Knicks · What do you think the Knicks plan is for Donovan Mitchell? (page 2)

I agree...the Spida ship has sailed. We have JB and that pairing would hold us back. OG would be a MUCH better fit. 3&D studs are what we need this season. Then Embiid once he requests a trade.

Knixkik @ 7/25/2023 10:23 AM
I still think the Knicks make a run at him and he continues to be the star with the highest likelihood of landing on the Knicks via trade. I think the front office is concerned about price, not fit. They are comfortable waiting it out.

Don't go after him even though he keeps sending love letters monthly?

Trade Randle?

The fit with Brunson is the big problem. Knicks defensive rating fell off a cliff last season. RJ has consistently rated as a poor defender despite seemingly passing the eye test, so maybe replacing his minutes with DM and sliding Grimes down to the 3 works, but it's an open question. Knicks are kind of in the "if ain't broke, why fix it category" There was something special about that Nova squad and DDV was the x factor that made it work. If Knicks regress this season a big trade should be considered but until then I want to ride this feeling out.

Some of you'all need to get updated prescriptions

Yeah, I think the best you can say is that RJs defense has been erratic following an encouraging second season. Still misses rotations, still gets exposed in certain speed matchups etc. Also, as much as I loved Grimes, I'm not thrilled with the prospect of moving up in the lineup fulltime and making him a three. The lineup is already kinda small and it would exasperate the situation.

There was a short period in the season where the D was dialed in and everyone was 'on a string'. While RJ has poor lateral movement and is slow to react, it's Randle that screws up the rotations. The frustrating part is that Randle has shown that he can be an exceptional defender when he wants to so it's an effort or conditioning/minutes thing.

DLeethal @ 7/25/2023 11:06 AM
I think 3 offensive guys and 2 defensive guys in the lineup works ala Denver. And then off the bench you bring guys like Hart and DD. You could form a good defense around that, but you need a really good 3&D player in the starting lineup.
martin @ 7/25/2023 1:18 PM
Man, I hate StephenA but it's almost like a DM-Brunson backcourt

GustavBahler @ 7/25/2023 1:31 PM
I hope the plan is to stay far away unless DM's deal expires and he gives us a big hometown discount to play here. We arent going to build a contender with mostly regular season stars.
VDesai @ 7/25/2023 2:10 PM
Mitchell + Garland in Cleveland's backcourt and they still had the highest defensive rating in the league. You need length and athleticism at the 3,4,5 to compensate. Mitchell is a good team player and I think he has a good attitude. It wouldnt be a disaster, but I think you'd need to shuffle some bodies to make it work. I'm not sure Barret+Randle at your 3,4 are the right players to match with it.

Agreed. DM has a crazy wingspan and has competent size for the 2 position. It's really not that "undersized" and Cleveland proved it can work at an elite level defensively. IMO, Randle and Mitch is a good powerful frontcourt to counter the smaller backcourt. You just need the right 3 man.

agreed.

and if DAL had guys like Mitch, Grimes, IQ around Luka/Kyrie they'd be damn good too. And dare I say a coach like Thibs.

DM is short but he's built like a tank with the wingspan of a SF/PF and that matters more than just height.

Yeah, that was the regular season. But we saw how easy Thibs was able to exploit that backcourt in the playoffs. He hunted Garland and Spida into submission with PnR.

Thibs would be the key

franco12 @ 7/25/2023 5:43 PM
If you can get Mitchell at a good value, you do it. He reminds me of Michael Jordan and Kobe with his moves in traffic.

Weirdly, he came up really small in the series against us. Was his head not in the game? Was it Thibs? Is he just an flashy but mentally weak player?

If we're giving up assets, I'd rather try to pry Bridges out of Brooklyn.

Not worry about DM fit with JB if Brunson is core piece traded to Cavs.
Its cold, but its an upgrade.
I love JB but…….

Not advocating for it - but if we did somehow trade JB for DM we could pair IQ and DM in the backcourt.

Won't happen but it would be a better fit IMO.

ramtour420 @ 7/26/2023 6:04 AM
Let me get this straight. Cavs had the highest defensive rating but shat the bed against us, and we aren't world beaters yet. Yet trading Brunson for DM is somehow a good move... What was it that Martin said about those prescriptions? Yeah
martin @ 7/26/2023 7:04 AM
Jalen is not going anywhere
Nalod @ 7/26/2023 9:04 AM
Of course he is not going any where but its an upgrade. You tighten up Grimes just a bit and pair with DM and you don’t have size issues.

Be real, DM>JB. Im thrilled with JB, but reality is they won’t put Him with Garland so its moot.
But, if they move Garland and want to move DM well then, the clock is ticking.

Get over yourselves, We traded Clyde to Cleveland. Shit happens.
No worries, im not on Leons speed dial!
