Luka has three more years until he can opt out of the last year of his super max which would be right at $49mil.
He can ask out of Dallas but he holds really no leverage for two more years as to where he can demand. That reality is Dallas gets a better price for him if his new team and him agree on an extension. If not, the risk depreciates what dallas can get in return.

the 4 year 55mil extension for Finney-Smith was viewed by many a near bargain for Dallas as he was also a great fit. They they choose to trade him as part of the Kyrie deal was later determined.
As a good defender he too is missed currently.
One caveat here and quite frankly I don't understand the facts and nuance of the DFS signing. There was an indication that the Finney-Smith extension messed with the Mavs cap situation that somehow made it a ton more difficult to sign Brunson during the season (if not impossible). I'm not sure of the logistics but that was the implication.
Finney-Smith was a really good contract though
I believe there was a partial truth. They did not want to be in a position where they could have lost both, DFS signed early was good for them but from that moment he and Brunson were locked into that 55mil type deal as a ceiling.
What Cuban alludes to is Brunson gave all indications he liked it in Dallas and perhaps was cool to sign in the off season. What Dallas messed up was not knowing that Rick would become a coach for knicks in late June or they would have traded him prior to the trade deadline. They made conf. Finals so it was smart to have not.
His price went up with magnificent playoff performances. Did Dallas anticipate that? Can’t blame them if they did not. It was a revelation!!!!
In the end was it a package deal? Dad comes aboard signes June 30th. Can’t find “tampering” between father and son, that is impossible to prove.
I think Cube is right about one thing, once the trade deadline passed and THEN Jalens price went up the only shot he had was getting to counter. They had his bird rights and perhaps figured a way to get under the cap afterwards. So in a way cube was right, he kind of expected to be given a chance but that final 5th year vs. being with Leon, Dad, and out of Texas is ok. He got a declining contract thus he got his big money up front. That has value. Also, he should be able to earn another decent contract.
Perhaps also not being under the shadow of Luka mattered too?

Wasn't Brunson's rookie extension amount capped at 4 years 56mm just like Robinson? Both Brunson and Robinson were drafted 33 and 36 respectively in the second round of the 2018 draft. Limited contract value until they became UFA.
That said, Dallas knows from the Deandre Jordan negotiation that any verbal agreement during the moratorium is non-binding and they could have come in higher. They didn't.
