Knicks · [Game Thread 3/31/23] Knicks at Cavs 7:30PM (page 10)

Honestly Barrett has been doing this shit all season long.

I’m sure it’s frustrating for Toppin & Robinson. They have some many easy buckets lost because guys force shots.

RJ had two sequences when he forced a shot got blocked and got it back and took at terrible rushed three pointer that led to two transition baskets.

Toppin is to focused on fitting in. He needs to look at Hart out there who bullies his way to points.

Great team win, hopefully this forces Thibs to understand the iso takes away from strengths of grimes, iq, Hart times two and Obi. You can speed the game up and force the other team to play multiple paces.

And when RJ doesn’t have it, he needs to be benched. We’ve watched that stupid fucking drive into 3 people too long.

Ball movement. Without Julius ball moves. Obi helps with that greatly

Randle is too slow with the ball in every way. In transition he is slow and in ISO with decision making. Obi won't get you 57 because that is not his game. He is not going to dominate the ball. He will move the ball if he has nothing. The ball movement and player movement is why this team was so hard to guard. The Cavs had no idea who was going to get the ball.

With Randle it is easy to guard. Throw a double at him when he turns his back or when he dribbles then play the passing lanes. Randle will get his number from all the touches he will get but he is inefficient so you will win those battles more often than not unless he is just hot like in Miami.

With Obi you can't plan for him and the team because whoever is open gets the ball. Not only that you now have to account for Obi in transition. This opens up the offensive rebounding for the Hart brothers and Mitch. With Obi it is not about raw numbers because he will never dominate the ball to get consistent high points. He will also have low rebounds usually because he leaks out on transition. Listen to what D Mitch had to say about why they gave up so many rebounds. This is also why Obi who is always one of the nicest people gets pissed when people miss him on cuts and leak outs. Just like how I was pissed when we were not using IHarts passing before. This is their specialty. If you are not using it they are severely limited in their contributions.

WOW - Mitchell see’s it clear as day - somewhat damning for Julius who does this when he wants. When Jules is running/attacking he is a load.

Thibs obviously is frustrated with RJ and he obviously see’s what 95% of us see —- there were a few times (ex where RJ grabs the loose ball and steps on the baseline) where Thibs wanted to strangle him.

He see’s it but like Julius Thibs M.O. is to blindly support Jules/RJ with the hope they will perform for him….not every player receives this allowance from Thibs.

Thing is - I think Thibs is already done with RJ he just hasn’t told anyone yet.

You may be right. It may just be something they deal with in the offseason. Even if they keep him, I have to believe he'll come off the bench next year.

The thing is, even if he scores 20 pts, its not usually a good thing for the team, because if those same number of shots were given to other players, you probably net 4 more points.
Best thing he can do is rein himself in and take only whats given him, and otherwise PASS THE DAMN BALL.

Far from it for me to suggest otherwise but I’d bump that up to multiple seasons. He hasn’t figured it out and now it’s just more glaring. As a coach and organization, you do tolerate this to some degree over a players first few seasons. Knicks on playoff mode now.

GustavBahler @ 4/1/2023 1:08 PM
Great game, everyone chipped in. Game ball to "Brunson Burner" heard that on ESPN. And iHart. He seems to have a good grasp now on his teammates tendencies. Enough to make those great surgical passes. Should encourage more cutting to the rim as well.

Obi didnt do much as far as creating his own shot. But this was the best I watched him move without the ball in a long time. Beats camping in the corner.

Sorry LL, this was fan fiction on my part. I wish I knew what the argument was about though. I hope it was nothing that lingers.

LMAO - OBI not worried if RJ would take a swing at him. “I’m pretty sure he’d miss.” . That was classic.

RJ has to go. We don't need his offense. Quickley is a superior 3rd option, and Hart is a better wing option. See if we can move RJ and picks for OG to the Raptors. He would fit this team like a glove. A wing rotation of OG, Grimes, and Hart would be drive teams nuts. The Raptors seem like to smart of an organzation to take on RJ but maybe the Canada connection gets a deal done.

100% spot on and would be my first ideal move for Knicks. I’d overpay to a certain degree for OG via RJ.

Moonangie @ 4/1/2023 5:55 PM
RJ + picks for OG...where do I sign up?

Not sure my tv can take any more abusive language from me every time RJ commits another harebrained turnover or idiotic shot. Something is off in his head and it's unclear if he can resolve it in NY.

gradyandrew @ 4/1/2023 7:53 PM
RJ gave Clyde homemade cupcakes on his birthday and all was forgiven by me.

Pretty obvious that a lineup without Randle, who is more of a half court set player, is going to have more transition. Same would be true of any team with a similar half court star. Mavs would probably run more without Luka in the lineup. Which they did when JB was playing for them when he was hurt. Not much of a knock. Sure DM is not saying he would rather face the Knicks with Randle.
In terms of ball movement JB had 36 shots. IQ and RJ 33. Most not off ball movement. So...

Knowledgeable fans understand how a playoff series is different than a regular season game. Teams put together schemes to stop top players. Despite some celebrating the positives of a Randleless team, they should understand that teams are stronger with multiple seasoned stars to contend with. Without Randle, Cavs will look to stop JB and probably IQ. Will force the ball out of their hands and let others, who are not accustomed to carrying the load, to beat them. JB for 50 in multiple games will be a tough ask. But gotta say, if Randle is not able to go in the playoffs, like our chances. Especially if we play like we did yesterday..

Great win. Loved the cohivsiveness and the play from KB, JHart, IQ and IHart.

Is Thibs playing a rope a dope game? Seems like the past three victories have followed the same script of both teams running wild on offense for 3 quarters before he unleashes the Kraken defense in the 4th.

I have no explanation but curious if he has an issue. Its not a detriment to winning but its not a good look.

Quite frankly, I’m the same. Not sure if it’s confidence or what is going on with the decision making stuff.

RJ is a physically limited athlete - albeit a supremely strong one - but he should still be able to play basketball at a high enough level and yet he is fucking that up too. He hasn’t learned how to learn within his own physical gifts and he is compounding with the decision stuff.

It’s gotta be maddening for him and coaches. Obviously fans too.
