By comparison, RJ was resigned for 17.5% of cap and (give or take) that's his cap hit for 4 years until 2026-27.
It's not a straight exchange, but that extra ~7% is like not having a DDV sized contract on your cap.

The guys over at Knicks Film School cover this exact scenario and I got lost in the details. The short answer is Yes but I have no idea what the qualifiers for that are.

Wow, Ben Simmons is finally healed and ready to play. Hallelua people!! Just in time for his contract year. I would imagine that’s just his agent and Simmons is still the same mess he has been for the last 2 years. The real question is if you are Brooklyn do you play him or sit him? I would imagine he is going to get waived at some point but smart money is on after the trade deadline. If they sit him he’s going to be the story again. I guess in a tank year Brooklyn doesn’t really care much about distractions

The rookie will be better and plus he has OG, Bridges, Hart Deuce to watch as well. No need to hate on Bertans. He may not be your kind of player but if the team picks him up must be for a reason, perhaps as a specialist at ends of quarters and in last second shot situations. If he comes in and wins us a few games with a last second in bound three, you'll love him.
