Knicks · Which league has worse officiating? NFL or NBA? (page 1)

Philc1 @ 2/12/2023 9:12 PM
Up until today I thought nba officiating was really bad and obviously corrupt as hell but this Super Bowl watching this supposed A-Team Referee crew obviously throw one call after another for Philly has changed my mind. NFL officials are only part time employees and even more succeptible to being bought
KnickDanger @ 2/12/2023 9:20 PM
The review thing is what gets me. Supposedly is only supposed to reverse call on field when it is clear. They take eternity to review and then overturn when it isn’t clear.

I have more invested in the NBA so to me they are worse. Especially whenI officiating a Knicks game.

I hate replay. It’s just an excuse to make the games longer and add even more tv commercial breaks

KnickDanger @ 2/12/2023 10:11 PM
Zebras decide a great championship game. Shameful.
Rookie @ 2/12/2023 10:13 PM
Wow refs just ruined what could have been a great ending to this game. Oh, and fuck philly
Marv @ 2/13/2023 8:27 AM

I thought it was a bad call. But then there is this:

Eagles' James Bradberry admits to committing late-debated penalty: 'It was a holding'

"It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide," he said after Super Bowl

NFL is worse than NBA.

Imo MLB baseball is the most pure because when a ball goes over the fence? You're not reversing the call and taking points off the board. And it's less than 1% rare when a foul ball gets ruled a "fair ball" and also the K-Zone on TV is so accurate to the point if an ump even blows 2 calls? He's going to hear about it from the players, manager and the announcers on TV etc.

Baseball is pretty difficult to fix. NBA frustrates me a lot BUT nothing is like the NFL I feel like it's WWF/WCW scrips these days.

KnickDanger @ 2/13/2023 10:24 AM
Worth mentioning is the amount of betting that goes on the Super Bowl, not to mention the NFL in general. Just sayin’.
ramtour420 @ 2/13/2023 10:43 AM
NFL ? What's that?

Players foul all the time in sports. If you’re in the last two minutes of a game— don’t call bumps or stuff that happens all the time— unless it’s flagrant — let the players decide outcomes

Knickoftime @ 2/13/2023 12:44 PM
Here's a radical idea:

I don't remember fans respecting the quality of professional sports officiating in my lifetime.

Don't every recall a season in a sport ever in which fans thought the officiating was good.

So maybe officiating live sports by the naked eye in real time is just really, really hard?

And as our TV's have become larger, in an expanded ratio, with revolutionary better resolution, and the number of camera angles and ability to manipulate the image has increased, maybe it just exasperates the dynamic that its just very difficult.

It make no sense the leagues would want bad officiating.

It makes no sense the quality of officiating would just decrease over time for no reason.

So maybe it's just us?

Maybe if officiating is terrible EVERY year for decades at at time, maybe terrible is as good as it gets?

Knickoftime @ 2/13/2023 12:47 PM
... and another thing.

Officiating isn't rigged.

The premise doesn't hold up under even light scrutiny.

And as fans, we should understand the first rule of fandom.

EVERY fan believe officials AND the media hate them.

That's our brains doing a trick on us.

We live in a world of duality. Nothing is black and white, good or bad unless you are either 7 years old or are from the "cancel generation" that swallows whole everything Rachel Maddow and the like put forward. Things in life are more nuanced than we are led to believe. One either needs to really take it upon themselves to figure it out or they run a risk of being ignorant or even worse, just being lead to believe what's convenient for the establishment ( corporate interests in our day and age)
So, are refs crooked ? Perhaps some are. More likely than not. There are books written by those said refs themselves on the topic. So the answer is yes. On the other hand, do refs make honest terrible mistakes? Of course, they are all human afterall... my 2 cents. Do those same principles apply NBA, NFL, NHL, even the Olympics? You tell me
KnickDanger @ 2/13/2023 1:14 PM
Of course it's all crooked and fixed. Otherwise Knicks would get the calls

Heh.

Citing a specific example more or less contradicts the point you were making.

But whatever...

Unless you don't think into what the example was meant to represent. I'll explain, a seven year old is not supposed to question the truth. When their parents tell them that Santa is real that's all there is to it. Same for the "cancel generation". No reason to use logic, just bend the knee. No reason to think, just repeat what you are told. Here is the enemy, this is who we hate, the details don't matter. You are either with us or you are the enemy..

I fully grasped your point.

Mine is there is PLENTY of that to go around on any side of the social, political, or age demographic you care to cite.

I'd in fact says older demographics, which I am on the cusp of, are in fact more prone to this.

I 1000+ agree with that. There is too much of that going around from both sides and all ages. Older people are less likely to question, of course. I just wish people would think more for themselves and look for more facts about a subject before forming an opinion.

SupremeCommander @ 2/13/2023 3:49 PM
it's the NBA, and it isn't even close. Has everyone forgot about Tim Donaghy? When he was trying to cover his own behind, he started working with federal prosecutors and alleged that those special calls the Michael Jordan used to get weren't our imagination... essentially, the rule book is enforced for everyone EXCEPT for MJ, LBJ, etc. We all know that's happened, and the guy the FBI raided says he got playoff games because he selectively enforced the rules

NFL refs aren't great, but in general, my beef is more with the actual rulebook than the refs. The defense has to selectively play flag football, God forbid they make contact with the quarterback who is trying to gain yards while going out of bounds....................

Then it's all good.

I'd only add we more or less just described human civilization in general.

Not the last 5 years of our's.

You might not agree with Rachel Maddow, but she's very thorough. She does her research. You might not agree with her conclusions. But it wont be from her lack of "nuance".

I cant watch her anymore because she takes too damned long to get to the point she's making. You often have to sit through most of the report to find out what the story is about. Worked great for James Burke, not so great for Maddow.
