Knicks · Someone enlighten me on +/- (page 1)

Panos @ 11/17/2022 9:10 AM
Can someone explain this statistic to me?
Yesterday, RJ was -18
Both starting Denver forwards were -8. No significant pluses off the bench.
So how does this work? My understanding is +/- is the players offensive points against the points allowed.
So how can the all players from BOTH teams at the same position net negative? Wouldn't there need to be some positives at that position to net against?
Even if you throw Obi's positive 11 in there (some of which at least come at the PF position), it's all still a big negative. Thoughts?

its the score when you were on the floor. RJ's -18 is an outlier for that game. How did he accomplish that? He played with both the starters and the bench in different line ups and in a nutshell was off the floor when the Knicks made runs and on the floor when Denver made their runs.

+/- is:
During the time when a player is on the floor it's the total difference in scores between two teams that takes place. Let's say in the minutes that I played my team went on a 15 to 3 run. My +/- would be a plus 12. In another example if the other team went on a 10 to 3 run while I was on the floor my +/- would be a minus 7

WAR nonsense being applied to nba

Gotcha. I thought it had to do with you vs who you guarded.
Ok. So wow, RJs number is pretty damning for this game

Oh, I know - he's not that good!

Seriously, though, he was pretty bad last night, and kinda has been.

Thank god Thibs played Obi who had an off game (wow, some bad misses) but he positively influenced the game.

82 games has +/- type numbers vs. your opposing position. Hard to track "who you guard" but it does show Randle vs. whoever's PF for the other team (compiled)

They are interesting

I was just talking about the regular +/- stat. Highest of all time is Jordan, then Lebron,Cris Paul,Magic, David Robinson in that order

0-9 from 3 will impact that. You can almost count them scoring each time he missed a three.

Thing is, Barrett is not a good enough 3 point shooter to go 0-9.

Steph Curry can go 0-11 and I’d still want him to shoot that 12th.

John Starks can go 0-11 in the finals and I still expect him to take that shot.

Barrett? Pass the effin ball. He isn’t a good enough shooter to go 0-9.

I always thought +/- took into account fouls and turnovers.

He was wide open for a bunch of them. If he starts passing up open 3's it likely results in a turnover. The bigger issue was him playing so much when he was clearly hurting. At least this left IQ in there to win the game

RJ has got to adjust and figure out different ways to impact games outside of sloppy passing and missed shots.
