Knicks · Fire Thibs (page 80)

With Mitch the issue is when you go down double digits do you put in a guy who doesnt score? Probably should have in retrospect.

You have to get stops on defense and Mitch helps the offense with his rebounding. He was masterful in the first half even Knick haters like Barkley and Reggie Miller were praising him

He’s not an offensive coach. Teams that play press and trap are vulnerable to the backdoor pass.

Thibs will never win a ring. Van Gundy didn’t. They are the same guy.

To make in game adjustments you need a creative coach / coaching staff. The roster will never be perfect, but the coach can help identify and mask the holes with strategy. But the lack of in game adjustments and creativity is hurting this team. We go as far as Thibs takes us.

We had a lot of TOs yesterday. But this happens when you are physically and mentally fatigued OR when the offense lacks structure. Thibs needs a Chris Paul and LeBron james type of IQ for Thibs to be successful (in my opinion).

New coach? Not happening
Trade towns? I doubt it.
Trade Mikal? Maybe but mostlikely nope.

So I can see us adding KD, yannus, Chris Paul type of vet with high IQ.

blkexec @ 6/1/2025 1:15 PM
It’s now on Leon to match the roster and coach. If Thibs is our coach, then we need a solid 7. That 7 must be high IQ players on both sides and must be 2 way players who can operate in an open offensive system that lacks creativity.

OG lacks offensive creativity (for example)

JB thrives in this system because his offensive bag is full of creativity.

Towns lakes offensive creativity as a center, even though he’s one of the best shooting bigs. If you don’t have a post or pivot game as a big, and you don’t have the foot speed, you will not survive in this league full of mobile bigs who can shoot and defend. Towns can’t defend. And when his offense ain’t working (0-4 from 3) he’s a liability and needs to sit.

We need a coach or need Thibs to work on when to sit towns or JB or any main guy, if they don’t have it. And rely on deuce shamett type players, if they have it going.

Tough loss but a successful season.

Hold your heads up. With or without Thibs, we will be better next year than this year.

If we are going to get rid of thibs then get Mike Malone then he best coach on the market. If you want to get assistant coach like Taylor Jenkins to look over thibs.

Can we discuss whether Bud is better than Malone without implicating Thibs in the discussion? I actually think Bud is from the better school of thought for today’s NBA. Putting aside the Phoenix shit show, I think Budenholzer is the heir apparent to the Popovich dynasty. I think he is the top Coach available on the market.

Nalod @ 6/1/2025 4:25 PM
Malone had the multi MVP joker and a chip.
do we not talk about why he was fired?
Sure it was not all his fault.
Bud? He had a chip and MVP Giannis. WE don't talk about why he was fired from Bucks and PHX?
These are the guys talked about over Thibs because they have chips.
Those chips don't transfer to team that hires them.
DLeethal @ 6/2/2025 9:39 AM
The more I think about it, the more it seems completely implausible that Thibs gets fired this offseason. The most fiery I've ever heard Brunson towards the press was when he was asked if Thibs should be back. I would say there is close to 0 chance that Leon turns Brunson from the guy who took the ultimate payout to a disgruntled superstar over this decision. I suppose giving Thibs a promotion to the FO would be a potential wrinkle that would keep the peace if he decides he wants a new coach. But I think it's more likely we make a high profile assistant coach hire and also try to get some guys to bring toughness and physicality back to the team.
houston20 @ 6/2/2025 10:54 AM
If thibs stay hire a good assistant coach like Taylor Jenkins to look over thibs. Plus Taylor Jenkins can work with our young players he is really good at developing young talent. I understand why thibs staff isn’t the greatest in world finally got this answer why would he want someone more smarter and skilled than he is. There is no coach on this current coaching staff that is going for interviews because there bunch of yes men that needed jobs.

In fairness, Johnny Bryant bolted about 6 weeks before training camp. Didn't really leave a ton of time to find a new one. Thibs historically has had some higher level coaches on his bench since he's been here. I think he will add one this year. I just hope it's an offensive guy.

Nalod @ 6/2/2025 12:49 PM

Maybe its Rick Brunson that is not up to the task as Associate head coach?
We really doing the fawn over Bryant thing based on year end when his 64 win team got rolled over by the very same Pacers?

Jonny Bryant I think he is little overrated until this guy gets job and proves he is good coach to me.

You could be right. We love a fresh new dude with hope as a concept after a bad loss. While he has no chip to fawn over he has no warts either.

Dudes like Brad Stevens and Daigenaut were give a few years to grow with a young roster. This is not a team you hand to someone unproven.

Bud and Malone are winners but also have warts. Yes, so does Thibs but we are not close to being done with him.
perhaps a bonafide improved roster and another year he can't crack the chemistry code but regress would he even get the side eye by Leon. Thats just my opinion.

I don't know the answer, but isn't there a limit on how many assistant coaches can we have? And when does "too many coaches" become counter productive?

could be if not all on the same page of course. If Thibs cannot crack the code and get his team to execute does it mean it can't occur? How does another coach do it? Yell more? Do the "be accountable"? how does that actually work on a team after a press conference? Does Kat have some concentration issues and learning problem? He lazy? Arrogant? Just because Jalen lead his dudes him High school and College does not mean he can be equally effective at this level? I love Jalen, but again until otherwise noted he is another short star player who did not lead his team to a chip. Hali is 6-8 PG. He blocks shots sometimes and rebounds when needed. Im not fawning over Hali, but he and SGA are not little guys.
Issues of minutes? The bench which was uneven most of the year. For goodness sake Payne pulled an Elf and seemed to wear out at the end! Kolek needs to step up next year or he likely is not resigned. Dadiet? Maybe he is our secret weapon in the wings? Beauchamp and Anton Watson? Any chance they stick?

We talk about Trading Kat to PHX and Booker being teammates and impetus for a trade? That was 10 years ago and was just for one seasons as teenagers! PHX does not even have a coach.

I respect Durants game but not with that contract.

Really too many dominoes to consider with all these concepts of trades. Mitch is a big part of our offseason and what our FO/Med staff thinks going forward. Fact remains his foul shooting and getting hacked is an issue.

VDesai @ 6/2/2025 1:35 PM
Someone needs to tell Taj to retire as a player and join Thibs bench. A young guy with recent NBA experience who totally understands Thibs system and has an existing rapport with several players on the roster. I think he would be a great addition to the locker room and also has some chops in terms of knowledge of the game and communication.

I hear a lot about Bryant's success as a good developmental coach, but I never hear anything about him as visionary Xs and Os guy. Not saying he isn't, but it makes me wonder why some guys are so high on him. I get that he's a younger, fresher face and he might very well be a damn good head coach if he gets the chance. But what exactly is the hype surrounding him and how close is it to reality?

I think Johnny Bryant needs to go team like charlotte, New Orleans, Portland, and any other small market team to get his feet wet. I think if Johnny Bryant goes to team that’s a big market he could ruin him self permanently for his first job.

We need a system update. The Thibs system is "my ISO is bigger than your ISO". I don't like that system

From what I can tell, ISO is not a Thibs system, it’s a reaction to a thibs system that doesn’t work on the first try. Keep in mind, when they press us, we only have so many mins left on the shot clock. Thats ISO time.

PJ Tucker
Al Horford and KAT are good buddies from what I read thru Dominican basketball. He likely done with Celtic given the circumstances. Iso is a playoff centric thing that has a strong impression but ball movement has improved this year.
