Melo is going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. One of the most prolific scorers in NBA history! The jab step and jumper will be remembered forever.

I wish the Melo era would have gone a little differently and had more success here but that is a topic for another day. Melo did give us some great moments and memories. The 62 points in the Garden against the Bobcats will be tough to break for years to come. The 50 points against the cHeat on jumpers only and not a single point in the paint is remarkable! How about Easter Sunday clutch threes against the Bulls?

And Melo never ran away from the media. He ALWAYS took the criticism. He came here when almost nobody else wanted to come here. Melo wasn't perfect but he was one of the best players in Knicks history.

He would e been legendary if he showed more consistency in his hat game.

never loved the guy or really hated him either. He is a deservingly first round HOF
I never “blamed him” for our shortcomings as the team with him was thin around him. He did not have any “great knick moments” other than some cool individual ones. Playoff fizzle ten yeas ago was not on him as the team just aged out.
Shame his career here also fizzled out.
He wanted to be here. That mattered.

The longest running argument and I’ll say when you look at the cost of stars now, the Knicks really made out like thieves getting a top 10 player in his mid 20s via trade. Today it’s totally different. What happened after the Knicks got melo is a different story. I don’t blame him. It was a great run he had. I remember really looking forward to him coming out of high school. I remember him being compared to Antoine Walker, which wasn’t so much a bad thing back them. I thought his offensive game at Cuse was ahead of its time. Times like this make me feel old. He was part of my era. Only Lebron and CP3 left.

You're right, asset wise it would be a hell of a lot more for him now. Anyway, what we wanted was a Lebron level game changer. What we got was...well Melo. Great offensive player not surrounded with enough talent. Nothing against the guy at all but not putting his poster on my wall.

Made out like thieves as we got the best player but to point our best post Melo trade season was 54 wins. Nuggs won 57 that year. Nuggs never went anywere nor did we.
Trade was about even perhaps. Knicks got a star who faded in his second contract.

“Lebron level game changer” always consisted of Lebron and another “superstar”. Carmelo closest superstar, with the Knicks, was oft-injured Stoudamire.

I’ve wondered how things would have gone for the Knicks if they amnestied STAT instead of Billups.

Might want to review the timeline. Trade for Melo was in Amare's first year here. Billups was with us the end of that year. We'd have had 4 years still of amare's contract I believe. even spread over 7 years it was a big number.

Not disagreeing with your main points, but Lebron way > than Carmelo. Defense, assists, work ethic - for starters. Back to my point - we thought we were getting the next best thing. I sure did anyway. Not the way it went.

I wish him well

that said, he did have talent with him here. his failings were not for lack of talent around him. He just didn't complement it. And he never seemed to be the least interested in sacrificing any part of his game for the greater good. Other may disagree, but i continue to think he Was too busy with dancers, drinking wine and wanting to be a celebrity while in NY

and while some say he wanted to be here, as recently as 2 years ago (after his departure from the Knicks) he was saying he never wanted to be traded from Denver. Who knows, maybe he just had hurt feelings and wanted to give another dig at NYK. And if he did want to be here, we should acknowledge that we would have been better if he just waited until seasons end and joined as a FA (like Durant did with GSW). Instead we traded away a lot of depth and draft assets including the pick swap that netted J.Murray (currently killing it for Denver).

Super immensely talented; also super complicated. I hope he enjoys retirement

Right we gave him Bargnani, what else did he need ?

HofstraBBall @ 5/22/2023 7:17 PM
Congrats to Melo!
A shame he was not signed by someone after the year he had.
Would have given him a chance to do a retirement tour and for fans to show their appreciation.
Heck, Knicks could have used his 3pt shooting.

The media really over exaggerated the package we gave up. We offered Ainge a bigger and better package last summer for Mitchell and he turned it down. The real problem with getting Melo was Amare wasn’t the right superstar to team up with him. Both guys occupied the same floor space on offense and neither played defense plus Amare was at the end of his career anyway

2012 will always be a memorable year. Linsanity and then the following season 54 wins

Jamal Murray, taken with one of the picks given up in the trade, doing pretty well btw.

Bit presumptive with his personal life bleeding his career?
Fact is he needed to lose weight and recommit to work on his body. He declined fast without it. Lebron always put that work in. Melo Elongated his career after the big contract was up by putting it in.

Easy for fans to say “He could have done more”.

The whole “Waited to be a FA”? No, He could have opted out but he needed surgery and was walking into a work stoppage.
Surgery goes wrong he is at a great disadvantage financially. He was never going totally FA that time. He had it as leverage and Denver was not going to risk it. Nets were all in with big trade package if knicks did not.

Jamal Murray was a trade swap with our 7th pick.

This is a pretty dumb response. He had quality people here too. Maybe you can identify some players whose game he elevated or parts of his game he sacrificed

We paint him as someone who wanted to come here, but omit things like he wanted to leave for Chicago shortly after == and those are his words. He stayed here because Chicago would only go to like 17/year and we were offering a lot more. If he was such a NY guy why would he do the whole FA tour other than as a vanity play. Unfortunately for him the response he got was bit ego deflating

Your contrasting media coverage based on a trade done 12 years after (Mitchell).
Also, DM to cavs did not face the same media intensity because he was traded to Cleveland, not New York. You get that right?
Of course you do, so what we offered Ainge is irrelevant.

MaTT4281 @ 5/23/2023 1:28 PM

Much love to Melo. I get why he's a lightning rod for a lot - iso, plus lazy defense will do that (unless you win MIP ), but he gave us good years, handled the media like a professional, and carried us just as far into the post season as our current Knicks.

Do wish we had him on a minimum contract on the way out, but respect on a good career. HOF for sure.
