I really only watch other teams when they play the Knicks.
Who are the top contenders for Coach of the Year?
Mike Brown, because I'm of the opinion that teams with MVP's don't require great coaching.
I think it’s Mike Browns to lose at this point but I think Daigneault (OKC) and Unseld Jr. (Was) should get some consideration
Hope Mike Brown gets it. While he has been paid handsomely he kind of got screwed in Clev and LA given the roster issues. Glad to see he stuck it out and got the gig in SAC, and happy to see him gain success. He has paid his dues many times.
Mazzula has done a very good job but it was a team already succeeding at a high level.
Fun facts, Pop, Riley and Don nelson are the only three time winners.
MDA won with both Suns and Rockets.
Thibs with Bulls and knicks.
Two time MVP’s are locks to make HOF. Is COY carry that kind of prestige?
There are some one offs like Dwayne Casey and then Steve Kerr. Kerr will Be a HOF inductee given his ring count as a coach.
MDA and Thibs to be also? No rings (yet!) but two timers with good winning % career. Crazy but Nate McMillon has about 50 more wins than MDA!
Have to have a gaudy win total to make HOF or a chip or two. COY might not cut it. Two might? Not all that have that are in.
I'd go with Mike Brown. Where did Sacramento come from? Thibs is #2 for me.

Chickn or the egg? What is the player never been an MVP prior?
If Randle if the MVP this year is Thibs disqualified by this?
Great teams need not be well coached if it has great players?
Teams with Great players don’t always win chips.
Great teams don’t win chips without great players.
Yes, even detroit had a great roster under Larry brown. No super stars, but very talented group.
I do admite, teams with MVPs don’t often have COTY. Depends on record?
Seems expecations play a major role. Seems silly, a great team that continues great play does not honor its coach.
MDA has 2 awards, same as Thibs. Phil Jax has 11 rings, one COY award.
Not saying phil deserves 5 or 6. Nellie has 3. Kobe and Jordan never won a chip wihout PHil. Great players and Great coaches matter.
Not saying others don’t deserve the award. Just seems like some things are taken for granted.
Mike Brown is doing a great job. If he wins he will have one more than Steve kerr.
Me, I think it should be a regular and playoffs season award.
MDA and Thibs have 2 each. Its based on regular season. Perhaps they over achieved which makes them deserving based on the criteria. But a coach who gets his team in a position to win, say regular season, then wins 16 more games to win a chip also is coaching his ass off. Now, not saying every team that wins a chip gives COTY. Each year is different.
If Thibs didn't just win it 2 years ago, I'd say he was a strong contender this year but i doubt he gets it again so soon after

If SAC falters down the stretch with the Knicks grabbing the 4th seed or higher, that's the only scenario I see Thibs getting it over Brown.
NBA gotta share and spread the COY love
It's gotta be coach Thibs especially if we finish with 50+ Wins + an NBA TOP-5 Record.
Milwaukee.
Boston.
Denver.
Philadelphia.
New York.
None of those HCs would be more deserving than Coach Thibs.
Im cool with Malone or Brown winning it.
Its a weird award as it does not often go to the best team with the best players, sort of a team that outperforms its expectations?
Vaughn was doing a hell of a job until Kyrie got weirder and moved.
Brown in SAC got that vibe going for the award.
Thibs should get some votes.
Thibs vs. Brown on Thursday, winner take all?
From articles:
The current NBA Coach of the Year voting system was introduced in 2003. A panel of 124 sportswriters from the USA and Canada voted on the candidates and gave them a vote each on first-place, second-place and third-place. The coach with the most overall points is declared the winner no matter the number of first-place votes. A first-place vote accounts for five points, a second-place vote is worth three points and a third-place vote is one point.
Coach Tom Thibodeau in 2021 won the NBA Coach of the Year award with a total of 351 points despite getting fewer first-place considerations. It is a system employed by the NBA 17 years ago and unfortunately, it got the better of coach Monty Williams. Coach Williams ended up with 45 first-place votes and a total of 340 points. The 11-point difference between the top two coaches is the closest margin of victory in the NBA Coach of the Year award since this system of voting was installed in 2003.
There is no mention I can find that defines the criteria for how writers vote. Thibs was no doubt deserving but so was Williams.
Kerr won his despite the fact he was out about half the year with his brain stem issues. The 37 wins were not credited to interim coach luke walton as interim coaches don't get credit. Kerr requested the league do so but was rebuffed if memory serves me. this was season GSW won 73 games. This was his only win as COTY. DId he deserve it? Subjective.
The whole thing is subjective from writers. Should be some convoluted formula for some consideration? Wins prior season with % of same players year to year?
Nick Nurse wins chip and COTY in his first year? perhaps deserving, but they got Kawhai mid season for a short rental. They gave up derozen and Valachunas but get back Kawhai and Marc Gasol, who was cooked by the next season.
Jazz won 52 games (short season), Suns win 51 games, Knicks win 41 finishing 4th.
so its all based on where the team was year before? That year it seems like it.
Monty wins it next year....
Kings won 30 games last year. They at 37 already.
I think Thibs getting Randle to Most improved was big for him two years ago.
If this is subjective and few get repeats, I'd say good guy who got screwed by lakers and Cav's Mike Brown is going to get it.
Nuggs Malone will get votes but his team was injured last year.
Again, mostly subjective and Im just guessing.
Randle will Get some MVP votes, as might Brunson will will look good for Thibs. I'd guess not over the top to get award. I hope im wrong.
