Knicks · Will the Knicks trade for an upgrade at SG? (page 7)

However, do think that if the Knicks feel they have a chance to compete now (They do), they will try to make a trade for a higher profile SG that they feel is better now and has a longer history of production. They may also feel their is a need to move Grimes back to the second unit. A move that would allow Grimes to get more shots and help the shooting need in the second unit. Are they also thinking they need a better PF to backup Randle? Better C to backup MR? Do not know. If the Knicks do , it increase the possibility that Obi, Deuce and Sims lose their rotation spots or that they will be traded. Not saying that is what I want to happen but just reading the room. We all know how much Thibs loves proven players.I see the Knicks definitely trading guys that Thibs has moved on from. (Rose, Cam, EF). But also looking not afraid to add a couple of youngins if they feel a considerable piece is available.
Two months later and still hoping the FO makes these moves.
RJ's contract is difficult to move and then you have Grimes IQ and McBride playing well and improving on rookie contracts. I understand why the front office is hesitant to make any moves at the 2/3 spot.

Realistically the Knicks are a 6-10 seed, most likely maxing out at a first round playoff and super maxed out at winning that round and then losing the next.
I don't know where in the spectrum of "chance to compete now" but the development of Grimes as a starter is probably of more importance to an unknown trade for a SG.

Yes. I don't get "the clock is ticking" feeling at all. It seems likely for the roster to keep on improving through internal development. All Knicks own draft picks are getting lots of court time and are improving. Deuce hitting the two big 3's last night was huge.

I'm here with the caveat that the kid in me is hoping we hit our Phoenix Suns' Bubble moment where things finally just click, for real and correct. That the team settles into their respective roles and take the right shots and make the right pass. Not sure if we are 1 player away or 5 players away from that.

Believe the FO committed to RJ at least for a couple more years. Think that is a good move.
Upgrading for Grimes would be a good move. One which would allow him to help the second unit.
How we do that? Not sure. Maybe trading Obi, Deuce, Cam some draft picks and some salaries to match another contract.
I am good with the patient strategy and smaller moves that improve our bench.
However, we all want to have a team that is better than 7 or 8th seed. The path to that is by adding an elite SG or SF. The FO knows that.

Agree with the fact keeping Grimes in first unit is better for the long term. But fans are short term thinkers.
As mentioned several times, I am okay with Grimes staying in the first unit. I keep envisioning a second half where he breaks out and gets rid of the rust to return to what he was at the end of last year. Good chance of that. I am a hopeful fan.
My point is that if he does not, we will have the scenario you described above. Which I feel the FO is fully aware of. Reason why I think they
are looking for an elite type SG or SF. At least that is what the rumors are pointing to.

Realistically, Grimes is within his first year of games as a player. And certainly up against starter level guys, and he is ALWAYS the POA defender and is getting the landscape of all the best guards and some small forwards in the league. He has probably hit his rookie or sophmore wall some no less just a hint fatigued from all the D he is playing.
Don't discount the level of learning he is doing out there night after night. This is GOLD in terms of his development cycle, and he is literally one of the best at it in the league. He has got to be put in those positions.
You find a SG who can help off the bench cause Grimes will be the long term SG for the Knicks, there should be no doubt. They wouldnt put him in a trade for a player like Donovan who grew up in Westchester and is a Mets fans and was probably sending smoke signals to Leon for the last year. That's the level of confidence the FO has in him. They valued his kid over RJ.

I think Ainge did too, unfortunately. Go figure, he didn't want the next Kobe Bryant straight up.

Knicks are committed to Grimes. Whether that means committing to him NOW at SG is to be seen. Lavine rumors seem to point to true Knciks interest in upgrading at SG. As does the rumor of moving RJ to SG with the addition of OG.
If I am going to be honest, I have more confidence in Grimes becoming elite over RJ. But that may be because Grimes is my favorite player.
It's also may be because I am tougher on RJ due to his high draft selection and my possible unrealistic expectations of him.
The trade deadline will be interesting.

RJ has not improved as you would expect from his pedigree (he's literally been coached to be a pro since grade school) and draft position surely plays into that (expectations).
I dont want him gone, and part of what makes an OG trade attractive for me (assuming its Obi/Cam/acquired picks) is it moves RJ back to SG where he DOES has elite size and can blow through shrimpy guards and get to the rim. That's his best attribute. Also gets Mitch/Sims following him for easy garage points on the misses. That's when they are GOOD misses. Then you have IQ/Grimes coming off the bench playing D and HUNTING for shots

That's why I'm saying trade for Gobert! Why trade for someone who's going to push Grimes and RJ off the court.
OG isn’t great but he’d be a really nice fit with Grimes/Mitch defensively and he’d fit better with Brunson/Jules simply because of his legit size/D and that he’s less ball dependent.

Just hoping it's not Zach Levine. A couple rumors that they may be also interested in DeRozan. However, judging by what the Bulls are asking for Caruso, they are not serious trade partners.
May just be dangling guys out there to see if there is another dumb team out there willing to offer a Gobert type package.
Post mentioned VanVleet? Seems like a bad fit with JB.

I feel like FVV played shooting guard with Lowry and Lowry takes lots of charges. Brunson also takes lots of charges. LOL

Pass on both. Derozan can’t shoot the 3 and that’s our biggest need by far. Lavine would cost too much and I still have PTSD from the moronic Eddy Curry trade 17 years ago that by itself arguably set us back half a f ing decade maybe more

Some are seeing what a difference a more experience SG like Hart makes.
Cue the "Will the Knicks trade for an upgrade at SF?" thread
Although JHart may already be there as well.
Loved the JB, IQ, JHart, Randle lineup. Adding MR to that will be fun to watch.
Only concern is that JHart is playing himself into declining his player option.

Realgm had a report that the NBA will potentially offer 4 different packages to service providers. With the amount of TV and streaming services, I expect the new deal will lead to another big cap increase meaning any deals signed before will look cheap. I'm not sure how free agency will work out but the Knicks will have his bird rights. I think there's a very low possibility of him leaving.

Just hoping it's not Zach Levine. A couple rumors that they may be also interested in DeRozan. However, judging by what the Bulls are asking for Caruso, they are not serious trade partners.
May just be dangling guys out there to see if there is another dumb team out there willing to offer a Gobert type package.Post mentioned VanVleet? Seems like a bad fit with JB.
Only concern is that JHart is playing himself into declining his player option.Realgm had a report that the NBA will potentially offer 4 different packages to service providers. With the amount of TV and streaming services, I expect the new deal will lead to another big cap increase meaning any deals signed before will look cheap. Don't think he will leave but he will want to get paid. Can't see the Knicks not knowing this and therefore already prepared to pay. Hopefully you are right and the increase in cap won't affect us too badly. So far, he looks like he will be worth it.

I thought the new deal and significant cap increase comes in 2025?
