of our core pieces. Glad it did not happen as such.
The Knicks have dramatically more flexibility w/o this trade.
I think it was a beautiful trade from the Cavs - they had an almost perfect mix of players they didn't really need + picks. Markkanen didn't really fit with Mobley and Allen (and Love), and Sexton was in dubious contract limbo, with Garland having been anointed as their PG of the future (and All-star!).
The Knicks on the other hand would have seemed somewhat gutted after making this deal. Our key young player reserves would have been tapped out and the Knicks would have lost key draft picks to replenish them. We'd have had to rely on aging FA veterans to fill up slots.
Mitchell to me is a bonafide scorer and is without a doubt a more dynamic offensive player than RJ Barrett is today, and perhaps ever. But looking at this photo kind of helps you understand that Mitchell is a little guy as a 6'1" SG. RJ towers over him.
Mitchell's undersized SG presence really creates a strange size dynamic in the back court. You ideally pair him with an oversized PG (one of the Balls, Simmons, or Giddey would be ideal). Outside of that, Cleveland's large frontcourt of Mobley/Allen is also a reasonable way to compensate for their small backcourt (two 6'1" players!).

Even though Mitchell looks good I am still just fine with not doing the trade. It seems like every team can keep their core and trade for a star but us. 76ers keep their core and Maxey. Cavs keep their core but we had to give up RJ, 3 unprotected picks, 2 of the 3 of Obi,Grimes or IQ and swaps. We would have been left with nothing. I rather do no move than a bad one that keeps us terrible for another 5 plus years with no way to improve. Teams always wants us to pay the Knicks tax.
