Knicks · How to get better (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 2/5/2023 12:50 PM
1. Add a center who can compliment Mitch. A guy who can score and start( cuz mitch can only do 50-60 games realistically) I really believe strongly in the draft this year on this one. We can make do w hartenstein this year

2. Add a wing who is 6-7/-6-9 who can spell the 2-3-4. We can’t allow nights where rj or even Randle
go 6-22. If the price was right— to me the equivalent of a protected 1 or 3 seconds. I’d really try to get Saddiq Bey I think he’ll be better here in this environment. I see his % climbing here and his defense improving — we have 25 games or so left— he might be a big difference maker without driving up costs

3.allow for improvement with grimes iq Toppin McBride Push these guys with new draft picks to keep our team stocked for longer term success. Keep the youth train moving
I like what they did w keels. I don’t like him as a prospect but I love the way the Knicks are brining him along. Two years of g league— either he gets it or he gets replaced at minimal cost

Agree this makes us a bit better.
1. Still need a true Number one.
2. High level shooters who can defend.
3. Stronger bench.

Continue to nail draft picks. Trade Randle for picks/assets next offseason

No not interested in trading Randle.
His output is excellent. Occasionally when he goes south( same w rj) having a high skill wing to sub would do wonders.
Case in fact. I think we win the game yesterday if we sub early for Barrett. Prob is we don’t have a high quality wing back up. They tried w reddish and Fournier but not right pieces

We do the same cycle every 2 years. Randle’s value goes up, we can trade him for assets/picks and won’t do it then the following season his value come crashing down to earth

Honestly, it’s bad management.

They were exposed by the Hawks and thought what exactly.

Rose is breaking down, let’s sign him to a three year deal. Let’s sign the same guy in Kemba whose breaking down and ailing for years to a multi year deal? Injury + no defense?

We have a center who gets injured a lot, is limited offensively (love what Mitch brings) why don’t we sign another center to a multi year deal with an injury history?!

They always had their eye on Brunson, perhaps don’t give out multi year deals to guys. Burks was the only guy we should have signed. Our guys weren’t in strong demand and they panicked.

Could have gotten Monk, Barton, Drummond, Howard on 1 year deals and just reset. Instead they signed a whole bunch of guys that weren’t the right fits and had to scramble to get rid of them and give up Duren who will be better than Mitch within 1-2 years.

All of which was compounded by the coach who played Burks at the 1 destroying his value, relegated IQ to the bench when he should have started and then giving 1st rounders for a guy that can’t play and the coach won’t play.

I know it’s beating a dead horse, but they seem to do everything on the fly.

The team has a dilema they need a SF just to defend/rebound and score occasionally. The next issue is breaking into the rotation. If Thibs won't play Reddish only a few options are avilable and not wanting to trade away picks.

The team can still sign a number of fringe players to play spot minutes here and there like Josh Jackson, even Amir Simms that plays similar to J. Dudley or SloMo Anderson.

Some may say Obi is too slow and lack defense/awareness, but he can/could still play spot minutes at SF. He can score and rebound a bit, and should be told to foul hard if he gets beat, use the 6 fouls he has, as the refs are going to call fouls anyways. Just to mix it up and give more options especially adding another player that cuts and make moves like Grimes, just saying...

Overall it seems not much will happen until Reddish and Fournier trades happen or don't. Thibs rotation is a hard nut/not to crack, lol

what are we doing with Thibs? He is 65. How much more time does he have. And I mean this honestly. Being a HC of an NBA franchise has to be one of the most demanding jobs out there.

Same with Leon Rose- dude is 62.

Maybe you can say we've stabilized the franchise.

Do we have successors in place to carry on in 5 years?

Rose & company have done a nice job getting to here - but I don't see this as the foundation of a franchise that can really do anything intimidating in the play offs.

RJ can't hit an open 3pter.

Brunson is a great player, but he is an overachiever and not carrying a franchise anywhere.

And Randle is part knuckle, part All Star. This is as good as he will ever be.

As far as internal improvement, who is a keeper? IQ?

The possibility of Bey is what I’ve really been intrigued by. Could be a big piece to add here. A lot of untapped potential there.

also seddiq bey:

Grimes, IQ, McBride, RJ,Mitch,Simms-that's our internal development and keepers. In that order( meaning I'd trade RJ before I trade Grimes)
Mitch could move up a couple of spots if he develops some sort of offensive move(s). RJ needs to become elite at something. Just pick one thing and do it. I don't care what it is: 3pointers, defense, being effective after getting in the paint( up an under move, or become a good passer from there, something)
