I think at first Hart will come off the bench to spell RJ and Grimes but eventually I think Thibs will start him. We'll likely just have Hart replace Grimes and Grimes replace Deuce in terms of minutes.

Why?

they were really aggressive in getting Grimes into the starting line up the second he was available. It's not Grimes that has to worry IMO, it's RJ.

RJ will always start. Seems like he will eventually get traded though.

start yes... but if suddenly RJ is somewhere around 25mpg and closing games you gonna be surprised?

RJ is a 20 pt scorer and 22.
JHart is an off the bench 2/3 with not better range. RJ has bank the next 4 years. He is not worried.
Now, he might be tradeed off season, but he not worried about that.
Like most things we all excited about JHart and how we gonna go undefeated while our favorite knick of the week might get some time cut.
I hope he makes Thibs decisions hard by playing well, and all our yoot also playing well!
This trade also makes life a little tougher for IQ as he wants an extension and knicks have an established player who I would imagine have a handshake on a price to resign him.
Say for Jhart its 3 years at 15mm per.
We can throw it all out there, but have to keep an open mind about things. Including RJ getting traded!

RJ needs to wake up and grow up a little. WHen he's 1-9 (and 0-8 from 3pt) he has to find other ways to help the team. We'd like him to score 20+ game but we don't need him to if it comes at the expense of inefficiency

he will be playing himself to the bench in the 4th quarter if he doesn't snap out of this. Thibs has already shown he can live with RJ on the bench

that's the difference with Randle this year. He still has his shit shooting nights but he's got 15 boards and 8 dimes. Josh Hart is a great player for RJ to learn from... not gonna lie. He SHOULD threaten RJ's minutes and I hope it pushes RJ to be better. We will see. This type of competition is good, unless we are looking to move on from RJ, if that is the case submarining his values isnt helpful.

We'll see

A player should look for every way to help his team regardless of how well he may be shooting on a given night, no?

I have not seen every recent game, but the eye test tells me he is taking fewer bad shots (no more of them mamba turnaround fadeaways). It is just that many of his shots are not falling any more, including quite a few open three pointers.

Hope our right. On balance he's not a very good shooter. Love to see the Knicks move on from him before his value drops.

I like RJ but as he continues to mature he is filling out more and I think that is a part of the reason for his falling defense. He is just getting slower imo.
That said, he should be finishing better.

RJ to the bench and Hart into the starting lineup might help us IF Grimes can improve his shooting and make up for RJ's 15-20 points (on low efficiency.)
Sounds possible with Grimes and his sweet shot.

RJ is a rhythm scorer which means once he gets it going he can carry a team. But he’s also a high volume inefficient user playing with 2 other high volume and more efficient scorers. So the pressure for RJ to start hitting early builds up. He simply plays better when he’s the alpha male and the teams success rides on his shoulders.
Since Randle is the alpha and JB is trying to take that crown. It’s obvious to me a bench role fits RJ based on how this roster is forming.

But we (myself included) have to realize RJ is also part of the play the yoots and let them develop strategy since he’s only 22. Playing that 3rd wheel position is not an easy role for him. And he looks better when plays are run through him vs him making it up as he goes. Just something I noticed. IQ is different and doesn’t need any plays. And IQ is still affective playing next to JB and Randle, but sometimes he’s also a little stagnant while watching Randle hold the ball in crunch time like he’s Kobe.

Adding hart definitely puts pressure on grimes, IQ and RJ.

I read that we gave up both an our Top 14 protected first and our 2024 second from Charlotte. I mean, unless these 30 year old euro guys are secretly planning to come solidify our bench for the playoffs, this doesn’t feel like a value add deal.
Nalod @ 2/11/2023 11:48 AM
We, the fans are hyping up Jhart to star expectations. He is slotted by some to Put RJ on the bench, preplace Grimes, Deuce and the need for mopping floors.

Lets see how the kid does and the chemistry. Seems we got our glue guy that Thibs wants. Curious how it unfolds.

I agree with that. RJ should lose some weight in the offseason. He’s too bulky right now

Rookie wrote:None of you seem to want to address the issue of ‘does Hart who can be a FA after this season see himself as a starter’. If he’s a team first guy and has already been guaranteed a payday by the FO then fine’. But if he sees himself as a starter does he buy in to a bench role and then bolt as a FA? Easier to move RJ and his inefficient shooting to the bench and let him earn his way back.

To quell your fears

I loved watching jHart in his first game as a Knick. Because he's not a big scorer, this is not one of those trades that gets a lot of national publicity, but it will be a difference maker. I'm not concerned whether he replaces Grimes as a starter or gets his minutes off the bench. Just so long as he gets significant minutes and is there in the 4th quarter to drive other teams crazy.
