Knicks · Knicks need a stretch 4/ big shooter off the bench (page 1)
The good news is that the FO has the resources to find that player.

Obi does fit the offense when he’s hitting 3’s. He was hot last couple months but has cooled off big time last 2 games.

Benching Randle is a recipe for disaster. If he’s not the guy then you have to trade him. I think it’s more about roster fit and roles. We need more consistent shooting from the guard and wing position. If Grimes can’t get there he shouldn’t start or finish but I do think he can get there and the experience is good for his growth. RJ however is never going to be a consistently good shooter and has been low IQ in pressure situations. I won’t even mention his defense. Mikal Bridges at the 3 would be a massive upgrade. I would go all in for that. High IQ total package and team player lockeroom guy

Im not talking about bringing Randle off the bench. You're right that would cause problems. Just the 4th quarter.
When Randle lost his temper in a game, Thibs said in a very fatherly way that not just the team, but the organization needs to support Randle. I thought it was over the top considering what this was about. Thibs has given Randle plenty of slack. Thibs clearly cares about Randle as a person. Is protective of him. Feels like its time for a little "tough love". Show Randle there is accountability for the unforced errors.

Its the job description for a player like Novak, not Obi.

So you’re saying you prefer a less dynamic player who can only do one thing like Novak?

In the offseason we need to focus on signing high percentage 3 point shooting wings like Watanabe or Burks to come off the bench
EwingsGlass wrote:Like Cam?
What is Cam from 3pt in his career? He had some flashes but lets just admit he wasn’t good at anything. Cam is a career 32% shooter. Way below league average.

No lol, Im saying that if the job description is for a one dimensional player, who spends most of the game in the corner, waiting to shoot the 3. Better to get a more reliable shooter.
Obi being dynamic really doesnt mean much to the team, if he isnt put in the best position to make use of it. Has more to offer than the role he has been given.

I would rather have a player (for this team) who does the one thing really well that we need, than a player who needs more minutes to figure out if there’s anything he does well, if that makes sense. We are beyond this point as a team and don’t have the capability to mold a project like Toppin at this point. It’s not much different than it was with Cam.

SwishFM said it best, that Thibs should try using Obi in the offense , the same way he uses Randle.
Give him more room to operate. I dont consider it a big shift in the game plan.

But Toppin hasn’t shown any ability to be used that way. He hasn’t developed any moves in the post or self creation off the dribble. He needs to show something before being used that way.

While I agree I wish Thibs would sit Randle for a minute of two to cool down the tough love benching approach with Randle wouldn’t work with Randle. I don’t know what happened with KAT but getting fired will leave some scars

Gustav refusing to hold Obi accountable.
Does everyone but Obi have the freedom to drive off catches?
Post up on mismatches? The freedom to drive and kick out or hit a cutter?
Create off the dribble?
Did Thibs tell Obi to just stand in the corner?
How did Grimes and IQ find ways of making a difference and getting minutes?
Probably Randle's fault for playing at an All Star level and taking his minutes.
Gustav, maybe Obi is just not that good? Hope he gets better but man let it go with blaming EVERYONE else for his failure to make an impact.

There's "tough love" and there's tough. As far as tough love. From what Ive read there was too much of the former in Minny, maybe a little too much of the latter in NY. Randle is our best all around scorer, and he's very inconsistent in the 4th. Something has to give.

You say that, but then Barrett is the reason we beat a team like Miami without Brunson. Just have to deal with the inconsistencies until he develops. He’s 22.

What’s the Mendoza line of age and number of years experience RJ has in terms of expectations of being an average performing offensive a defensive player?

There isn't.
I've seen guys break out in year 6 and 7.
Fact is, Barrett's numbers have improved from 10 feet in, pretty significantly in fact.
Overall there's actually been some progress on the offensive end. .25 to .30 % points in 3 pt shooting (and not being so cold and hot in that order) would do his profile and perception wonders.
Not smart enough to comment on his defense and I'll say he probably is the weak link in the starting (healthy) line-up.
Concerns are legit, and his path will be a slow one if he ever does breakout, but I'm not a fatalist I have no reason to assume he's a finished product.
