Knicks · Lu Dort or Herb Jones? (page 1)

Because the improved defense has started to change the season the Knicks could double down by adding one of the two. Both are ELITE wing defenders which the Knicks need now that Cam is not long for the team. Jones is the longer more versatile defender Dort's the better offensive player at this point They are both about the same age. They both would be MAJOR upgrade on RJ defensively.

Which of the two would fit the Knicks better? More importantly what would it take to get either of them here? For the record I would probably go for Jones if I had to chose one but either would do.

Jones is essential to New Orleans championship aspirations the same way grimes has been essential to the Knicks playing better. I don’t see him being available whatsoever. Both are good players but I’m not big on giving up assets for either. The cost would be significant for Dort. Matisse thybulle would be a decent flier. He’s also an elite defender and is out of the Philly rotation and is a restricted free agent this summer. So I have no doubt he’s available. But once again we would be adding a non shooter. There’s so few elite defensive wings in the league who can really shoot it. It says so much of the value of grimes. These guys end up in the mikal bridges category which is so few and far between. But with a healthy rotation of Mitch, Randle, Barrett, grimes, Brunson, quickley, McBride, Toppin and Hart, the opening would be for a big wing off the bench (kind of like cam) who can defend at an elite level and shoot just well enough.

Royce O’neale. That’s another player who’s skill set is ideal here. He’s a free agent in 2024 and has a partial guarantee for next year, but nets just gave up a first round pick for him so unlikely he shakes free.

Dort is like 6’3”, not ideal for SF position, and just got extended.

Neither guy is proven from deep.

Knicks just need to draft a wing or 2.

Completely agree. There’s guys in the middle of the first round every year and the Knicks have 2 shots this draft.

My money, and Dolans are on that 6-7 22 year old from Duke.
Sub off the bench? Cam is that guy but if traded, I’ll guess we get an easy contract non permanent player in return.
Maybe we draft the next one, and maybe the best scenario is that kid outplays RJ. Not because RJ sucks, but because he just flat out is better. A tradable high value RJ is a good thing.

Matisse Thybulle brings absolutely no offense at all so not ideal. Herb Jones is not a great shooter true but he is not any worse than RJ and brings miles better defense.

I understand many are down on RJ these days but there’s no comparing Herb Jones to RJ.

If I’m trying to build this team out, I’m trying to upgrade Mitch to either Myles Turner or Deandre Ayton. I want the similar defensive post presence but with more offensive versatility. Then I’m seeing what our 9 man rotation looks like with that. Turner/Ayton along with our other starting 4 and quickley, Toppin, McBride and Hartenstein off the bench. Then draft a 10th man wing shooter like Gradey Dick. Not saying expand the rotation to 10, but have that player ready in case. Not saying this rotation takes a major step forward or anything but it takes what’s working now and expands on it.
