Knicks · ESPN Going All In To Make Their NBA Broadcast Even Worse (page 5)

Nalod @ 8/1/2023 12:53 PM
Marv was rehired in 1998 after he bit a women during sex.
He was fired in 2004.
Who was the president of basketball operations then. Isiah.
Basically he was critical but Marv made big money with national contracts and was miserable.
In part, it came out in broadcasts.
Marv was the voice of the knicks for me. Hated he was fired and hated Isiah for all he did.

As for others, announcers do change. I don't find Reggie or Richard Jeff as obnoxious as previously. They learned to homogenize their gig and call it better.
Reggie the player was a knick killer.

I think when we hear Knick hate on a national televised game were the knicks are getting blown out, have a losing record, and are a mess, we hate the messenger.

ok so, Marv resigned in 1997 after pleading guilty to the sexual assault. Then he was rehired in 1998 and fired in 2004 for being critical of the team. Good catch. also did you know Marv Albert's real name is Marvin Philip Aufrichtig?

I stand partially... un-corrected. I thought thats what happened. Another reason why the Isiah years as Knicks president was such a low for me as a fan, among many others.

His track record, post playing career, had been so abysmal Im surprised anyone still listens to him on anything other than playing the game. Just the Xs and Os.

Read that he was accused of being responsible for getting a coach fired recently. Forget which one, thats what the coach suggested.

ESPN is closing in on promoting Doris Burke to the NBA Finals, hiring Doc Rivers to join her and jettisoning Mark Jackson to the “B” team or off the network, The Post has learned. In the wake of Jeff Van Gundy’s firing in late June, ESPN set their eyes on making Burke the first woman TV analyst on the NBA Finals and hiring Rivers to join Hall of Fame play-by-player, Mike Breen. – via Andrew Marchand @ New York Post

Sources said Jackson could stay on and join play-by-player Mark Jones on the network’s second team. If he balks at that option, he could be headed out of ESPN. – via Andrew Marchand @ New York Post

Van Gundy was a victim of ESPN’s talent layoffs. While Van Gundy was one of the best game analysts in sports, top ESPN executives were wary of his desire to coach again. Van Gundy was also critical of the NBA and its officiating, which the NBA has expressed disappointment at over the years and even this season, according to sources. However, there is no evidence of an edict from the NBA to make a change. – via Andrew Marchand @ New York Post

Oh my God Doris Burke is the worst. Definitely watching on mute.

Imagine the visionary views of Philc are published and the audio tape readings are done by Doris Burke.
My nightmare of hell!!

Is it Burke's delivery? Not for lack of knowledge of the game.

Mike Breen is really the only one left. Marv Albert, Reggie Miller, Richard Jefferson, Reddick are all haters but Doris is just annoying. I find myself yelling shut up Doris at the screen a lot but I guess that’s just my problem. Beth Mowins is the absolute worst though which means she’ll probably get promoted

I very much disagree with Marv Albert being classified as a "hater". He has been a fan since traveling with the Knicks as a ball boy, when Albert was a kid.

Marv got canned because he told the truth about the state of the team at the time. I would have been disappointed if Marv was just a cheerleader. Should have his name up in the rafters at MSG for his contribution to the franchise over many decades.

Didn't Marv Albert get fired after being accused of sexual assault? I think he eventually pleaded guilty. I just assumed he carried a grudge since he always sounds like he's rooting for whoever we are playing

That was not at work, not that it makes it acceptable. As I recall Marv was fired by Dolan because he wouldnt sugarcoat the hot mess the Knicks had become under Isiah. Isiah cost the Knicks millions for his behavior towards women. Dolan didnt seem to care.

I just looked it up. He was fired by NBC and resigned from MSG after the allegations. He eventually pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman while wearing ladies panties. It wasn't a good look for him. He was a great broadcaster back in the day

I stand corrected. My guess Marv would have gotten through this scandal if 1. he hadnt been so critical of how the team was being run at the time. 2. Wasnt wearing women's clothing. Mostly 1.

Dolan brought Isiah back to head the Liberty of all teams. Albert contributed far more to MSG; the Knicks, over a span of decades. I hope they honor him at MSG while he's still alive.

If Dolan was reportedly willing at one time to put aside his differences with Oak, settled his beef with Sprewell, he can do the same with Albert.

IIRC there were also some pretty disturbing allegations that he bit the woman way beyond her consent serious broken skin and other injuries all over her body.

"F*** Isiah!"
"Remember Marv Albert's panties?"

This thread reads like a Breen/Jax/JVG broadcast.

Doris Burkes is just the worst. Has she ever said anything that made anyone laugh? Doc Rivers has the scratchiest voice I ever heard and now we get to hear him as well? Calling games is all about chemistry and Doc has worn out his players at almost every stop in the league. Good grief Charlie Brown!

As a Knicks fan you could always tell there was a good amount of bonhomie between Breen van Gundy and Jackson because of their mutual love of New York- now I'm going to be grating my teeth as Doris talks about how special Tatum Mitchell and Butler are for three hours straight. I wish Breen would just quit in protest and call 82 games with Clyde and Wally.

Hoping Rivers voice is healed a bit since he not yelling from the sidelines.
Not sure there was much love from JVG and Jax in the broadcast booth. Seems in the era they did not call many games with knicks as they were not relevant much.
There is hate, then there was truth. The record speaks for itself.
Doris to make us laugh? Maybe she is working on it??

The sports network, once a financial engine for Disney, is suffering a decline in revenue owing to the slow death of traditional cable TV. Though ESPN is still profitable, Disney is looking to sell off a stake and transform the business into a digital streaming company, though near-term plans for that are unclear.

ESPN got bundled so it grew like crazy when Cable dominated. With the cord cut its a whole new world and revenue. With a stand alone stream its possible they can consolidate the sports world but no more will every household with any kind of bundle just have ESPN on it.
I dig the League Pass. I don't watch as much football anymore. In fact watch less of everything. With streaming, there is little "Channel surfing" and I don't find myself on sport center anymore. It was great in the day.

ESPN serves up some word salad in an effort to prove once again that they are just a bunch of stuffed suits who don't have a clue what they are doing

Why the decision to have Jeff Van Gundy depart? Burke Magnus: Well, it certainly wasn’t one thing. Let me say, that I think for 17 or 18 years we had what was, in my opinion, one of the best booths in all of sports. Some of this related to planning for the future and certainly some of it was also to try and realize some savings in our talent-related exercise. We felt like we could assemble not just a team on the “A” game but we believe we’ve assembled from top to bottom a different NBA team that clarifies a bunch of things, that adds a great talent in Bob Myers, who I think is going to be remarkable on television with a very unique perspective. These things are never easy. It felt like we could accomplish both of the two goals I referenced by making these changes. Mike Breen is the constant on the “A” team and hands down, in my opinion, the best play-by-play guy in any sport. It was really not focused just on those two guys (Van Gundy and Mark Jackson) but trying to reinvent in many ways the totality of our NBA coverage plan. And Malika Andrews is also taking fully the reins of our NBA studio (show). – via Richard Deitsch @ The Athletic

ESPN sucks. I remember when ESPN and CBS had the greatest college basketball coverage and analysis you could ask for in any sport. now it doesn't seem like the guys making decisions at ESPN like sports that much

ESPN going with an all female broadcast for Saturdays Heat game featuring Doris Burke and Beth Mowins. Wednesdays broadcast with Doc and Doris was pretty boring.

TNT last night with Stan VanGundy was light years better than any line up ESPN put together so far.
