We're the NBA's 6th highest Offensive Rating.
(Knicks Franchise History Top-3).
#1.) 2022-2023 = Offensive Rating of 116.7.
Vs.
#2.) 2012-2013 = Offensive Rating of 111.1
#2.) 1988-1989 = Offensive Rating of 111.1.
Yes.
Our Knicks of 2022-2023 now have the Highest Offensive Rating within NYK HISTORY (ever).
PS:
Nonetheless for everyone who's claimed Coach Thibs couldn't and wouldn't evolve on the Offensive side of the Court?
I'd like to have a 2022-2023 conversation with them (now that Thibs has his hands all over an elite PG for the 1st time since arriving in NY not even a full 3 years in).
We're no longer NBA's 6th.
Vs .
They've improved to 4th (and climbing).
117.1
Only behind Sacramento @ 118.8, Denver & Boston (118.0).
Pretty freaking awesome.
But what separates us from offense to defense is a Tom Thibs led D about to be full of dogs with Playoff intensity.

Wow. Well thought out and stated. Must read. This makes me believe I am wrong about the posts asking for offensive sets. They are clearly learning how to move without the ball and how to create without a set play. The off ball adjustments are there and weren’t really noticeable. This team will become a behemoth. They are building a core of players that know where to be on the court at all times.
TLDR, it clips off ball movement and makes the argument that the model of play compensates for the lack of called plays, allowing them to be offensively efficient out of the ISO set.

Knicks are not a great shooting team.
They are not a great 3pt shooting team (although their percentages are improved)
They're near league low in assists. Near league high in ISO. Both of these things are one of the reason they're also near league low in TOs.
Yet 4th ranked in offense.
Some people think coaching is just managing a rotation, but the videos above ARE coaching.
Golden State once broke the matrix on NBA offense.
Time to start asking if Thibs and his staff have broken the matrix again on NBA offense.
Maybe this style is like the Philadelphia Eagles 'push Jalen Hurts from behind for 2-3 yards on 3rd or 4th and 1'. Simple, yet unstoppable?

One of the things that the Knicks did emphasize several years ago was analytics (no way to compare across organizations but it sure does seem like the Knicks are tops around the league). I've read the team described as having invested in this type of technology across the board - from cameras in practice down to the raw number crunching and using that to inform style of play.
They have certainly maximized their particular talent pool and broke the matrix is a good way to put it. The whole Mitch (and team) rebounding thing is a prime example.
Points Per Possession. I can't really wrap my head around this one and don't know how/where to look this up.
It doesn't feel right but neither do this year's efficiency stats and they both point to the same things.
Anyway, fire Thibs cause he is only a defensive coach
Hate to be THAT guy (well, I don't really) but as fun as this is, take a look at this...
3P% since the All-Star game:
Brunson: .407
Randle: .478
Barrett: .407
Quickley: .457
Hart: .500
Grimes: .464
That's just NUTS...
I do feel like the Knicks have arrived at a different level for their offense.
Over the past 2+ years, it's been pretty much the same type sets that all NBA teams run and executing them over and over and over again while only nuanc'ing them some. Give or take, it didn't matter too much the team they were playing or particular match ups, they just kept running the same things.
With Brunson in place, over the course of the beginning months, it's much more organized and for the other guys around Randle/Brunson, it's much easier for them - they know their spots and know variations on the sets and most of the counter moves too depending on what the defense throws at them. In turn, it's easier on Randle/Brunson to operate in ISO advantages - because the guys know where to be and when to move. If you had to describe what was going on this year at a high level, it's Randle/Brunson sets with guys around them.
Recently, especially over the last month and in particular and very overtly against Boston, the Knicks ran playoff sets. And by this I mean that they are running their sets but hunting down a particular player or match up and doing it over and over and over. For me, this is very new for the Thibs crew (that arc being over the course of 3 years); it's a different level of offense determination/purpose and holy cow on that.
And I know it had some to do with Brunson being out against Boston and because it was such an exhausting 2OT game, but I think we all just saw Julius hand over responsibility of being the focal point person who takes advantages of a mismatch and it was really overt against Boston *and* it was at a critical juncture. There was at least 1 possession where Randle brought ball up court and knew IQ had Muscalla on him in transition. Randle directed traffic, gave ball to IQ, and promptly went to the corner 3 spot so that IQ would have half the court to operate by himself. That's new'ish for Randle and the team. They've done it before for sure but not in the super crunch possessions on the fly.
For me this is all incredible to watch unfold.
Martin it does feel incredible. I also think it’s a result of the roster quality being improved. The biggest improvements coming from within. We have guys that can SCORE. You would not bat an eye at IQ/RJ/Hart/grimes dropping 20+
We can and do win when Randle/Brunson have off shooting nights. It’s just so fun.
Like how phucking good can IQ be? Is he a star? Like what’s this kids ceiling
✅It’s all so enjoyable 😎
