Knicks · Raptors trying to steal from the Knicks, federal lawsuit filed (page 2)

This is beyond tampering... If League does not act it will be telling teams it is up to them to protect themselves. It is in the NBA's best interest to take some kind of action, especially if the civil suit finds the Raptors liable.

Huh?

Why isn’t this being handled within the league with the commissioner being the final arbiter
?

Oh, that's an easy one. I will start by saying I am not really up on all the details, so this is my guess.

When you want resolution and restoration, you try to create as much leverage as possible to get the outcome you desire. Kept in-house, they probably wouldn't cause it would be entirely in the hands of the NBA and they would be hamstrung.

The Knicks did probably reach out to NBA and Toronto. They (NBA, Raptors) had a split second to make a big ass decision and they probably didn't respond in the way the Knicks wanted, and that's OK.

Next step: Make it more visible to gain leverage in the matter. Prob cost in the magnitude of $10K to put that lawsuit together but now they have the eyes of the NBA world on it to get a resolution.

From a purely business standpoint, Knicks and Dolan are probably thinking about how the can get the most out of this, as they should, they are the injured party.

If you and your family were victims in a drunk driving car accident where there was bodily injury involved, do you think about handling it just between you and the other party or do you think, I am going to sue that mutherfucker and get the lawyers involved? Not the best analogy but perhaps it resonates.

I also want the rights to Canadian natives Wolverine and Shay Mitchell. I know, I know... Wolverine is unrealistic. But Shay is nonnegotiable.

This is some criminal shit. Larceny, Corp espionage, etc. League will get involved but why wait, mitigate the damage.
This is not "Cheating" like stealing signs or deflate a football. This has a real monetary value on it outside of "cheating".
I doubt Ujiri had any knowledge of it but if he did he is also gonna be punished.
Teams allow guys to break contracts if they are promoted. league promotes advancement.
You don't take another work. Its stealing.

Knicks have every right to nail this guy and put a stop to them using the PROPRIETARY info this fool walked out the door with.
That he moved it before he even resigned is more egregious!

And let me guess, the reason no one has ever seen them is because they all live in Canada.

Everyone takes something from their old jobs but it looks like this guy went WAY too far. Three thousand video files!? Come on man. This guy was an idiot. He should have just taken 4-6 files as samples and Knicks probably would have just let it go.

I never took anything from a former job. I guess I should start bringing home toilet paper and paper towels

Agree, letting the Craptors slide would send the wrong message. We got screwed by Dallas and they received a slap on the wrist. If Silver doesnt come down hard on Toronto this time, Dolan is going to raise holy hell I imagine. Hope so.

Some exerpts from a recent Athletic article..

Why did the Knicks sue instead of rectifying this another way or through the NBA itself?

We still don’t know. It’s not like this is a legal matter that has been brewing.

In the suit, the Knicks say they first became aware of these allegations on Aug. 15, a day after Azotam officially departed the organization. The Raptors say the Knicks reached out to them two days later. On the following Monday, Aug. 21, the Knicks filed a lawsuit that came together over the preceding weekend.

People in the league office were surprised when the suit dropped Monday, said league sources, who were granted anonymity so they could speak freely.

Normally, the NBA handles issues like this. If someone allegedly breaks a rule, the league investigates and, if necessary, disciplines the involved parties. The Knicks opting to go to court is what separates this from your regular old tampering investigation, in addition to the nature of the allegations.

The Athletic has asked the NBA for comment several times since Monday, but the league has yet to provide one. How the league decides to handle one of its teams suing another remains in question, too.

Why are 10 John Does named as defendants?

The lawsuit alleges there are 10 Raptors employees “who improperly obtained Knicks proprietary information.” But their identities remain unknown.

The Knicks are banking that they can find out more information about those people’s identities later in the process.

“The reason why it’s permitted is that from their perspective, they would say, we don’t need to know their names and addresses at this point to assert our claims in court,” the anonymous lawyer said. “The context here is that they are trying to allege that it was not just one rogue employee.”

I thought these guys had some good back and forth on the subject. Start at least 4min in.

This motion seems like a "publicity stunt" meant to minimize the lengths the Raptors went to in their efforts to obtain proprietary data through stealth and deception. Seriously, I don't care how petty this is. Phuck the Raptors!
