Knicks · how do you all feel about Obi coming back to this rotation? (page 1)

fishmike @ 12/15/2022 10:04 AM
no agenda here... just curious what the mob thinks on this

We have some time but let's say he was available Friday?

SupremeCommander @ 12/15/2022 10:11 AM
me? great. Thibs is leaning into the yoots now, so that bodes well for him. Also, I thought the worst moments of last night's game were in the half court, plodding sets. Toppin has not been playing great but I thought the running element he beings to the table might have come in handy...
Knixkik @ 12/15/2022 10:12 AM
He should come back to his normal role. 14 mpg behind Randle and a couple of quick rotations alongside him since Hartenstein hasn’t done much this year.
JesseDark @ 12/15/2022 10:13 AM
Given Randle’s strong play of late, Obi is not really missed. He primarily just basket hangs.IMHO he doesn’t bring that much to the table.

So the best shooter on team for most of the season does not bring that much to the table? To this team that was near the bottom of the league in shooting 3's. People are quick to forget. I wonder how many more wins we would have had when Obi was shooting well if we made the switch to the young guards earlier. Instead of the traffic cones of Evan and Rose. Obi can never win. He tries to play to his strength he gets criticized for not being able to shoot. He learned how to shoot and play a role completely opposite to his strengths and people still criticize him. Let him go to a team with good ball movement and watch how many people be surprised and how well he does.

Personally I'd replace Hartenstein with Obi and keep Sims in the rotation.

Chandler @ 12/15/2022 10:25 AM
second unit can use him. He needs to attack the basket more, not just leak outs and backcuts

would like to see him in PnR and PnPops

Now that we are 6th in the standings I want to stay there. We are a Randle injury away from dropping like a rock. While Obi hasn’t really impressed this year, he can still take some of the load off of Randle. Our D has really been tied together so if he misses his rotations it’s going to stand out. Our defense has really been the difference in this team becoming a legitimate playoff team. Obi is going to have to figure it out. I have no doubt he will be on a short leash.

Also, I don’t think Obi and Hart fit together. Our rim protection and rebounding take a big hit there. It also relegates Obi to the corners as a catch and shoot guy. When his shot isn’t falling it really hurts the team since he is afraid to, or not allowed to, put the ball on the floor and attack the defense

IMHO one of the things that really makes the bench & perimeter guys click in the Hart rotation - and we are talking Grimes, IQ, McBride, and even RJ - is iHarts defensive rotations. He moves into space REALLY well. His off ball defense is some really good stuff. Obi and Sims are light years away from this although Sims has his moments.

And on offense, it's the same for Hart. He doesn't have the explosion or consistent shot outside of the foul line floater, but he is most always in the right positions for the other guys around him.

Hart makes it much easier on the young kids to do their thing and Sims and especially Obi are nowhere near that.

Hart gotto get his offensive flow going though.

See this differently. Why are we not giving Hart some credit for the better defense and improved play? Him being a major change backing up Randle. Also feel he has brought better rebounding. Had 5 offensive rebounds last night. Yes he is a bit clumsy but think he is that glue guy fans take for granted.

As for thread topic. Obi can't lose his spot due to injury. When ready, he is our backup PF. Still a young athletic asset. Do not see how Sims would earn minutes over him. However, if unit does not perform as well with him or he struggles, then you have to consider Hart in the PF backup role. Which would take minutes from Obi

martin @ 12/15/2022 11:21 AM
We need all of Obi's minutes going to Randle so that he can hit the 30 point mark

there's more to basketball than just shooting right? How's Obi's defense? Rebounding? Passing? Screens?

Exactly. Not for nothing but McBride is going to beat out Obi for minutes soon and it's not because of his shooting.

I love Obi and value what he brings but recognize what he doesn't. He's a willing defender, but not the best.

With 2020 Randle and a resurgent RJ, there isn't much room for Obi.

The best thing we can do for Obi (and ourselves) is trade him somewhere he might have a larger opportunity and we can get back a first round pick at least.

I don't agree with this. There is an ocean of room for Obi to do his thing. Grimes is gonna be a much more prominent player soon and he didn't bat an eye at Brunson or RJ and Randle's usages.

Thibs has made all the right moves, so I leave this up to him. I believe he will find a way. Or he might sit him out. I seriously can't figure out Thibs next moves, but it's working.

Me personally, I don't think Obi will have must impact negative or positive.

BigDaddyG @ 12/15/2022 1:21 PM
I'd feel good about it. He needs to build up his value. Right now, I'd say he's could fetch a protected first rounders or get packages for a star. But he needs to regain momentum.

I hear this all the time, and you know what happens. Obi regains his value and thats why everybody is like, ok lets keep him. This version of Obi is a keeper. lol

It sounds good, but at least in knick land, I've rarely seen us increase someones value then trade em. We continue to trade players when their value has dropped. And keep players when your value increases. Not saying your right or wrong. Logically it makes since, when you talking about the stock market. Buy low and sell high. But with knick players, it never seems to work out like that.

In the video linked for the Defense thread you created it was quite disturbing to me how Obi appeared somewhat clueless on his defensive rotations. Sure other guys missed assignments, but there were quite a few examples where Obi just looked lost in space.

I'm an Obi fan, but the Knicks kind of painted themselves in a corner when they drafted him in the first place. The way the Knicks are using him... I'd say it just would make sense to trade him for a rotation forward who can play defense and hit an occasional three.

Jae Crowder, John Collins?
