Knicks · My dumb unfounded trade proposal - RJ for Jaylen Brown (page 1)

Rookie @ 12/15/2022 12:54 PM
Why would Boston trade Brown, because he is going to walk as a FA after next season. RJ is under contract for 4 more years after this one. I would throw in 2 FRP's top 15 protected to sweeten the deal.

Why do the Knicks do this deal. Brown could be a true #1 scoring option on this Knicks team

While this trade doesn't make us contenders, it does get us to the 2nd rd of the playoffs as a likely 4th seed.

I'd say he's staying unless they decline to pay him his max. They were really close to a title so I'd be shocked if they didn't. Also, they'd want more picks with a minimum of two being unprotected. I don't think Brown is better than Donovan Mitchell, but he's up there. You won't be able to nickle and dime him away from the Celts.

I'm a huge Jaylen Brown fan, so this is a no brainer to me. But I haven't watched him as close as RJ. Also how much is he expecting to get paid?

I would expect he's going to get north of 30M

This is it.

After that, maybe there is an outside Durant-like need to be the main man on your own team, but that's slim.

I don't think they hang up the phone, but yeah, it would probably take more. They would trade him because he is always in trade talks. His fit with Tatum and desire to play behind Tatum have been in question. He is extension eligible now but no extension. Likely he leaves as a FA.

I just can't see him walking and I can't see Boston "trading back" for youth and picks. Boston committed to the Brown/Tatum pairing when there were lots of question marks surrounding it. Now it's paying dividends and they're fresh off a finals appearance and at the top of the standings.

I think the only way it ends is if Boston goes into a taildive. I'm not sure they'd even revisit that Brown for Durant proposal if available.

I'm not putting a timeline on this deal. I don't think Boston really needs to take a tail dive. An early playoff exit could be enough to start reevaluating things. It might be small, but I do see opportunity here for a player that would be a good fit and help us get to the next level of our growth. I think the biggest factor here is if Brown wants to stay in Boston. If he is not happy being second banana to Tatum that will become a factor as his contract winds down and he gets closer to being an UFA. Boston could get a decent return if they act before he walks.

Nalod @ 12/15/2022 2:23 PM
Brown getting all NBA max? This is a tough call. Do we want to pay that too?
Tatum is the league MVP for now. If he can't handle that with what he is paid, and will be paid I'd just as soon pass.
Im not going full Brown vs. RJ comparisons but if we skip 4 years to an in prime full max Brown and give up picks to get him the question is how much is Brown really worth over and above RJ?
Was Brown thought to be this good 4 years ago? I don't recall.
As fans we don't have a real say but as fans can we at least see what RJ happens to evolve to? Brown is a sure thing and you pay big time for that. Is he worth it? Sure, but the jury is out until RJ get to be 26.
Brown can't carry the franchise himself. SO if he can't handle being wingman to Tatum then what does that say about him?
Knixkik @ 12/15/2022 2:34 PM
Brown would be great, but I don’t see it at this point.
MS @ 12/15/2022 2:59 PM
I would trade RJ, Obi, Quick and 1st for Jalen. He’s a top 20 player and only getting better. They would never move him.

Why wouldn’t Boston pay? NBA Finals and best record in the east. Not happening.

Boston 25M over the luxury tax. RJ’s poison pill contract lessens their tax burden. They haven’t played many good teams yet so while they are a good team, they mmight not be as good as their record

Philc1 @ 12/17/2022 10:53 PM
Not a terrible or far fetched idea but we’d have to throw in a 1st. If we trade RJ for an upgrade I want to get him out of the East
doomed @ 12/18/2022 12:04 AM

He is 100% a max player. RJ is the most perplexing player on the roster. He looks like he could eventually be Jaylen Brown but the kid can't shoot. You flip RJ with Brown and the Knicks are right there with the Cavs in the standings. They wouldn't be the favorite in the East but a 2nd round playoff series would be a lock. I just don't see why the Celtics wouldn't pay him. 26ppg scorers aren't easy to get.

BigRedDog @ 12/18/2022 8:08 AM
Boston isn't this dumb or cheap and they aren't trading with the Knicks.

Is that why they offered us Brown plus picks for Porzingis years ago?

That was before Brown was established and Porzingis was a rising star. But there was no way we were going to trade Porzingis there.

Phil should have made that trade. I wonder if Dolan told him no. That was the type of 2 for 1 trade that would have changed the franchises trajectory into a championship contender. We probably would have taken Lauri Markkanen. I think at the time the Knicks wanted Crowder too.

I agree. Boston will do everything they can to keep him. I don’t see any realistic scenario where they don’t pay him the max. Brown does not strike me as someone who is going to walk to try to be the #1. He has been playing Tatum for 5 years now, and they seem to work well together. If he ever became available, I would offer RJ, Quickley, Toppin, and 3 picks for him. I think you slot him in at SF and this team wins a championship.

wargames @ 12/18/2022 9:36 AM
If he becomes available and the Celtics are willing to trade him to NY their divisional rival. You give them whatever they want.

Only because it’s lowkey a sport miracle
