Knicks · What are the thoughts on Donte DiVincenzo for the MLE? (page 3)

Gotcha. I'd guess I'd compare them by saying their both utility wings, with Josh being more physical and Donte being more athletic. I looked up their rebounds per 36 possessions and Hart was at 8 and Donte was at 7. Their career 3 point percentages are about the same, with Donte being slightly better. Donte has shown steadier improvement from 3 throughout his career it seems. But Hart has been a much better finisher at the rim, I'm guessing because of his aggresiveness in transition. I like Donte and wouldn't mind having him. But I'd prefer it if they nabbed a legit combo forward 3/4 or 4/5 who had a clue on defense.

Doing Obi dirty without even mentioning his name. Shame shame

Knicks wanted to make sure they had a bit more insulation from tampering charges and thus talk to Ian about other team interest in DDV

I mean, its clear he takes the starting role over Grimes, right?

I don’t think that’s clear personally but it’s sure a possibility.

You could argue and I haven’t checked the stats that Grimes is better shooter/defender but certainly it may not hurt to have a connector (like Hart) in the starting line-up who likes/prefers to pass. That could also potentially free Grimes up for a bigger scoring/touches role off the bench.

Above said I would think Grimes still starts and Donte absorbs bench minutes vacated by another trade.

I think DDV looks for to get paid and and an opportunity to start.
Thats as good as it can get.
That CCA or playing with his buds matter to some extent but reality is these guys have short windows and they are not doing big favors without just compensation.
DM and others look so its a future uncertain but thats true elsewhere as well.
GSW can’t really pay him so they are out. If he can score a 4 year deal for 10-12 mil thats pretty darn good money!

Brunson/McBride
Grimes/IQ
RJ/Hart

we basically have 6 guards we play at PG/SG/SF. McBride/Grimes/RJ/IQ are all 23 next year (IQ is 24).

I like Donte a ton and if we lost our depth in a trade for a main character DD would be one of the first guys I look to bring in to beef things up. As of now I dont see where he plays or who he plays over.

True. I'm assuming if DDV signs there will be more moves that would make the rotation more sense

Like Donte. Think he is in the Josh Hart mold.
Hi deflection rate, high 3par. Aggressive on both defense and offense
Think he can be a high energy player like Hart but with a much better 3pt shot.
He is not afraid to shoot the ball up. Would add him if we get of borderline bench guys like Deuce.
Think he will be a break out player given the opportunity.

This is my thought. I don't think Grimes is where he is right now and the relationship of the squad is important. And you add another hard working 3&D wing for nothing. Its the right move. Sort out the guard situation later. McBride is odd man out, for now.

Brunson/IQ
Divicenzo/Grimes
Barrett/Hart
Randle/Toppin
Robinson/Hart

In this rotation, Barrett either takes the next step or gets replaced. And you have some ability to upgrade at most positions while maintaining both Sub-Apron flexibility and upside potential.

Meaning, I wouldn't condition signing Divicenzo on moving guards. I would add him immediately if he is willing and keep building Brunson's team. Its a no-brainer for me. Like we are totally overthinking this. Deal with the depth issues after.

DiVincenzo is a good fit. He has built in chemistry and is a hard nosed guy on both sides of the ball who can shoot a corner 3. I don't think you start him over Grimes - Grimes still has a lot of upside.

I don't think Donte's upside is enough to push Grimes or IQ. I'm not sure bringing Divicenzo makes sense barring a trade. A full MLE is nothing to sneeze at, if that is Donte's market, as the team tries to create distance from the tax apron.
Nalod @ 6/29/2023 10:46 AM
YOu start him if he contributes to winning, its up to Grimes to beat him out.
If Grimes is a better player/Fit, you start him.
We are not a rebuilding team.
If FO if content with Grimes and roster as is, then we don't bring on DDV.

You also have to factor in salary. Why bring in Donte if you're already resigning Hart and Grimes is there at less than half the cost? Donte had his best season this year and it still wasn't much better than second year Grimes. The restrictions on teams over the tax apron is real. It really isn't about if Donte is a good player, it's if he's good enough to risk flexibility for trades etc. As of now, I'd say no, he's too redundant for what's already on the roster.

I know you know it's out there, but I am assuming everyone else is assuming there is another consolidation move that makes DDV palpable to the Knicks FO and the roster just won't stay the same.

That's what I would think, but I take nothing for granted except death and 30 point games from Jalen Brunson.

Been out there a long time: Very possible either IQ or Grimes get traded either as part of bigger deal or for future picks. We need to consolidate at some point or let assets walk, which can and will happen also.
Happens to other teams. Good ones too. Can't pay everyone and not everyone is traded.
We got our two best players via free agency.

Would this work or implode?

Brunson / McBride
DDV / Grimes
Anunoby/ Hart
Randle/
KAT / Hart
