Deja vu

You sound exactly the same as all of those Julius Randle non-believers (just last year) which is why I felt the need to create a "LEAVE JULIUS RANDLE ALONE!!! Thread.

Trust me when I say (as I said last year about Julius Randle who everyone was booing) R.J. Barrett isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.

I can;t wait until you are banned. Get the fuck out of here with this juvenile bullshit.

I love how he gives us multi game totals like that's in some way more significant than averages. 33 rebounds sounds better than 4.75 RPG. 24 assists sounds better than 3.4 APG.

Anyway, RJ has shown up finally and has performed admirably the last 7 games. I hope he keeps it up. We need it.
But you know how much he reminds me of Kobe? NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT.

Nalod @ 5/4/2023 9:09 AM

NYMentality goes for the big stat comps when bringing in Kobe to the mix.
RJ has earned his critics ire given but it seems like a religion one way or the other. Anti or pro.
Seems like “Well if we replaced him with a better player, we’d be better”. Thats obvious.
Nalod contention is where does RJ land when he is 25 and naturally what is int he teams best interests.
Brunson for sure moved up the time line and I do see where RJ and Randle don’t seem to get on at the same time.
But, and this where nobody can answer, is this written in stone? If Randle is passing out more as we have seen, then RJ delivers.
We are also seeing better playmaking from RJ and with young players you see regressions before a breakthrough. We saw it with IQ and OBI in the last season. Same with Mitch, and who can recall Isiah Hart stinking up the place after a strong start? Its a long season and coaches ask players to keep doing more. RJ does rise to the occasion. His inconsistency is indisputable. For some, its conclusive. For others, its hopeful.

For our yoots, we all know Thibs is maddening and some can’t handle it or get burnt out. Thibs has a nice track record as a knick coach so perhaps he is adapting too!

Im enjoying this run and the young players are in the mix! Where it goes is the wondrous adventure of being a sports fan!!!

I've said it 100 times this year if I said it once, and that is if RJB is the Knicks biggest issue, we are in GREAT shape. And according to many, RJB is the Knicks biggest issue.

He's the least of my worries. HE's already a viable scoring option on a good team. He's fitting his game around 2 alpha scorers and he's still learning his way around the NBA. He most definitely has #1 scorer potential, to me it's clear as day.

IT's not as easy to be the #3 option on a good team than the #1 option anywhere else. He's adjusting. He's getting some of the best coaching, leadership and nurturing in the league. And it's manifesting into playoff wins...right before our eyes.

This team is in a great fucking place.

Pressure bursts pipes or creates diamonds. Does he have flaws in his game? Yeah, and he still has a lot to prove. Is his response to the pressure encouraging? Yeah, and I think most Knicks fans are willing to show more patience. Still wouldn't hesitate to trade him in a package for a more established star wing tho.
technomaster @ 5/4/2023 1:03 PM
There's a fair gap between RJ and Kobe - not necessarily based on his stats (RJ was a superior player statistically over their first 3 seasons).
In a nutshell, you basically see better innate physical tools, feel, and skills. I think it's totally fine that he doesn't measure up to Kobe.

But I think he measures up pretty well and can soon surpass the greatest Knick SGs of all time. That's something.

Think:
Monroe
Barnett
Houston
Starks
Sprewell

I can't really speak too much about Monroe and Barnett - before my time. If you look up Monroe's stats, it looks like he deferred to Clyde for the 5 or so years after joining the Knicks from the Bullets. His stats as a Knick were not particularly overwhelming, but he did manage a few all-star berths.

I do have crisp memories of the 90s Knicks with Houston/Starks/Sprewell and seeing the best those guys could offer. All of those guys were great Knicks. But none of them had eye popping stats. Sprewell, while ferocious, was sort of like bigger Starks in both his passion and inconsistent shooting. Houston, while an exceptional shooter for his era, didn't sport the all-around game of his contemporaries and statwise, only cracked 20ppg twice toward the tail end of his Knick career (leading up to the knee surgery he never recovered from).

Starks (the Dunk) and Houston (the bounce) had signature moments. I can't think of a signature Sprewell play - I just think about his tomahawk dunks (though he was at his athletic peak with the Warriors - he rarely did that with the Knicks, preferring to conserve energy)

When you narrow down to homegrown SG Knicks (ie drafted by the team or joined the team as rookies/overseas free agents), the pickings are extremely slim:
Gerald Wilkins (kind of like Starks/Sprewell, but less good - still he was good for some strong games vs Jordan)
Trent Tucker (kind of like Joe Dumars, but much less good)
Hubert Davis (kind of like Houston, but less good - but he did have that signature 4-point play that killed the Bulls)

see here's where people really miss the tone. There are no issues. Youngest team in the playoffs right now, good shot at seeing the ECF and a roster with no bad contracts, extra picks, players with upside on both ends of the court, well coached... I am enjoying everything about this season and team.

Up until playoffs and first couple games in there RJ has not been good in the rotation and the problems are kinda the same problems we have seen over 4 years. So you ask questions like what's going to be the plan to address the parts of the rotation that are hurting us or underachieving. You look at stats, analytics, really any method of measurement and the two guys who have no had great seasons are RJ and Obi. That's it. If we stick with them cool. If we dont I get that also.

Its just chat

Again, NO ONE ever said RJ reminds anyone of Kobe. The stats were shown just to convey how many guys produce at a young age like RJ has produced. No one would ever say RJ and Kobe have similar skill sets or projections. They are completely different players. Paul Pierce on the other hand......

Some of you just like to argue.
