Quoting the author and not Derrick directly --

Young players like McBride are part of why Rose said he wants to stay with the Knicks and not get traded, despite his current spot on the bench.

I didn't think I could like Derrick Rose more, but there it is. I thought trading Rose would be better for Rose. I wanted that for him. But if he wants to be here, I want him here. That guy is a professional and deserves respect. He can retire here for all I care, so long as the Knicks can make the money work for both sides.

Keep Thibs and Rose together for as long as we can. Hell, add Taj to the staff next year if interested.

These guys clearly share coach's mentality, which only strengthens the rest of the team buying in. I keep comparing the unity of this team vs. the Dantoni or Woodson (once JR stopped listening) teams.

Rose is a net positive to this team, even when he's not playing.

yeah, I'd guess Fournier same

This is really awesome, to have guys like that. To show what it takes to be a pro's pro. To really mentor, that's better than gold. Yes, Taj would be much welcome with a team non-roster role when he decides to hang em up. I always wanted our former players to play a role in team development. Imagine if Kurt Thomas mentored Simms and Mitch? Or LJ? Camby?

some good stuff from article

“It’s my job to steer him in the right direction, which I told his mom and his family,” the veteran guard recalled. “It’s bigger than basketball.”

That didn’t change when the young guard replaced Rose in the Knicks’ rotation.

If anything, Rose is doing even more to help McBride as he begins to emerge as a key piece off the bench for coach Tom Thibodeau’s team. He frequently checks in with McBride, reminding him to take care of his body, particularly with his recent spike in minutes. They are competing for playing time, but they also both want to win, and Rose is doing his best to do his part.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better vet. I’m just very thankful he’s been able to take me under his wing,” McBride said. “Derrick is a great person, on and off the court. I think that’s the most important thing. One of the best things I’ve learned from him was not to get too high, not to get too low, because things change quickly in this league.”

Thibs attracts solid players.

Good for Drose. He’s already played a whole career so he understands his value isn’t just on the court. He can be a mentor and still earn his contract, and stay ready just in case. And his footprint will be on the careers of Deuce, IQ, grimes etc, in addition to Brunson. This is how you extend your career in the league.
